Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Why are underwater diagrams 100% useless?

If you are looking for some thing new and exciting look no farther it's called wooly nymphing !! Take a large woolybugger of your choise and suspend it below a strike indicater and dead drift you will be surprised!! I know I was!! Have fun hope to see it in a book sometime!!:)

Can't lay claim to this new type of fishing as I spied on an asian dude catching fish after fish with this method so me being me I tried it and it worked like a charm !!:)

For those of you who love your indicators and think Euro nymphing is just a fad great. I love catching all the fish you never knew took your fly. For those of you taking shots at Aaron, I can't even understand where your coming from. In such a secretive sport Aaron is willing to share information on how to catch more fish. I personally have learned a ton from Aaron and have never met anyone more willing to help someone and I'm not talking about during a class. I've fished with Aaron and he takes time out to show you things when he doesn't have to and when I fish with someone who I know is better than I am I shut up and listen. Thats my testament to Aaron's character and I back him 100%.

As for all the fancy diagrams when you Euro nymph you are in direct contact with your flies, when you indicator nymph of tight line with shot your not. PERIOD. Direct contact means you will see/feel your takes quicker. Go ahead try and argue that one! Even if your indicator registers your take quickly wouldn't you want it to be as quick as possible? Maybe its just me.

Read your words carefully what you state is false. Euro nymping is exactly the same as fishing a tight line rig. The only difference is that you are using weighted fly's to get your leader down. I fish a tight line method and use split shot as my second or third weighted fly and adjust my weight according to the type of water I am fishing. When my weight is just ticking along the bottom it is perfect and you are in contact with the fly at all times. If you are Euro nymphing and you are not touching the bottom or ticking you are not in the strike zone. Any basic diagram will show you this! And most Diagrams I have seen are to give you a basic idea of how to use a particular rig. It is up to you to figure out what works best in any given situation..:)

Learning something new about flies, bugs, streams, gear, rigs, and techniques is why I come visit this FF board as well as other boards as well as contributing by posting at times when I have some knowledge of the subject.

BTW, in my experience, Czech (Euro) nymphing works best under certain situations, while indicators shine in others. I was skeptical about all types of Euro nymphing until I tried it. Now it’s part of my arsenal of FF techniques and rigs, and is my go-to technique under certain conditions.

For me, I like to read about new stuff, especially when an accomplished fisherman writes it. If it looks like it has some merit, I try it. Learning and trying new stuff is fun and broadens my horizons in fly-fishing. If you don’t agree or feel something is BS, don’t try it. And if it really bothers you, don’t even read about it. That’s the great thing about reading stuff on the Internet; you control the mouse.

This Euro nymphing is starting to sound more like a religious movement. As I stated before
it's just another way of nymphing. For some conditions it probably works better than other
methods.

I nymph alot, most of the time with an indicator, sometimes without. I tie alot of nymphs too, try to get creative. I realize that its the most effective way to fish most of the time, since trout get 90-95% of their diet subsurface. Having said that, nymphing sucks the big hog. Its the most boring and tedious way to fish with a fly rod. I used to drift worms like this when I was younger, same principles, different equipment. Every other way is more exciting than nymphing. Stripping streamers, swinging wets, and of course dry-fly fishing, when its on, is as good as it gets.

If you think you are detecting all the strikes using indicators, that's great. Stick with it, bud. More fish for me.

Nothing wrong with people being set in their ways. Nothing wrong with not wanting to catch more fish while you're out fishing either.

I just know, for me, catching more fish is what drives me not only to go out and fish, but to go out and learn new and better ways to catch them.

I grew up fishing with indicators, high sticking, and dry dropper rigs. I just started euro nymphing less than a year ago. If I were to fish against myself now vs. a year ago, I'd blow my indicator fishing ass out of the water. My catch rate has gone up SIGNIFICANTLY. I'm not just catching a few more trout, I'm catching an ass load more. Indicators still have their place, as a matter of fact, I dry smashed some trout shit box with them this weekend. It's just nice to have another technique that I can rely on to put me on trout. There's a lot of water types that I wont even think about using an indicator in anymore.

I think it's great that Aaron, and people like Aaron are out there teaching fly fisherman these new and exciting techniques. Talk to any body that has taken his class. Everyone sings the same tune, I'll promise you that.

I have a couple of questions to axe you......

1. Who's Bud?
2. When you fish against yourself, can we watch? It would be really cool to see you blow your indicator fishing ass out of the water. Maybe a UTube viral video there, don't you think?
3. What is an "ass load" of fish? Doesn't that hurt?
4. What is "dry smashed some trout shit box"? Is that like getting it on with an unlubed trout? Ouch!
5. What makes you think I sing the same tune as you or anyone else for that matter? I just whistle while I work (and fish).

Thank you for your consideration in these matters. Inquiring minds want to know.

Mel
