Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

The Outdoor Life Network is hosting an open “Casting Call”
for its innovative new tournament: OLN’s Fly Fishing Masters.

Open to both amateurs and professionals, the series will
showcase the sport of fly-fishing and feature some of the best
fly anglers in America. Teams will consist of two anglers casting
and fishing together in the hopes of winning big – the $52,000
purse is the largest prize ever offered for a fly-fishing
competition in the U.S.

Click here for an application: www.OLNTV.com

Four regional competitions will be held in the Summer of 2003.
Each competition (to be held in the West, Northeast, Rocky
Mountains & Southeast) will consist of a casting challenge
and a fishing competition.

The winning team from each region will compete in
OLN’s Fly Fishing Masters finals. Both the regional and
final round competitions will air on OLN!

For rules and more information visit www.OLNTV.com

Be sure to sign-up by the June 15 deadline!

I'd join, but then none of you's would have a chance to win the 52K... Since I'm a nice fellow, perhaps I'll stay out of this one :D

Anyone want to form a team? Or perhaps we should nominate a team.... Other than myself (I'm so humble:D), I'd think a good pairing would be:

Joe T. and Jason M.
or maybe
Dennis F and Dennis C (Team Webmaster)
or maybe
Sqerl and Sqerl (Team Nuts) :)

Some interesting notes:

Northeastern Qualifier - Pennsylvania
Registration: July 18th
Casting: State College, Pennsylvania - July 19th & 20th
Travel/Stream tour for Anglers late afternoon - July 21st
Fishing: Spruce Creek, Pennsylvania - July 22nd & 23rd

- It is suggested that each team have a competent fly tier.

MY personal opinion is; its not about who's the best its about just having fun!

I personallty think this form of competition is a joke. Its all about advertising products and "show boating" individuals to build there own businesses.

Before you know it flyfishing for trout will be like Bassmasters.

I have seen this competition thing fisrt hand while staying in lake placid.

The camera crews were not allowed in the river until competition time. The reason for this is they where stocking the living hell out of trhe pools to be fished.

Thee person who won the casting competition was able to pick,oh yeah the best stocked pool!

What a joke.

Anyoo flyfishing for me is a way to relax, have fun and has even become a from of meditation for me.

Just my 3 cents.

Yup... I've seen enough of the ESPN fly fishing competition stuff. I too think it's silly. Funny... if I entered and their were no risers I might be filmed sleeping "the competition" away on the bank. Now wouldn't that be hilarious.

They also probably wouldn't want me to sport the blue underwear shirt I've been know to fish in when it gets hot. And it sooo clashes with my olive green vest. They'd probably give me some sponsors waders to wear which I wouldn't of course. What would happen when I walk to the woods to take a pee! I probably wouldn't cooperate and wade in nice water so the camera could follow me. I also swear like a drunken salior some times when a miss a good fish I've been fishing too. I'll bet they'd like that on film.

I could go on and on but... I fish the way I fish cause I enjoy it and I don't think the producers would find me an attractive candidate.

Ok:

Let's see if I got this right. Competition will be for casting. Must be a 9 ft 5 weight rod. Oh by the way the rod can not be custom or hand made. Rod must be a off the shelf rod from any Manufacture. Line to be used will be a Cortland 555 WF5F. If you win the casting you get to be in the fishing portion as Joe T. said heavy stocked pools or as I put it, shooting fish in a Barrel. Now let's see, casting winner gets to pick spot (POOL STOCKED WITH MOST FISH AND BIG ONES TO BOOT). Can use any rod length, Lead free shot for weight only and all fly's must be barbless(First good rule I herd so far). Each partner has to catch two fish that they call keepers to win and play a game of tag I'm off stream partner your now fishing for your two. Now to complicait things a bit Sqerl states that a very competent fly tyer is a must for the team. OK, hears where I jump on the Band wagon. I will be the teams tyer for the team that makes it hear from this board. I only want $12,000 if the team wins the pot. I feel for my time and having to be up all day and night tying all flies needed and moving my entire shop out to the stream, food, hotel, gas and last but not least my pretty face will definitely cost $12,000. All I say is get real. Fishing is fun and relaxing. If I want all this struggle and tension and aggravation, I will join the Bass Masters.
Just think guys, look at the skill here involved going after pools stocked with tons of trout. Also keep in mind that the public will see this show and think what a great place to fish and bombard the area and possibly ruin a nice stream to fish for a year or two after the comp is over. Flyin I got your E-mail and will be filling your request with a pattern and flies on 5/22/03. Well see you in the winners circle or podium or what ever you call it on TV. I think I will just tye my flies and go fishing and forget about all this hype and nonsence.

I know the qualifying streams quite well. In fact the section of Spruce Creek that is to be used for the competition has already been posted. Like JoeT said it is nothing but advertising. Here is the situation with Spruce Creek. Their is an outfitter/guide by the name of Donny Beaver that used to be in a partnership with Orvis and had a few lodges in the area with plenty of stocked private water. Recently he had the privelage to lease land on both sides of the Little Juniata from an owner by the name of Espy. He automatically claimed that he owned the streambed. His shop's have received so much bad publicity from this and a pursuing court case with the state. I believe Orvis pulled out of his partnership at one of the shops. 90% of Spruce creek is posted by private owners and clubs. Beaver had a hatchery at the Orvis store right next to Spruce Creek. The only stretch open to the public is less than a quarter of a mile and it is the George Harvey Penn State section. Pick your fish, put it in the river and try to catch it. Not to sporting to me and at the cost of $600 per day. Jimmy Carter used to fish it. Beaver has lost so much money in the lawsuits that he has to get it back another way. This competition is part of it. I also heard that he opened a pay to hunt farm also.

Seems a bit too full of hoopla and bs to be any good for the sport.....but hey look at Bassmaster and the Flw....just my 1/2 cents.

Jason... Thanks for the history on Spruce Creek. I always wondered what the heck was going on there. Now that I know I wonder why anyone really cares? Sounds like a boring place to fish... pick your fish and all that. There is so much good water out there why worry unless it was a trend on other rivers too! Maybe Spruce Creek used to be a fun place to fish?

I meant to say it would be hard to find a fish in the public section. The stream is smaller than the gorge.
