what reel for TFO???

sushi

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
hello im thinking on purchasing a TFO 8 1/2 5 wt. medium - medium fast action .. now im in search for a good reel that will be a good match for this ... any suggestions???? thank you.

Do you want a large arbor reel? What is your price range? There's a thousand choices.
Just go to a fly shop and try some out. Make sure the reel foot fits the reel seat properly. You'll find your way. It's not a complicated decision.

I'd go to the Cabelas website. You can find a reel with a good waranty and a decent disc drag for as little as 50.00 and spare spools for about 19.00 each. If you really search you can do better! I have a St. Croix reel with disc drag that came with a set (saw it on line for about 40.00). I hooked 2 carp on a 6 wt that took me almost into the backing using a 5 x tipet while fishing for trout. As with the rods....... the higher price generally goes to asthetics. Most of the technology that was previousyl top dollar has trickled down. As you'll see wtih Temple Fork, the performance and warrantiees are comparable with 400.00 rods, but the asthetics are not! Check out their bargain cave.

what do you guys think about ross reels??? cimarron 2 or the ross cimarron large arbor reel??? anybody tried this reel before??? is this a good combination for the TFO 5 wt. 8.6 ??? ...

The only physically determining factor when fitting a reel to a particular rod would the the weight of the reel. It should balance the rod in your hand. Other than that, it's merely a preference for aesthetics and/or the type of drag. Cost may also be a factor in your decision.

Try fitting different reels at a fly shop that sells that rod. You'll get the best advice from them.

A big deciding factor when purchasing a reel is do you want one machined out of bar stock or one that is cast out of a mold. The reels that are machined take longer to make and are of higher quality and durability than the cast ones but cost almost twice as much. Another deciding factor when purchasing a reel is do you want a large arbor reel mid arbor reel or traditional reel. I love large arbor reels because they help you retrieve line quick while keeping your line stored in much larger coils as to reduce line memory. Another determine factor will be do you want a drag.

If you are just starting out I would suggest getting a Dan Bailey reel. They have recently started manufacturing reels and have a large arbor reel with a drag for about $100 tight lines should carry or be able to order these reels for you.
