Westfield River, MA

Thursthouse

Tight Loins
Has anyone fished the EB of the Westfield river in MA? From what I've been reading, the Chesterfield gorge seems to be a good stretch of water. Will be out there camping/fishing in 2 weeks. Curious if there are any specific flies I should be tying up in preparation besides the usual suspects.

Following all the advice you guys provided below, we fished the Westfield River for 3 days this past weekend. The first day was a little slow as the water was up and we were unfamiliar with the water, but we did manage a few fish.

There was an incredible dragonfly hatch and we saw them at every step in their life cycle which was pretty amazing. I was hand catching the nymphs (which are massive) on the water’s edge.

The second day was much better fishing and we landed quite a few. Every fish came on nymphs and the hot flies were 20 incher stones and WD-40s.

The Chesterfield Gorge was beautiful (and we spotted moose tracks, but no moose), however we ventured out to a WTS that held browns and brookies. The river/stream was beautiful, but the water was gin clear and the fish spooked long before we could get within casting distance. Only my buddy managed a single trout all morning.

All in all it was a great trip filled with laughing, drinking, camping and of course, fish.

Yea, I was very impressed with the quality of fish - only one fish I caught had stubby fins, and most had pretty nice coloration. Will without a doubt be back - and not nearly as much pressure as I would expect with how accessible most of the Gorge was.
