Using a magnetic net release

Andy

Just finished a River Runs Through it!
I just bought a Tight Line magnetic net release so I could hang my net with the handle down. I'm finding that it's very awkward and difficult for me to re-connect the net after use.

The most successful way to align the magnets for reconnection seems to be to bring the hoop over the top of my head. I'm not too successful sliding the net up the center of my back, which to me is the logical way it should be done.

Is there an easy way or something I'm overlooking?

Are holding onto the magnet as you reach around your back to reconnect or the handle of the net? I always hold the net by the magnet so I can hit the other magnet more easily. Just keep your fingers out of the way, those magnets are strong and will pinch.

My magnetic net release is on my handle not my loop/bow, but my brother has his setup the same as you and he does the same thing. Trying to align them going up the center of you back is almost impossible. He uses his left hand to hold the magnet on his vest and his right hand aligns the net over the shoulder. The coned magnetic net release design might be easier to align than your flat designed one, but not enough to buy another one imo.

Andy,

I usually just move it up and down my back until it hear it click into place.
Sometimes it catches quickly, sometimes it takes a couple trys.

I've seen some guys hook it to the loop of the net instead of the handle. I have mine connected to the handle, so I hold the loop of the net when searching for the magnet on the back of my vest.

edit: If I catch a fish I usually just leave the net hanging until I'm ready to move to another spot, rather than trying to reattach it after each fish.

I have my magnet on the hoop side so I can reach behind my back and quickly grab the handle.

When putting it back I find it's easier to reach over your shoulder and hold the magnet in the general vicinity of the corresponding magnet on your vest.

I still have the find a different spot to put my license holder, because the metal pin interferes with the magnet on my vest and makes it cock sideways.

I haven't carried a net in years but when I did I used the same method that has already been mentioned here. Simply hold the magnet in hand swing the net behind my back and hold in vacinity of the other half and bang they popped together.

That I would assume is from the plate they installed in your head after your wife hit you with the fring pan..:blackeye::blackeye::blackeye::blackeye::blackeye:

sorry to hear about the frying pan BB....hope that plate doesn't reflect on the water when you're fishing

I don't use a net much anymore , but if I do need to I have it attached to a quick disconnect off a custom ring off my wader belt or the side of my chest pack so it sits waist level and toward the rear under my stripping arm, It is much easier than reaching behind yourself. F/T

I was hoping the two magnets would literally snap together if I got them within about 4" of each other but that doesn't seem to be the case. I suspect I'm going to have to do more fumbling and experimenting with this problem. The L.L. Bean release sells for a whopping $35 and I'm wondering if the magnets are more powerful making them easier to connect? Only negative thought I have is that magnets too powerful would be harder to disconnect.

This has the makings of being like everything else new that I buy in that I have to get several different ones to finally find the right one!
