Used Equipment

One Love One Life
Hi,

I was hoping for some info on some good choices for a used rod and reel for trout fishing. I thought my money would go further if I could find something used but Im overwhelmed by the choices.

I saw a post about the LL Bean Streamline package for $164. This about my price range to get started on a reel and rod. I was hoping to find something with extra spools though.

Thanks for your help

I was going to suggest albright tackle but their website is no longer......

Midnight, a good suggestion for you would be to hit ebay for an Echo Classic, around $100 and they are really good rods. There are quite a few reels around $50. The Okuma SLV is a killer deal at $40-60. You can also get a Pflueger Medalist 1494 for around $25, which balances well with a 4 or 5 weight Echo.

That's a damn shame! I've been eyeing the A-5 8wt for the salt. I bought two of their rods in December, and they are awesome! I hope they pay their damn bill before I have an extra $150 I don't know what else to do with.

was it mine?:)

cant go wrong with it. hassle free lifetime guarantee. add in a spare spool and it's still around 200.

My friend got a couple of rods and reels and wants to part with a nice rod and reel . The rod is a St.Croix R764-2 7' 6" 2pc for a 4wt and a Cabelas Prestige reel very nice for the money lawn cast only and has a very nice action he is asking $150 obo. for all reel is loaded with a wt forward 4 and backing and the rod has waranty cards.

Info on Used Equipment

Im not looking for used equipment on this forum

Im looking for advice on what brands and models that are good when buying used equipment.

Please dont move my topic to the wanted section

Im thinking my $200 can buy a better used setup for trout then a new setup. If you know some bullet proof trout rods and reels I will likely find used I would enjoy the info.

Moonbeam:

Ok now I know where you are coming from.

I suggest that you write out in detail what your budget is, the type of equipment you are looking for, age range .. it is important, colour of cloth materials you wish for, such as but not limited to Vests, brand names of those items you might consider, and size.

Your post was way to vague.

The more and greater the detail the better the response.

There's no such thing as a "bulletproof" rod but...

I've had good experience with Cortland (Diamondback), Lamiglass, and Fenwick.
I've been disappointed with Scott, and Eagle Claw.
I've had both good and bad experiences with Orvis.
I've heard good things about Sage, LL Bean, Redington, and TFO.

BTW: Topic has been moved back to "Rods / Reels / Lines / Leaders & Tippets", and merged with the other topic you started about the same subject.

Right now Im looking for a rod and reel. I haven't made up my mind about weight yet. I think Im leaning to 5-6wt rod and a matching reel with an extra spool. My budget is $200 for a rod and reel. Im looking for a list of rods and reels I may find used that will be better then the LL Bean streamlight or equivilant. Maybe its best to go with the LL Bean. Thats what Im triing to figure out.

Thanks and sorry for not being more specific

What about the entry-level Sage rods? I've read nothing but good about those, and they are built by soccer moms in Bainbridge Island, WA. What's pushing you toward LL Bean? Brand recognition? They don't exactly eat, breathe, hallucinate fly fishing.

i bought a st croix flystart combo brand new with a sage line for 120. local fly shops all seem to be running real sweet deals. with a budget of 200 you should be able to get some new gear for under that.

Make sure the warranty isn't void with sierratradingpost.com. Here we go again, I know that Albright doesn't warranty items purchased there.

might have opened a can of worms here. dont know the history of some of these companies. well we could always just post a flurry of bad "press" on neff and get the hyde result!

I tried out sierra yesterday, ordered some wet-wading shorts, a bottle of floatant, and 6 $1.50 spools of Rio tippet.

Do you know what action you are looking for? Bean describes the streamlight as medium fast, but it seems on the slower end of that spectrum. I know the Sage Fli is considerably faster, don't know about the launch; they both retail for around 200 (if you can find a Fli), but you might be able to find a used one (or close-out Fli) cheap.

If the bean rod meets your needs, I'd go with that over any used rod just for the backing bean gives all their products. Its not american made, it's not as glamorous as other brands, and fly fishing isnt bean's primary industry, but it's quality, reasonably priced gear from a consumer-first company, and you won't have to worry about damage from a prior owner.

Buying used gear is like buying a used car; you might be able to get more bang for your buck, but unless you're buying from a friend, it can be a big time investment (and sometimes leap of faith) to make sure you're not getting ripped off.

That said, if you're not too overly particular what you want, and/or if you're not in a rush, sit around and watch the listings; something is bound to turn up that fits the bill.

I have been very happy with the Temple Fork Outfitters Professional series rods. I have a 4 weight and a 6 weight. They are pretty cheap and perform well. Also, they have a no questions asked repair/replace policy. I busted a section and paid only $20 handling fee for the replacement.

I second TFO, good value for the money.

Well to my surprise my step father had a rod and reel in the attic. Nothing to special but has 3 spools for the reel all with line. Now I have more questions then when I started. Maybe I should start new posts.

One questions if Fly ID. I have a picture I want to post

2nd can line that was on a spare spool have its memory erased? And whats the best way. The coils are tight because no backing was used.

How old? Make-model?

Is the finish intact?
Try stretching the line to remove memory.
Don't pull hard enough to break it...

BTW: You started the topic, if you want to change the subject, or start a new one ... your call.

Its just an old cheapo rod. No name its pea green. Probably fiberglass. Im taking it out to some water this afternoon. The real is an old Martin 64 with extra spools. One of the reels is marked with the line Cortland 333 WF6F. The rod is 7'. If I like this and it works okay Im going to invest in flies and line and maybe a TFO rod later. Any way here is a pic of the flies I got with it. Names would be great so I know where to start.

I can't see all the flies, and some look like old patterns in a yellow-cover tying book I lost over the years, but here's my best whack at it:
1-4 beetles
8 black ant
9 royal wulff parachute?
10 blood worm?
19 elk hair caddis
21-23 muddler minnows
24 bwo comparadun?
25 crayfish
27 black nose dace
36 prince nymph?
42 43 water boatmen?
46, 48, 49, 54 wooly worm
55 royal coachman
52 beadhead gold ribbed hare's ear
