I've never seen or heard of anyone building up that ball of dubbing in the thorax to catch those X-wraps at a good angle.

I use a somewhat smaller thorax and add a figure 8 or 2 between the wings, but the effect is very similar. This pattern is by far the most effective pattern for difficult trout that can inspect your fly carefully. Thorax duns for Sulphurs and BWOs down to a size 20 have saved the day for me on waters like the Letort, Falling Springs, and Little Lehigh. Not the most durable fly, but when a difficult trout presents itself it works like a charm.
