Tying the BWO Quill Nymph

Matt Grobert

6/0 Olive Danville
Here's our latest tying video, it's a tungsten head quill nymph that my friend Doug Freemann uses with great success. Doug is a member of the US Youth Fly Fishing Team, and he typically fishes this fly in tandem with another, using Euro-nymphing techniques. I have fished it with good success also.

Matt - Very nice tie and excellent stripped peacock quill. I noticed it was "Polish" brand quill and have checked around but could not find them anywhere in the US. Did you have to order them from the manufacturer overseas?

I have some of that stuff, I used the dyed quills for some dry flys. Honestly, strip a regular piece of quill with a pencil eraser, same effect on the finished fly, fraction of the cost.

Thank you, Pat. You can get those quills from PerformanceFlies.com - Kevin Compton. He sells all the Euro materials. Those quills are real nice, well-marked, and they come in a bunch of colors.

You are right, it's not that hard and far less costly. Tim is making a video on a simple way to strip the quills and color them. We'll post it here when it's completed.

Kevin Compton is the man. He has alot of interesting materials, good prices, and ties some bad-ass flies to boot.

Matt, extend my thanks to Doug for the inspiration for this video. I tied up a bunch and did quite well at the Mono on Saturday and equally as well on the SBR yesterday.

Will do, they work well. There are lots of patterns coming along being tied similar to this one. I like the simplicity of it. The other way this fly is tied is with the hot spot being tied at the butt instead of the collar.
