Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

The WB has officially seen its day

I fish the above mentioned streams and never see another soul.........it is about taking a walk and finding nice spots that are your own...when someone else find it, I start looking again...not to say I don't fish pressured waters..ie(the gorge, pnt mountain, pequest hatchery row, and the such,) but if someone is on one of my "secret spots", I find a new one....there are thousands of miles of river, all you need do is look...
I live in the most densely populated state in the country, and can still find unmolested wild trout...:)

Living up to your username! Love the positivity. It is amazing that, given how insanely crowded this area is, we find any open water to fish. Thank god our favorite hobby is so damn hard to do.

You can drive up there on any given day, and if you burn a little felt and do some searching, find a quiet spot to fish on the system. The only people bitching are the drift boat prima donnas who get all wound up and whine because they don't catch a 22" fish on every drift to post hero shots of.

Was planning to float on Monday and Tuesday next week. Now I'm depressed:)

yes i would stay home if I were you. These fish are too smart for you. They are highly educated and are working on their masters degree in entomology.

I also fish the streams Jeff k mentioned. Someday the fish want sunken spinners other days they want them on top. I had timesduring the sulphers when one day all the fish would take were emerges and the next day they wanted high riding duns. That's what makes trout fishing fun ,figuring out the puzzle. I also find it funny that the guys that complain all the time about crowding are the ones that are on the water the most.

Here goes TT your voice of reason..... The WBD is a less than 2.5 hr drive to more than 25 million people, i have never fished it, i prefer smaller water with NOBODY.... that being said, it is a fabled and outstanding water probably the best east of the Mississippi, I am sure it gets crowded and crazy at times, yet it endures!!! Preserve it, fish it, and defend it!!!!!! And be kind to those who are looking to the stream for the same solace as yourself they really aren't any different than you are.

TT so true. Since most people on here believe the internet doesnt cause the problem with crowding issues. Can you do me a favor and broadcast over the Internet the spot you fish that is "smaller and has less crowds" so I can go there. I promise I will only post pics of a trophy fish that I catch from there. Thanks in advance.

Everybody here is a guide. Where have you been? Starting today, I am also a guide.

I just sorta have a problem with a guy who used to HOPE for full boats of folks to take down the river, NOW complaining that too many people are using the river.
I guess when one was whoring out the D for $395 a trip plus tip, boat traffic was OK...

But now, I guess, it's the waders too. And callin' out the business with the CHEAP cabins? As if the people staying at the OTHER places don't get on the river SOMEWHERE...

STOP fishing and be part of the solution to your problem.

Every creek in the Smokies is full of wild trout. Just sayin.

There sure are. Most of you lazy old farts are just that. Lazy! All you have to do is just hike a few miles and stop being a little girl. Then you can fish in solitude.

Good, I'm coming to fish it. I'm bringing my clients too, since I'm guiding now.

This kind of post is exactly why it is called fishing and not catching. I can sympathize with a bad day on the water. You pay for gas, tolls, and a long ride. We all have them. I too have had my share of bad days. I was on the Beverkill in the beginning of June. There were Drakes Brown, Slate and Green, March browns, Caddis and all coming off. Dan and I were saying we are going to knock the hell out of them today. That was not the case. I caught 2 fish all day the combined length of both fish was less then 13 inches and I was lucky to catch them. They chased a fly that I was retrieving to make my next cast. Mike hit the nail on the head there are more factors then just pressure that regulate feeding behavior of fish. I am no different I love to catch fish and enjoy those days when you can’t keep them off the end of the line. But I have found when it is tough and frustrating and you are digging in your box to figure out what you are not doing that is right. When you look back and run the scenarios in your head. They are actually the best days. When it is easy and the fish are cooperative you do not have to reflect on what was going on. On the tough days all of us do reflect on what was going on you realize that you are not the hero fly fisher men you think you are and you have so much more to learn.

You don't really believe the WB was some well guarded secret that was only exposed after Al Gore invented the internet do you?

I'm still waiting for you to give me a few of those "less crowded streams" you fish.

I'm going to dismiss this entire premise that the WB has seen its day. Although I haven't fished it this year as often as I normally do, it has been largely empty when I was up and the fishing was nothing short of spectacular with multiple 10 - 20+ large, wild fish days on dry flies. So if that is what constitutes a river that has seen its better days, then you guys can leave and I'll suck it up and stay to keep watch....

What are you complaining about..The West Branch is the finest fishery on the East..The rest of the Catskills suck.. you know all the big fish are on the West Branch.. Stop trying to confuse the tourists just so you can have all those 28 inch West Branch Browns to yourself...

Lol. The westbranch is ok but I will tell you what, my biggest fish always come from the most famouse river in the whole wide world the " beaverkill". Everytime I go I always see huge wild browns in every pool. Just can't get away from them. I still don't understand why I don't see enough people fishing that river. It's never crowded.

Well now it will be...you know cause of the Internet and all

The funny thing is that I always hear from the Beaverkill loyalists how ridiculously crowded that river is compared with the other Catskill streams.:) The bottom line is that once we fall in love with any specific water and see even one other angler fishing it, it has gone to hell and will never recover. Yet the reality is that fishing pressure is at or near an all-time low given greatly declining license sales the past many decades. While it looks like license sales have bottomed out and are on a slight up tick, they are far, far below historic levels.

On any given day, based on numerous factors out of our direct control such as flows, holiday weekends, hatches, etc., streams/rivers will be packed with anglers. Your choice is to b*tch on the internet, stay home, or find other water. Because tomorrow you're bound to have them all to yourself once again.:victory:
