The official NEFF Beer thread.

Rusty mentioned Sam Adams in one of his posts today so rather than hijack that thread, I've decided to create the official beer thread. :) I have a few free minutes here at work before a day of meetings where we'll talk about a lot of nothing and get nothing out of it. They give reason to hiring project managers who have no clue as to what the hell they're managing. :) Anyway...

I used to enjoy Sam Adams but a few years ago I started venturing out into strange new brews and have come to the conclusion that it's just like any other bar beer. Of course if you get it on tap, that's a different story.

There are so many micro brews out there and one is better than the other. Each time you think you found the best beer, something else creeps up. The seasonal beers are by far the best.

So right now I'm on Victory 12 brewed out in PA (Available all year). It's a rich spicy beer and not hoppy at all. I don't care for the hoppy stuff (IPA's)...

ABV: 12.0%

Let's hear what you're drinking and please don't say Corona or Bud or Coors.. they're all piss water.

How is drinking Bud like having sex in a canoe?

They are both fucking close to water!

I like hoppy IPAs (Magic Hat, Sierra Nevada, Dale's Pale Ale) and Irish reds (Killians), but if I can find it, my favorite beer is this one:

old-speckled-hen.jpg

Or, failing that, a cold Coors Light shotgunned before having sex in a canoe.<label for="rb_iconid_7">

I'm a hop junky lately. Personally I steer away from heavy stouts.

A lot of six points stuff is really good. They have a superb pils and cream ale. I have yet to find anything I didn't like from Oskar Blues, Dales pale ale, Mammas little pils, all good.

Been quite a few decent Saisons too.

Big thing you have to watch is a lot of the macro brew companies are coming up with their versions except the usual adjunct bull shit is added. They can't resist cheapening the beer. I got snookered by some batch 19. Same old swill.

If I go cheap, it's PBR.

Only two beers I don't like... Blue Moon and Miller High Life.

Best beer? Dogfish Head 90 minute by a long shot

I just loved mass brewed consistency:
Miller Light
Miller High Life --in a bottle
Guinness

North Jersey folks into microbrews should check out The Shepard and the Knuckle Head in Haledon. Outstanding selection of brews with 90 taps and the bar people know them all pretty well. You conservatives might not like the hippy crowd though. For some reason, they're crazy about Kerouac and Ginsberg

The Shepherd & The Knucklehead Pub | Where we celebrate the duality in man!

I have been all about the really hoppy beers lately. Just recently acquired a case of Three Floyd's Zombie Dust which is incredible. Also have been drinking Sierra Nevada Celebration and Ruthless Rye, Troeg's Perpetual IPA and Nugget Nectar. Sixpoint Bengali Tiger is also pretty good. Carton 007 out of Atlantic Highlands is another really good one. Here in Monmouth county you can get growler fills at Shrewsbury Wine and Liquor. They have a lot of oddball stuff that you don't otherwise see on tap in this area very often, and they change the selection with the seasons.

To give the taste buds a rest once in a while I also like the Old Speckled Hen, Boddington's, and Guiness.

I like tons of different beers and for a variety of reasons. I stay away from most of the mass produced beers except Yuengling Lager. But Dick Yuengling and his packaging business paid for my home and lifestyle for many years and I owe that man a great deal of gratitude and will always buy his products. I wish he and his family all the best and it's good to know he's now the largest US owned brewer.

Had a local one in upstate NY that I know FF will recognize that I liked recently - Porkslap Pale Ale. The logo is hysterical and the beer was good. It all depends on what I'm in the mood for.

Yards IPA has been my fav for a while...their brewery is in Philly on the river, I used to go to a skatepark that was in one of their buildings...their other stuff is ok but the IPA is great, don't like the Phila. Pale (has that wheaty/Belgium flavor I don't care for) This stuff got me drinking the hippy beers year round when I used to drink the piss beer in the warmer months...when drinking schwag beer I tend to go something Miller but piss is piss so whatever works except I find Coors extra pissy

I have 15 gallons of a Belgian-style Strong Ale in secondary fermentation right now. We used a 31 lbs. of grain we cracked just before we threw it in the mash tun along with some sugar, clear belgian candi sugar and honey. Very lightly hopped.

15 more gallons of a Wheat Ale in primary fermentation. More of a European-style wheat with it being very light on the hops. Cracked coriander and bitter orange peel to round out the wheat.

My favorite beer is La Fin du Monde, a Belgian-style Tripel made in Canada. Second would be the Cinq Cents (white) Chimay. Weihenstephaner's Hefeweizen is my favorite hefe. St. Bernardus Witbier is another favorite.

The East Coast brews I prefer are Yuengling in the can because of their packability, Saranac & Troegs breweries.

Brews I like to enjoy while fishing out west are Cold Smoke, Trout Slayer, Moose Drool, Pyramid Apricot, Alaskan Amber and of course Kokanee in the can, again for packability purposes.

My economical choice...PBR

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

or PBR, Steel City Reserve, Shimdts, .....come to think of it I've rarely come across a beer I didn't like. :hubbahubba:

I admit to being a beer snob... Life is too short to drink cheap, canned beer.. I enjoy tasting Microbrews and there are too many good ones to list...But I always enjoy the Magic Hat seasonals... Regular beers in my fridge are Pilsner Uruquell, Chimay Triple and Dos Equis (I know..but the taste always brings me back to Mexican beaches)..

Beers that will never hit my bladder again...Coors, PBR (just dont get it), Natty Light....

Don't give up on Natty until you've tried Natty Ice - its the nector of the (college) gods

I am surprised no one has mentioned this classic..the oldest pilsner on the planet...

Pilsner Urquell.jpg
If I drink beer..and I rarely do
it would be a Pilsner Urquell....

Here are a few great ones.

From left to right...

Fegley's - This is a holiday beer and only available around Christmas time. Too bad because it's pretty damn good and pay attention here 10.5% Alcohol.
Mendocino - This is pretty much available anytime. It's a strong beer and will knock you over pretty quick. It's not my favorite but it's good.
Epic - I haven't tried this one yet but I can almost guarantee the experience will be.. ok, i won't go there.
Heresy - The alcohol content in this one is up there too. The key here is "Whiskey Barrels"... Whenever you see a beer aged in Whiskey barrels, GET IT.
INNIS & GUNN - I'm familiar with 4 different flavors of this. The original is my favorite. Then you have this one here "Irish Whiskey Cask" and it's got a nice flavor, a little strong but overall it's good. They also have aged in Rum Barrels which is also pretty damned good.
St. Bernardus - What can I say. This one is probably the best one in the bunch. Again, you won't find it anywhere right now (except at my house). I have 2 left and I'm not sharing it.

Now TOM... Put down that Blue Moon pumpkin harvest and try a bottle of this $11.00 pint. You'll never buy blue moon again. I've tried so many Pumpkin beers and generally, they all have a pumkin flavor added to them (like Blue Moon) but the pumpkin is infused into this brew which makes it much more flavorful and enjoyable and actually tastes like it was meant to be rather than an after thought.

Full Sail - This one has been aging for a few months now. Just waiting to pull the trigger on it. This one is 15 bux so I'm a bit hesitant.
Finally.... the Lost Abbey - This is like a $20.00 bottle of 12.7fl oz beer. You won't catch anyone from the streets of Detroit sipping one of these when you can buy a whole case of 40oz Colt 45's for around the same price. I haven't tried this one yet. I'm afraid to open the bottle. I've had it for a few months now but I think the time is coming... Like maybe tomorrow. :)

So there you have it. Anyone try any of these?

There are others I'm into like Midas Touch. My favorite casual beer right now is this Innus & Gunn (Middle)...
festivesplendourthechristmasgiftboxfromi-1.jpg

Do yourselves a favor and give it a try. It's 11.99 or so for a 4 pack.

Everyone has to bang a fat chick, yours just happens to be Dos Equis. Another fave lately is Hitachino. If your ever in a good sushi place and they try to serve that Sapporo swill but have this, your in luck.

Funny you mention Victory Brewery. This past winter I discovered their Hop Devil and have become a big fan. Then of course there is always my standby. Rogue Brewery Brutal IPA.

I'm drinking this right now:

Heady1.jpg

If you know anything about beer, like IPA's and hops, then you know this is the shit (look it up if you're not familiar). If you don't like IPA's and hops, then you need to harden the fuck up.

When I'm not drinking this, I have a soft spot in my heart for Duvel.

I love beer. As Ben Franklin said,“Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” I enjoy everything from miller lite to Trappist ales, to me its pretty much all good. I have brewed my own beer for almost 20 years. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Bill Koch of the Sam Adams brewing co. for enjoying the the array of quality beer that is readily available today. If I had to choose one style, which would be very difficult, i would have to choose the classic German Lagers and beers brewed in that tradition. Another beauty of beer is, you can buy a great six pack for $10 in any style, if you drink wine $10 is an entry level price for a drinkable bottle of wine.

You boobs will drink anything that has a wierd label on it. Nothing like Corona, i donk care what DC thinks. He also likes that electric fairy music. So that should tell you something!

I like seeing and hearing about what others are drinking when it comes to beer and I think we are fortunate to live in a time with so many great brews, but let's face it - we've all slummed at times. Especially in the broke days of our youth. My worst offense was Blatz in cans. We're talking college and only when we had to collectively scrounge up enough funds to play a few rounds of quarters. Back in the mid to late 80s, a case Blatz cans was a lowly $5.25. And "regular beers" like PBR were several dollars more. Hamms and Foxhead are two more that come to mind when you just needed that buzz but the wallet was nearly barren of singles. I remember getting a (now) semi-famous national TV broadcaster on a major cable news network hammered on Blatz in his dorm room and trashing the place as we left. Ah yes, the good old days.

C'mon - let's hear it. You know you've gotten drunk on garbage beer. How low have you stooped?
