I'm an early riser, the rest of the house was asleep so I decided to take a drive from Penfield to the Salmon Creek to check it out, without fly gear, which was a good thing as I would not have been able to use it.
First off, the water in the inlet is low, due to the lake being low. Talking with the guys fishing there it's about 3' lower than usual. Because it was so low and no real rain to speak of, the creek was not running more than a trickle & these guys were fishing the marina with spin gear, floats and egg sacks. Let me tell you, there are a lot steelhead in there, and it sounds like they stay in all winter with domestic rainbow showing up in late August, leaving right about now. A guy there confirmed a few other spots within 20 minutes of that location that I surely will be checking out next time we visit. The brown trout were starting to show up as well, and they were all slabs, 24" and larger. There were a few steelhead in there pushing the 36" mark.
It's only about 20 minutes from the brother/sister in law's house. My wife already suggested next time we go up, it'll be Friday night so we can fish the following AM. I can't wait and I have my homework/research cut out for me. Now we don't have to make the drive to Oak Orchard. There were no out of towners at this small location, and only a few locals, all nice guys willing to talk.....probably because I didn't have a rod in hand.
We also visited the Genesee brewery last night, they have opened up a decent restaurant and taproom. I didn't know they brewed Dundee beer. I enjoyed the Dundee October brew and IPA with dinner. Purchased a growler filled with the IPA for only $7 and enjoyed a nice cigar and the growler with my brother-in-law last night.
