Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Southwest NJ fly fishing

Yellowstone

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
Hi- I’m new to the group, new to South Jersey. We moved to Gloucester County and I need to find some good streams to go fly-fishing in the area, can you give recommendations. What fly patterns are successful here?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />

Thanks- Yellowstone

Get a PA license too!

Well, you are actually closer to some trout waters in Chester and Delaware County PA than NJ.

I've never fished for trout in south jersey, but from what I hear on the board, there aren't many places. I know of the Manasquan River and the Toms River. The better trout water seems to be concentrated in the northern half of the state, although there seem to be little creeks and streams all over the state, most of which aren't written about anywhere. You'd have to do some exploring for these though, but I'm sure you could find trout somewhere.

And if not, maybe you could take a trip a little further north in which case you could get a plethora(yes I said plethora :thumb: ) of info about streams up here.

I live in South Jersey also. I live in Mount Laurel in the Rancocas Woods Section. I fish the Northern NJ waters and the Catskills as well. Now for not wanting to travel into that area, we have a slogan down here. In South Jersey, a fly fishermenns best friend is a PA license. Honestly, other than the Catskills, the PA waters are much better and the fishing and oppurtunities abundant. Shoot me an e-mail and we can discuss further.

Trout streams?

Trout streams?....Yellowstone; I've lived in Gloucester County for 61 years and still can't find 'em!

Seriously, F&G stocks a lot of lakes and ponds in S. Jersey, but the LMB eat them up so fast it's tough hooking one....however, if you go to a 5-6 wt. and toss a Clouser, Wooly Bugger or Popper, you'll get the nice big LMB that ate the trout......

Plus, the Yellow Perch, big Bluegill, chain Pickerel, Carp (God forbid), white Bass, etc. are great fun on fly.

Welcome to the Garden State.

SJ fly fishing pretty much entails either:

1). Largemouth, pickerel, or perch/sunny fishing
or
2). Saltwater fishing.

There are some trout streams down here (upper Maurice and Cohansey Rivers), but if you're looking for picturesque rocky streams with waterfalls and such, you're in the wrong geologic area!! Because SJ is mostly just a big sand spit, our streams are low gradient, brush-choked, sand/pebble bottomed, cedar-stained waters that are fairly acidic (eg. not good trout habitat). The state stocks some of these streams, but trout really don't hold over well and access is usually limited. You have to go up north to the Toms before you start getting less acidic water that trout can hold over in.
