Salmon River Reports

Sunrise- Sunset- for TOMMOROW--Rise-6:50 -set-7:04 - Here is your Salmon River report, brought to you by Salmon River Sports Shop, for < Wednesday, Sept.,20, 2006. < ****** Attention***The water will be at 335 cfs until further notice.--Thursday Morning. The fish are finally here.Right now, from the Ballpark downstream to the staircase, the fish are being caught.I am seeing alot of fish.--NOW its time to be here! I have been saying all year to hold off,and now I am saying get up here. The weather will determine how long the run will last, but for now the next two days at least will be good.If it keeps raining, the weekend will be good too. It rained quite hard today and the Salmon River is as high as its been all year,(about 500cfs actual with runoff). The rain was cold and the water is merky, and the fish are starting to unload out of the estuary.I think the next couple of days will be the best so far this year.We will see.I also think the Sandy creeks will finally get fish.We will see..Just keep calling our "SALMONHOTLINE" at Salmon River Sports Shop (315)- 298-4343 or watch our web site as I will update it daily for the most accurate and up to date info on the Salmon River. The Weather and water levels are always important and both are obtainable from links on this site. Whitaker's Fly Shop report
On Wednesday heavy lake effect rain showers along with some cooler temperatures moved through our area, which did produce some runoff. In the lower end of the river at the Douglaston Salmon Run the morning was slow, but late in the afternoon a major run of kings and cohos were moving through. Anglers that came off the water last night from the lower end of the river were very excited. Here is what some anglers had to say; Dan from New Jersey in his opinion desribed the action as the "mother load". For those of you who downhill ski, the boys from Vermont called it a "Powder Day". Greg from Bath NY and Joe from Jamestown NY described the action as "WOW" and said it was unreal. SUGGESTED PATTERNS: Estaz eggs in chart, pink, orange or blue. Comets in chart, pink and orange. Stoneflies in blk/pink, blk/purple and blk/chart. Egg sucking leeches in pink/purple or black with an orange or black with a pink head.

Fat Nancy's Report
A very large run of Cohos have been moving through the lower Black hole for about 2 hours now, Dave from Fat Nancy's is fishing there now and is saying on a scale of from 1 to 10 this run is about a 9! This report was posted at 5:19 pm on 9/20/06.

We are located on the short bridge of the Salmon River in down town Pulaski, on Rt 11.Thank You.** The water will be at 335 cfs until further notice.---We had a hell of a west wind on the lake today. That always brings fish into the estuary. Sometimes it even make the fish run the river. Its 7pm and it just started to rain. I have no way of knowing how much rain we will get tonight, but definately keep an eye on tommorow! I will post an early report if we get a big run. Today was a carbon copy of yesterday. It was a slow to medium day on the Salmon River today. The only place they caught fish all day,at a medium pace, was the town pool. The Trestle was good this morning til the fish moved out. They were really scattered upstream and they actually held in between the pools. If we get more rain tonight we will get another run.If we don't,tommorow will be just like today.

Whitaker's Fly Shop report 27.9.06

Things remained the same on Wednesday with a few fish being caught here and there and most anglers reporting a tough day. Some anglers fishing the Papermill to RT 2A section of river reported a decent day, while the Douglaston Salmon Run reported a slow day with a small push of fish mid day. The fish that are in the river are scattered and covering lots of water has been helpful. SUGGESTED PATTERNS: Pink Comet Poms, (Fly of the week) The Instigator, Estaz eggs in chart, pink, orange or blue. Comets in chart, pink and orange. Black or olive woolly buggers, Egg sucking leeches in pink/purple or black with an orange or black with a pink head.

With the ongoing release @ 350 cfs, This is the way the season may be. If we end up getting the rain that's in the forcast for tonight and Friday, there could be another push this weekend.

The water in the Salmon River is already getting off color and puffed up. Tommorow will probably be awsome in Pulaski! Douglaston report tonight will tell the story! This rain and high water should make for great weekend as the fish in the estuary will finally run upstream. I will keep you posted. There has been fish in the town pool again today. There were fish again below the Black hole where that fallen tree is. I have seen quite a few browns along with the salmon. There has been fish in the Black hole, the long bridge pool, town pool and the Scholler hole for two days. Other than that,it is slow to medium on the Salmon River. They are calling for rain on and off for the next few days. Cross your fingers 'cause thats what we need to get a big run up from the estuary. Was up there the 24th-25th and kings and steelies were everywhere. Sportsman pool and the cemetary were full of em. Was supprised on how few people were at cemetary to. Goin back up Sunday, hopefully the water goes up or the temps drops. If I could figure out how to post pics I would. Any help?

Fished between the black holes all day Friday 9/29 and the morning of 9/30.

Friday morning started out slow in a steady rain but picked up quickly. Around 1pm, all hell broke loose. Fresh run of beautiful cohos has just arrived. Lots of steel and browns too. It was pure mayhem. Lost track of hookups, must have had close to 50 all day. Landed and released a pair of nice browns. None of which I have photos with because my friends were too busy landing fish of their own. Had my first and second ever linescreamers on successive hookups...awesome.

Broke a big section off my rod tip on a steelie that took me 100+ yards from where I hooked him all the way down to the oak tree that fell above the little black hole. I still managed to land fish on the broken rod after that. Except my rod was no longer 9'...more like 7.5'.

Estaz eggs and crystal meth were the flies that worked the best. Even hooked a brown on a wooly bugger.

The crowds on Saturday were nuts. Seems that word spread quickly. After fishing non-stop from sun up to sun down on Friday, I was all salmoned out. I didn't even have the desire to fish on Sat. Made a few casts in the black hole and had two hookups before I called it a day. Was a spectator watching the circus the rest of the morning until my crew decided to head home.

Heard from another friend that on Sunday a guy took a swim through the fast water by the island above the little black hole. Current took him a good 200 yards before he made it out. Water was 1200+ cfs so I was surprised he made it out at all. Some people are just really stupid and try to cross where they shouldn't. I witnessed over a dozen close calls on Sat morning myself.

You didnt foul hook the steelie did you C&R? I have found that most of the time when a rod breaks it is due to either the fish being foul hooked or the angler grabed the rod above the cork or a combo of both.

No foul hooks. Not my game. As soon as I hooked up with him he went berserk. Definitely a mouth hookset as he was trying to shake it off when he went airborne multiple times. At the end of the run by the island there is an oak tree that prevents you from going any further. It extends into the tail of the pool. Once a fish goes past that point all you can do is hope that you can horse it back out and force it back upstream. As I was holding my ground (while everyone was waiting and watching) I was holding the rod sideways pointing upstream when I heard a snap. I didn't know where the sound came from it was but the tip was still intact at that point, or so it appeared. A minute later I cut my line b/c I knew there was no chance of getting him in. So I reeled in my line and walked back upstream to where I hooked up with him. On my very next cast (on the swing) I see the rod tip keel over. It might have very well been the way I gripped the rod at the end of the fight (with two hands). It was basically a tug-of-war at that point.

C&R:

I recently experienced a loss of a rod. Heard the snap... would have been normally a sick feeling ... but I knew I was going to get another new spey rod ..... Now if this one snaps.... well, I hope not anytime soon.

Sounds like you had a very good day.... I made it up there Saturday night, and departed Sunday.. didn't get a chance to venture out to the river, however, every where I looked I saw the lads dragging stringers of nice size Kings to the fish cleaner...

Outstanding fishing report. Thanks.

As always, looking for that king to stay on the line...

**The water will be at 1000 cfs until further notice.---- Well, what a weekend! This was as good of a 4 day stretch in the lower half of of the Salmon River as anyone can expect. Here in Pulaski,They really hooked alot of fish. With the water being so high, it was hard to land them, but I sure saw alot of fish on stringers. The estuary has unloaded most of the fish that have been waiting, basically, the whole month of September. The estuary,Douglaston and Black hole have finally slowed down after 4 day of fantastic fishing. The town pool was still great today, but I expect most of this run to be upstream by tommorow,(from Rt 2a up).

Its only October 1st,so there are still alot of fish in the lake to come in.

I will keep you posted.Just keep calling our "SALMONHOTLINE" at Salmon River Sports Shop (315)- 298-4343

**The water will be at 750 cfs until further notice. The water will be comming down a bit tonight. That always moves fish around. The bulk of that big run is still upstream and also in Trout and Orwell Brook. The Sandys have a good run of fish. The lower half of the Salmon river is starting to see steelheads and Browns along with the Salmon. This comming weekend (Columbus) is always the most crowded of the year,as its a long weekend. Rooms will be scarce at best. I hope there will be as many fish this weekend as there were last weekend. We will see. Its only October 1st,so there are still alot of fish in the lake to come in. I will keep you posted. Just keep calling our "SALMONHOTLINE" at Salmon River Sports Shop (315)- 298-4343

Fat Nancy's

We have fish through out the river now with a good fresh mix of Kings and Steelhead coming into Douglaston yesterday late in the afternoon.Egg sacs and estaz flies in chartreuse are your best bet right now. The water is at 750 CFS until midnight tonight when it will be dropped to 500 CFS. Sunday night at midnight it will go to 335 CFS until midnight Tuesday 10/10/06. This report was posted at 9:20 am on 10/06/06.

Whitaker's 10.8.06
Please check the waterline for the latest update! Over the holiday weekend the weather was outstanding with blue skies and plenty of sunshine. If your looking for salmon the upper end of the river continues to produce the most salmon activity, with the occasional trout mixed in under heavy fishing pressure. If your trying to avoid the crowds the mid to lower section of river is your best bet. In the lower end of the river the Douglaston Salmon Run reported another good day with a mix of kings, steelhead and browns. SUGGESTED PATTERNS: Glo bugs in chart, orange, blue and oregon cheese. Estaz eggs in chart, pink, orange or blue. Comets in chart, pink and black. Black or olive woolly buggers, Egg sucking leeches in black with an orange or red head. EGG SACS in blue, pink and chart are also working well.

**The water will be at 500 cfs until further notice. Today was an all or nothing day.The guys who found fish, found alot of fish and the ones who didn't,well, didn't. The really big numbers of fish are on in the gravel spawning, whether its in the Salmon River, or one of the creeks. There are alot of spawning salmon upstream. There are new fish moving in,both salmon and trout, but in smaller numbers. The smaller streams all have fish and their water levels have receded. The fishing is very good for the guys who know how to find them. If you need help, stop in. I have a free map and some good info on where to go. Don't forget, this comming weekend (Columbus) is always the most crowded of the year,as its a long weekend. Rooms will be scarce at best. Its only October 1st, so there are still alot of fish in the lake to come in.

Fat Nancy's Report
Fishing continues to be steady with mostly Kings upstream and Steelhead down low. Great weather should be around again tomorrow with the water flow at 500 CFS until midnight Sunday and then being dropped to 335 CFS. This report was posted at 4:20 pm on 10/7/06.

Yankke Fly Shop Fishing Report for 10-8:
A mobbed weekend so far in Altmar NY with tons of Kings & Cohos & people of course. The statement of the day was this, "In all the years I've been coming up here to fish I've never seen so many people fishing in one spot". This is what we heard and it was a bit slow crowd wise down by us however there were people hooking up out back behind our shop. Our lodging guests did good at the DSR for steelhead and a few Kings but more steelhead than Kings. They're loving the egg sacs and BLUE GOO seems to be the favorite as they milk in the water and the sweet taste is what steelhead like.

Was up on the Salmon River both Wed and Thurs and here is what I can report.Day1 - If you like fishing with hundreds of of other fisherman than you should fish between Altmar and the Trestle. I think there was over 200 guys between the Barrell Hole and the Trestle Pool. Snagging hole down to Pineville was less fishing pressure. Had most of our hookups in the head of the Schoolhouse pool. We were 2 for 8 on the day. Big water 1,000 cfs without runoff made it tough to land fish. Plenty of fish around with a mixed bag of steel. Best patterns of the day were estaz egg imitations in pink and black. Pink and purple comets did very well also. Keep in mind that we FAIR hooked 8 fish. It makes me sick to see guys ripping in the river. It was all over the place. You can tell who the rippers are just by the gear they use - most of the time. The place was a zoo. I cant imagine how spooked the fish are up there in 335cfs. Day 2 We started bright and early in the head of the Schoolhouse around 5:30am.The reason being is that we knew it was loaded with fish and we figured we would fight the crowds. There were three guys already in the head before we got there. They were very cool guys from NJ.The place by sunrise was loaded with people as well as driftboats. We fished the pool from the School side. Within the first 15min or so it was mayhem. Fish everywhere being hooked up. The fish were stacked up in the head. Most people foul hooked fish but some fairhooks. You can always tell if a fish is fair hooked or foul hooked within the first minute. The difference is this: Fair hook- Head shakes- You have complete control of the fish. You can feel the head thrashing back and forth on your rod tip. Foul hook- More times than not the fish jumps all over the place. You have no control of the fish. At this point if that happens - break it off-no sense in playing a foul hoked fish in the pool for 15min while guys wait.We used the same patterns the previous day going 2 for 8. One steelhead about 4 pounds crushed a pink estaz pattern. Got the fish to the shore then popped off when i was going to take a photo. The second fish is the picture that I will have to wait to load up due to size. Nice fish that slammed a red estaz pattern. My buddy had a 20lb hen that fought us for a while then broke off right below the tailout by the wire when I went to net it. Too bad.I have a pic that is 2.27mb- can anyone tell me how to get it on this post?. They are saying that it is too large. Summary- Lots of fish around in the upper river. Flies -pink, black, red estaz patterns and comets in all colors size 8 and 10\Leaders- 6 and 8lb flurocarbonIF you want to avoid crowds, dont fish the upper river. Try diversions in high water. Fish are spread out Weather was great and we fished with several courteous and respectful people around us which was great. No rippers by us.P.S I will be updating this site with my pics from Kodiak Alaska which was in one word "awesome". I think you will enjoy them.Silver fishing in Sept.

Pulled out from below the cemetary. Weighed in at 25lbs. Caught by my friend. I hooked into about 7 but couldn't get any to hand. Ellis Cove is jumpin right now so get away from your Computer and get your a$$ up there now!

**The water will be at 335 cfs until further notice. We had a really good day in the lower end of the Salmon River today.
A fresh run of big kings came through town. They did really well from the staircase to the ballpark. It is the first good run of fish I have seen since the estuary unloaded two weeks ago. Speaking of the estuary, its loading back up with fish again. With the water being back down to 335, the fish are not just shooting strait to the top. They are migrating at more moderate pace which gives us a longer opertunity to cath them. There are still plenty of fish on the gravel spawning from the previous run two weeks ago, whether its in the Salmon River, or one of the creeks. There are alot of spawning salmon upstream. The smaller streams all have fish and their water levels have receded. The fishing is very good for the guys who know how to find them. The upper end of the river continues to produce plenty of action for salmon, with the occasional trout mixed in. The upper and lower fly fishing only areas, Ellis Cove, Trestle Pool and Sportsman Pool area have all been producing steady action on a daily basis. The crowd has thinned out but the upper end of the river still has a few high pressure areas. If your trying to avoid the crowds the mid to lower section of river is your best bet, especially if your looking for fresh fish and willing to walk. In the lower end of the river the Douglaston Salmon Run reported a good push of kings along with some browns and steelhead in the mix.

Can someone plz post a pic of comet fly that had been mentioned here?
How are those fished, dead drifted or swung like streamers ?
thanks!

Here ya go RedTag:

I like to swing Comets and I would say that is the way they are presented 80% of the time by most anglers. However, they certainly could be effective dead drifted in pockets.

I tied up a bunch of comets in various colors for my most recent SR outing. Had a few strikes (swinging) but it wasn't as effective for me as the estaz eggs and crystal meth patterns. Anywho, these instructions are simple to follow for a one-material comet pattern. I found that I preferred a flashy salt-water tying material (the name escapes me) over the iceabou. It was just easier to handle. For the bead chain eyes, just pick some up next time you go to Home Depot or local hardware store.

I found that fish hooked in mouth in the SR will usually head for the surface right away to shake the hook and at times will porpoise upstream or downstream (which is very cool if its a coho or steelie). Fish hooked in the tail will not...your rod will begin to move up and down in a very rapid motion in short bursts (a result of the transfer of energy of the fish moving its tail as it swims away from you). Fish hooked anywhere else will feel like you hooked a dead log (at least kings will). Its funny when you watch someone foul hook one and then act like they have a legal hookset. I have to admit that when I went up (9/29 - the day everyone was waiting for) I unintentionally foul hooked a few but there was nothing I could do about it. The fished were just stacked shoulder to shoulder. It was like a marching band. Needless to say, I broke off every foul hook right away.

Report from Whitaker's Fly Shop.

The fishing pressure increased over the weekend which is normal for this time of year. If your trying to avoid the crowds the mid to lower section of river is your best bet, especially if your looking for fresh fish and willing to walk. The upper end of the river continues to produce steady action for salmon with a few trout mixed in. Anglers have reported catching fish in both of the fly fishing only areas, Altmar, Schoolhouse Pool and Ellis Cove. In the lower end the Douglaston Salmon Run reported another good day with most of the salmon action in the mid DSR and steelhead action throughout the run. SUGGESTED PATTERNS: Flesh Fly, Glo bugs in chart, orange, blue and oregon cheese. Steelhead Hammer in black, olive or red, Estaz eggs in chart, pink, orange or blue. Salmon River Flea in pink, chart, orange, Black or olive woolly buggers, Egg sucking leeches in black with an orange, pink or red head.
