THE NEW CHANGES TO THE LOWER FLY FISHING ZONE. Over the summer some improvements were made to the river in the lower fly fishing area in order to help with the flow of water down the main stem. The main pool above the Altmar bridge was getting a significant amount of water flowing down the north channel. Over the years the water flow in the north channel continued to increase which meant less flow was going down the main stem and affecting the area of river where Beaverdam Brook, which is the tributary to the NYS Fish Hatchery, enters the main stem of the Salmon River. Large rocks were put in place in order to help redirect more water down the main stem. Please be aware of these changes and please note that more water is now running thru the Church Pool side of the river. So be extra careful when wading along or crossing the river in this area when it reopens on Sept. 15th.

PUBLIC NOTICE: BROOKFIELD POWER TO PERFORM WORK ON BENNETTS BRIDGE DAM/Notice of change in operation During Summer/Fall2006 Salmon river Hydroelectric Project(FERC No.11408). OSWEGO COUNTY, NEW YORK. Brookfield Power will be performing work on the Bennetts Bridge Dam on the Salmon River Reservoir starting in August 2006. The dam rehabilitation will require a variance from Brookfield Power's normal reservoir management target elevations. The Salmon River Reservoir will be managed from August 7, 2006 thru November 7, 2006 to maintain an elevation of 927 feet (1-5 feet below normal elevations). Additional flows were released from July 1, 2006 thru August 6, 2006 in an effort to reach the desired elevation of 927 feet by August 7,2006. Brookfield Power, in consultation with appropriate resource agencies, has determined the best water management practices for accomplishing dam safety related activities while managing environmental and recreational interests. DOWNSTREAM USERS: Compared to an average year, downstream users may experience normal to above normal flows during the mid-summer season(especially the month of July and early August)as the reservoir is lowered to the construction elevation of 927 feet and then generally average flows with flow fluctuations during the late summer and fall seasons as the reservoir is maintained at elevation 927 feet and hydroelectric operation match mother nature. Upon project completion ( November 7, 2006), expect flows to match the base flow requirements until the reservoir can be returned to its normal seasonal targeted operating elevation. WHITEWATER USERS: June, July and August were as scheduled. The scheduled LABOR DAY whitewater release will be contingent on reservoir inflows during the LABOR DAY WEEKEND. If there are any questions, please call Brookfield Power's Liverpool Office at 1-315-413-2700. The PUBLIC is advised to continue monitoring Waterline at 1-800-452-1742(site code 365123) or Waterline for river flow conditions

AKS,

Thanks for the info, I consider myself to be pretty much tuned in to what's going on on the SR, but I wasn't aware of the change to the LFZ

8 Aug 06 Report Kings are In

It's official, a fisherman just caught a King Salmon out back behind our shop around 4:30 this afternoon so the answer to your question, "Are their Kings in the river?", is a yes!

Report 18.8.06

from the Yankee Fly Shop, Pulaski, NY

Aug. 19, 2006 Reports

Fishing Report for 8-19:
241cfs at Pineville. The water temp is about 72 degrees. 185 cfs until 8-25. Well it's like I said, every year on our anniversary (today...6 yrs!) there's always Kings in the Salmon River. At 10:30 am I was down at the DSR and Connie said a King already hit the parking lot. Was in the 20 lb. class range. How many are in the river? No one really knows however they are there and will continue to come in depending on Mother Nature. Keep in mind a good wind, rain, higher water levels, and cooler temperatures will make more come in.
Yankee Fly & Tackle Shop.

DSR reported a dozen kings observed, only one landed.

Fishing Report 8-23-06

Lads, I have been slow in my duties.

Fishing Report for 8-23: Yankee Fly Shop.
The water level is still low and about 72. Friday Aug. 18th Zana, the daughter of Brant Gervaise, owner of Salmon River Sports Shop across the street from us, caught a 40", 31 lb. make King Salmon behind their shop. Brant has it in the freezer and said I could take a picture of it later so when I do I'll post it. I just found this out. He plans on getting it mounted as it's his daughter's first King. That's a nice size King and the first one caught on the Salmon River this year. Another King was caught in the Staircase yesterday. Eric from PA caught about 12 small skamania steelhead behind our shop yesterday. The biggest was about 3 lbs. He aslo caught a 6 lb. male brown mid river. Keep in mind a good wind, rain, higher water levels, and cooler temperatures will make more Chinook Salmon come in. It's official, Salmon Season is here and we can't wait (they can't wait!!!! Well I know a few other too) to see all of you again.

Fishing Report for 8-25-06:
The water level is still low and about 72. Guide Mike was out yesterday at the DSR and only saw one King. Said he was pretty spooked. Someone had a King on at the Ballfield this morning. The Brookfield Power Co. will continue to release 185 cfs (base flow) until further notice. Meaning, Labor Day Weekend will not be 750 cfs as in past years. The only way it would be this year is if we get rain. So, it's all up to Mother Nature at this point. Let's hope for some rain folks to bring more fish in. Please keep posted. This is the "low down". Your source for honest, no B.S. reports.

Fishing Report for 8-26-06

The water level is still low and about 72. Guide Mike was out today again at the DSR and only saw a few Kings. He saw more in the estuary today than yesterday. John saw a King roll out back at 9:30 am and Alex a customer, hooked a King around 2 pm. The Brookfield Power Co. will continue to release 185 cfs (base flow) until further notice. Meaning, Labor Day Weekend will not be 750 cfs as in past years. The only way it would be this year is if we get rain. So, it's all up to Mother Nature at this point. Was out myself 8/25. saw 8-10 kings moving up through Douglaston. Hooked none. Water is low and warm, Was talking to some of the douglaston keepers and they thought the kings would nose up to the first flow and turn around. That seemed to be what I witnessed below the meadow as well.

Askim,
Keep up the good posts on the river. I would wait for higher water flow as well. You will get some fish trickle in here and there but thats about it for now. Also, with 185cfs the fish get chased around alot easier making it more difficult to fish for them. Heading up to Alaska next tuesday for Silvers, will post pics when I get back on the 14th of Sept. Good luck up there and keep up the reporting. I will be doing the same this fall in that I plan on being up there quite a bit. No more wife to deal with. Good Fishing

Fishing Report for 8-28-06 Yankee Fly Shop
The water level is still low and about 68. Saw a couple in the mouth but no action for us folks.

As TKHOUR stated, need an increase flow to draw the salmon into the river.

Just have to wait lads.

The water level is still low and about 68. No luck ... no clients didn't catch any salmon. They saw 2 blow by them upstream and then they turned around and blew back downstream. It's all up to Mother Nature to give us some more rain. This will bring the salmon in. .. keep posted. This is the "low down". Your source for honest, no B.S. reports.

To all of those who died at the WTC, Pentagon, & Flight 93, we have not forgotten and are thinking of you today. Got a call this morning at 8:00 am from the DSR and Connie said that there are pods of Kings & Cohos coming in at 25-30 at a time and so there you have it...the "motherload" is coming NOW!!! I was looking out my window and saw a 1/2 dozen surfacing in the "Town Pool". So, you've been waiting and the time has come. The salmon are running!!! There's no one around so get your butts up here and do some Salmon River fishing!!! Please keep posted. This is the "low down". Your source for honest, no B.S. reports.

An excellent day at the Douglaston Salmon Run with a large run of Cohos, Kings, Steelhead and Browns. It was the first big push of the season, the fishing pressure was lite and most of the action was from the Joss Hole down. Several anglers we spoke with who fished at the DSR reported an outstanding day with pink and purple being the hot color.

Fishing Report for 9-12-06:

Eric Geary, an avid Salmon River NY fisherman caught a 17 lb. skamania steelhead in "public water on the Salmon River". He chose to have his trophy mounted so he brought it to us and we will be having Rome Taxidermy, the best in the business, do the mount. Eric said he also caught some nice Cohos & Kings. Another shop customer of ours caught a 12 pound skamania steelhead. More reports were that there were 2 nice 21 pound Cohos cleaned at a nearby fish cleaning station. There's really hardly anyone around Pulaski NY, probably since it's during the weekday, however the fishing is pretty good. Please remember to scroll down to see stories and also check in our photo gallery. Pictures are uploaded on a daily basis and at anytime throughout the day/evening so keep posted! Below you can call the DSR Shack for more up-to-the-minute reports. There's no one around so get your butts up here and do some Salmon River fishing!!! Please keep posted. This is the "low down". After seeing the pictures RickW posted tonight.. Oh yeah.... GAME ON!

Yankee Fly Shop Fishing Report for 9-13-06
We're getting some rain here and not a lot of people have come in the shop this morning. I've seen about a half dozen people fishing the Stair Case and a few behind our shop. Just called the DSR and they said that more Kings & Cohos are pushing through today. So, it looks as though it's picking up on the run but not many people are in town. There may be this weekend. Guide Mike's clients hooked up this morning but the salmon were so fierce that they couldn't land any. Below you can call the DSR Shack for more up-to-the-minute reports. There's no one around so get your butts up here and do some Salmon River fishing!!! Please keep posted. This is the "low down". Your source for honest, no B.S. reports.

Fishing Report for 9-16:

So many reports...some great, some good, some bad. It all depends on who you talk to and this is what I try to explain when people ask me whether or not they should come and fish. I say, "it all depends on what kind of fisherman you are and what you consider to be worth while." Our reports show that some fishermen are catching fish. Just look at the stories below. This is the "low down". Your source for honest, no B.S. reports.

Lads, this is the last time I shall post Salmon River reports using this fly shop. It reminds me of reading a Shannon's report of the KLG.

The Coho's got very hot mid week and they all left the river shortly there after.
Spoke to so many disapointed fisherman over the weekend, the only bright spot of the past three days I had a very talented knowledgeable fly fishing partner.

Keep the faith, the boat people say they are just hanging outside of the river awaiting... I guess for everyone to go back home before the decide to run again.

If anyone went up there after reading these reports I posted, you have my sincerest apolgy and regrets. I also went up there Thursday afternoon and returned late this afternoon with only good stories of the people I encounted in the parking lots, on the river banks and in the river. So there is always some good in everything. This trip the fishing was off, but it was the people that made it well worth the trip up there enjoyable.

As always, looking for those Coho's... in all the wrong spots...

AKS

AKS,

You've heard it too many times, but that's why it's called fishing and not catching.

Try hitting a LLS run on a Finger Lake. You might have 2 or 3 days to hit the run.

Jeff:

You are right...

I just returned from Alaska a week ago tonight, and there I was getting a bit tired of the catch...

I knew it was good then and didn't take it for granted, however, a hit this weekend in Pulaski would have been nice....

Got to practice casting a lot... on a sad note... I broke my spey rod.... No pitty required.. now I have the excuse for getting another.... (hahaha).

As always.... standing waist deep in water and can't find a Coho (or steelhead, king, brownie...)

AK Skim

I fished two days last week, I was blessed with a great coho blitz on Tuesday, and skunked on Thursday.

That's just the way it goes.

RickW:

Go right ahead and just POUR THE SALT in that open wound....

As I commented this very morning while standing in the stream at a location commonly referred to as the wire hole, I conjured up photos of a gent holding a freshly caught fish.. I began to wonder, was that picture taken in 1988? or was it this very week past as he claimed???

Oh well...

As always.......

You question my integrity sir? A 1988 photo would show me a number of pounds lighter and with many fewer gray hairs

New Fly Shop Report

Here is your Salmon River report, brought to you by Salmon River Sports Shop, for < Sunday, Sept.,17, 2006. < ****** Attention***The water will be at 335 cfs until further notice.--- Today, the town pool started out slow but by noon it was really good. The cohos held up in the pool all day thanks to the sun. They did really well out back in the fast water from 6pm til dark as the cohos were on the move by dusk.I didn't hear of any other good reports upstream today.I heard dsr was good today. I am anxious to see what happens tommorow and Tuesday, as I think the kings might come now.Past experience tells me that Fridays high water bump makes for new fish Monday and Tuesday. We will see.The Salmon are still stacked up in the estuary, and in the mouth of the Salmon River. They can be caught from a boat using plugs or large floating egg sacs with a bobber.Just keep calling our "SALMONHOTLINE" at Salmon River Sports Shop (315)- 298-4343 or watch our web site as I will update it daily for the most accurate and up to date info on the Salmon River. The Weather and water levels are always important and both are obtainable from links on this site. Thank you. SRSS

A CHANGE OF PACE FROM THE WHOLE FUDR THREADS... FISHING!

Sunrise- Sunset- for TOMMOROW--Rise-6:48 -set-7:08 - Here is your Salmon River report, brought to you by Salmon River Sports Shop, for < Monday, Sept.,18, 2006. < ****** Attention***The water will be at 335 cfs until further notice.--- Today,no rerports of fish up stream from Pulaski. The town pool was slow all day, however,I watched my friend hook at least 20 fish in the fast water behind the shop first thing this morning until about noon.Over half of those fish were big kings. Reports from Douglaston this morning were slow according to fishermen I talked to in the shop, but it must have picked up this afternoon as the DSR recording reports good numbers of king and cohos caught. Hopefully they'll make it to town by tomorrow we'll see. Unfortunately,I didn't get any reports from fishermen who were fishing below town today,e.i.staircase, black hole,As most of the guys went home this weekend. When I heard that the water would get bumpped back up to 335 on friday night,I had a hunch that a fair run of kings and cohos would come through for Monday and Tuesday. I will try to find out tommorow. The Salmon are still stacked up in the estuary, and in the mouth of the Salmon River. They can be caught from a boat using plugs or large floating egg sacs with a bobber.Just keep calling our "SALMONHOTLINE" at Salmon River Sports Shop (315)- 298-4343

****** Attention***

The water will be at 335 cfs until further notice.--

***Wednesday morning Special edition***
It has been really pooring cold rain all morning. The gates are still at 335,but its puffed up and a little off color from the rain. I haven't had any reports from below town yet but I will bet this will move fish out of the estuary. Don't bank on it yet, but definately stay in touch.

SRSS--- Fishing on the Salmon River has been slow. There were reports of some fish in the Black hole, and some in the DSR in the late afternoon before dark. The fish are still not moving up yet in any good numbers. It rained this morning and stopped aroud noon. It really cooled off this afternoon. The Salmon are still stacked up in the estuary, and in the mouth of the Salmon River. They can be caught from a boat using plugs or large floating egg sacs with a bobber.
