Salmon River Report 2011

Well i fished today water was moving at a good pace did manage to hook up one brute on a pink bunny leech but 3 jumps and in the rapids he went and the rest is history :crap:Looks like im going to get rid of my loomis hat because every time i wear it i have trouble catching fish . I have to wait till friday to fish again got a list a mile long of stuff that need to be done around home , Well it raining out again so good night folks and keep dry .

Well since Dennis having the time of ihs life down in the GSMNP I will take over his SR duties for a bit...Unfortunately, I am not as computer savvy as him as I am unable to provide a screen shot of the PINEVILLE Gauge....

Well boys, water is soaring over 4,000k right now as they got POUNDEDDDD with rain last night...brookfield is FULL, so they boys has to open the floodgates...Lets hope 4200cfs for 24hours lowers it enough for them to crank it down again tonight...impossible for us bank anglers to fish right now...2,500 is PUSHING it for fishing as well..Would LOVEEEE to see 1250 again, but I highly doubt it...Check back around dinner time. ILl have an updated report....

***WHITAKERS***
Please check the waterline for the latest update, with the recent rain the water has gone back up. With significant runoff the lower end of the river is running very high. On Wednesday we had plenty of sunshine and the temperature reached into the upper 70's. During the night we had thunderstorms and heavy rain showers, with the rain and runoff the water level has changed again. Yesterday anglers who fished with drift boats reported getting into drop backs in the mid to upper section of river. Bank anglers reported getting into fish in the Upper Fly Fishing Area and side channels off the main river.

Current Conditions

April 28th. 8:36 a.m-Our luck ran out last night and we were hit with substantial rain again. The river is back up over 4000cfs and has quite a bit of color on the lower end. If you are planning on coming please keep a close eye on water conditions.

NOTE: This coming Saturday will be the last day we are open to the public for the season. We will stay open for season pass holders only from Sunday to the following Sunday.

******************************

Hatchery is releasing its fish this Friday boys!!!!! lets hope the water comes down!!!!!

Well gentlemen, I got really excited last night around 11pm when the river QUICKLY dropped to 2600, as I thought brookfield was trying to sneak a fast one by us...Unfortunately, the drop was followed by another bubble...:( WAY up now...

However, diversion, eddies and slack seams are the words of the day!!! However, SAFTEY is priority!!! THe river is a ragging torrent and will sweap away the most seasoned angler...Treat the river like its your first time there....Stay safe and tight lines all!!!!

With the hatchery releasing tis remaining fish today, they will surely be spread out nicely!!!! See you on the water!!!

Huh?

Who's whining?

Negative, I've had more than my fair share of days on the SR this season. I'm going to be working on some landscaping, planting trees & indulging myself with a few Saranac IPA's & some nicotine. When I'm settled from doing that, I think it's time to hit the vise to start tying up some dries. If I'm really motivated, I've been putting off a Sage Xi2 8wt build...........nah, I doubt I'll start that. Good luck, they like 'em big & green this time of year. Hang up the indicator rig this trip and swing 'em

DSR FOR May We are now closed to the public for the summer.

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report for Tuesday, May 3rd

The water level is still high but it's fishable and most of the anglers we spoke with reported getting into fish. On Monday we had scattered rain showers and the temperature reached near 60 degrees. Most of the dropbacks are being caught in the head or tailouts of the larger pools and we still have fish holding in the gravel areas of the river. Anglers have been getting into dropbacks in the Upper and Lower Fly Fishing Area, Schoolhouse Pool, Frazier's Run, Ellis Cove, Trestle Pool, Pineville, Sportsman Pool, Compactor, Papermill, Town Pool, Black Hole and the DSR which is now closed.

DEC creel surveys show Salmon River steelhead fishing is quite impressive lately

The following is a press release from the Oswego tourism department, written by Outdoors Writer Spider Rybaak.

Lake Ontario ranks as the most productive salmonid fishery in the Lower 48 States. In fact, the world record coho salmon, a species native to the Pacific Ocean, was caught in the Salmon River near the village of Pulaski.

And right when the fishing seemed about as good as it gets in Oswego County, creel surveys conducted last fall by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation show a dramatic increase in steelhead numbers.

In its “2010 Salmon River Creel Survey” report, DEC provides graphs comparing creel survey results taken in 2005, 2006 and 2010. Last year, from Sept. 7 through the fourth week of November, anglers reported catching 32,146 steelies, compared to only 7,738 taken in the same period in 2005 and 9,509 in 2006.

If you do the math, you‘ll see more “chromers” were taken in the fall of 2010 than were taken from September through May, in 2005 and 2006 combined.

The rainbow trout’s anadromous form (living most of its life in the sea and returning to natal rivers to spawn), the steelhead is streamlined, colorful and extremely powerful. Famed for its incredible stamina and leaping abilities when hooked, it boasts top honors in the imaginations of the world’s salmonid anglers.

Its most endearing quality is its human-like inclination for taking risks. Courageous to the point of carelessness, each fall and winter it ascends streams ranging in size from brooks to major rivers like the Oswego and Salmon in search of its favorite food, salmon caviar. In the spring, it runs the same streams to spawn.

In the process, it offers anglers roughly eight months of opportunities for close and personal encounters with trophies the size of the ones swimming through their dreams.
The reason given for the huge increase in steelhead depends on who you talk to. Some think that current economic conditions lead to more people fishing, and the more anglers you have out there, the more fish are going to be caught.

Others attribute the greater numbers of steelhead to the explosion in the population of round gobies and other exotic forage. The way they see it, the more gobies and zooplankton there are for predators like cormorants, mink, catfish and game fish to prey on, the more alewives and other minnows there are for trout.

DEC aquatic biologist Scott Prindle, one of the survey authors, says “…indications were that there were LOTS [his emphasis] of steelhead around compared to the recent past.”
Prindle just finished working the steelhead egg take at the Salmon River Hatchery in Altmar, where there were “abundant fish stacked up in Beaverbrook Dam trying to get into the hatchery.”

Samples taken at the Salmon River Hatchery this spring indicate that the fish are somewhat smaller in size, but, Prindle added, “we will have to wait until the scale aging is completed to see if the steelhead are actually smaller, or if the population is weighted heavily towards younger fish.”

No matter how you cut it, one thing’s for certain -- greater numbers of steelhead, even small ones, indicate a promising future -- for the steelies, the anglers with trophies on the brain, and the communities along the Salmon and Oswego Rivers.

Well it look the drop backs are heading back to the lake in a hurry. I fished the lower fly and saw a bunch a fish , they were not interested in anythingyou swung past them :( I also fish towards the ballpark with only one fish on there was driftboat there also and he hooked up nothing . There was myself and one other freind who is a flyfishing guide on the river there and he only got one fish .Hopefully better luck thursday.

Artie,

Dont blame your bad luck/poor fishing skilles on the fact there are no droppies left hahaha....Fishing will be good until mid may...There are still thousands of steelhead in the fly zones from when they released them from hatchery..Once they realize they have no more eggs, they willstart to drop...

And there is no such thing as a steelie NOT taking anything this time of year, unless of course she was already sore lipped...

Was that before or after I used your rod with a PINK LEECH and proceeded to landed nice steel? Please, refresh my memory... :)
