Salmon River Report 2011

I second the River House, Riverside, or whatever it's called. It's located where the log cabin restaurant burned down, right by the Short Bridge in Pulaski. The food is excellent, there's a good variety, it's reasonably priced, and the service was great. There's even a senior section on their menu! Stefano's has good Italian food but it's always mobbed and there's a wait to get a table. Their business is so good they're opening a second restaurant in Mexico, NY.

Dam release remains at 335 cfs

Height of 5.90 ft

Pineville gage reading 449 cfs

Sun rise @ 0704, set 1636

Water temp 43 degrees

Whitaker's Fly Shop Report for Monday, November 21st
Sunday was another mild day with cloudy conditions and the temperature reached into the upper 50's. With the mild weather and low water it's no surprise we had heavy fishing pressure over the weekend.

We got mixed reports from anglers over the weekend, some groups had a tough time, while others did well, but worked hard for the fish they got.

The upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville continues to get the most fishing pressure.

The mid to lower section of river would be a good choice if your willing to walk and trying to avoid other anglers.

Even with the low water conditions anglers are getting into fresh chrome in the lower end of the river on a daily basis.

The riffles, pocket water and inside seams continue to produce the most action on a daily basis.

Anglers stopping into the shop reported getting into fish in the DSR, Staircase/Longbridge, Papermill, Sportsman, Pineville, Refrigerator, Lower Trestle, Wire Hole, Upper and Lower Fly Fishing Area.

For those anglers who are fly fishing, dead drifting egg patterns along the bottom or under a strike indicator has been very productive throughout the river. For those anglers who are float fishing, trout beads and egg sacs have been the top producers.

SUGGESTED PATTERNS:
  • Estaz eggs in pink, chart, white and blue, size 10.
  • Sucker Spawn in pink, oregon cheese, chart, blue, orange, size 8.
  • Egg sucking leeches in black w/red head or purple w/pink head, size 6.
  • Woolly buggers in black, olive peacock and brown, size 8.
  • Glo-bugs in pink, chart, orange, blue and oregon cheese, size 10.
  • Steelhead hammer in chart, pink, red or black in size 10.
  • Wiggle stone nymph in blue, pink, chart and peacock in size 10.
  • Steelhead stone in orange and red in size 8.

We are getting down to the final few days of this thread.

Like to thank everyone who contributed and looked in over the past 8 months.

Next week the final report.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

You wait all year for the season to begin, come July you get impatient, August you feel the need to go up there even if there is nothing happening.

September - October - November pass so quickly .............

Thanksgiving and for me at least the season has come to an end.

Last look at the O.S.U. Lodge

I-81 south bound ...

100 days and counting till I head north on I-81 once again.

Re: Salmon River Report 2011 - Where am I ?

Please check the waterline for the latest update. Record high temperatures are expected for Wednesday along with mild weather for the remainder of the week. This will give anglers the opportunity to take advantage of some spring like conditions. Monday morning was cold and windy along with scattered lake effect snow showers, no major accumulation but enough to cover the ground. The lower end of the river had slush ice early in the morning, but in the afternoon the sun came out and the temperature reached into the 30's. We did not speak with many anglers, but anglers staying in the motel reported getting into fish in the upper end of the river in the morning.

SUGGESTED PATTERNS:
  • Estaz eggs in pink, chart, white and blue, size 10.
  • Sucker Spawn in pink, oregon cheese, chart, blue, orange, size 8.
  • Black Hare's ear nymph in size 10.
  • Prince nymph in size 10.
  • Glo-bugs in pink, chart, orange, blue and oregon cheese, size 10.
  • Steelhead hammer in blue, chart, pink, red or black in size 10.
  • Wiggle stone nymph in blue, pink, chart and peacock in size 10.
  • Steelhead stone in orange and red in size 8.
  • Beadhead stonefly in brown or black, size 10.
  • Montana stone in size 10.
UPCOMING EVENTS:

  • Just a reminder that the Upper Fly Fishing Area is now closed and will reopen on April 1st. The Lower Fly Fishing Area located on the upstream side of the Altmar bridge is currently open.
