Sage 99 line

LyNcH

Dries, wets, nymphs and streamers...it's all good!
I just picked up a Sage 99 5 weight rod for a decent price & should have it by this weekend. I'm trying to figure out what line to put on it and hope that my Sage 230 grain indicator line works well on it since it was designed for their 5 wt switch rod.

Does anyone own one of these yet? What lines have you tried. This rod will be solely used for indicator nymphing with dropper rigs, for which it was designed. I already have the dry scene covered with a Beulah 9' 5wt and the swing with a Sage Z 11' 5wt switch.

Thanks.

I just built one. I'll be fishing it this weekend. I lined it with a Rio Indicator line. I also did the 5 wt. The only thing I did different is I used Recoil guides.

How do you like the 5wt switch rod. I have the 6 and 7 Z Axis switch and was looking to build a 5. Do you fish it on the small NJ rivers. I got them for the Delaware and the Salmon Rivers.

Please let me know how you like the line on it. I called Sage today and they said the 230grain is too much for the rod and should consider their new nymph line, which has a longer head than Rio's nymph line, according to sage (I think Rio makes their lines now anyways). I can find no information on this line and Rio doesn't appear to make their nymph line anymore, but has their new indicator line. So it looks like i have to decide between the rio and the sage.

I can't comment on how I like the 5110 yet, because I am still building it & am just about to start the guide work. I will be using it to primarily swing with a 275 grain Rio Skagit short with 10' poly leaders, but do have the indicator line and an Orvis powertaper 6.5 if I want to do a dry/dropper setup with it (this line worked well on my Beulah 4/5 switch i had).

I built the 7110 and used it a few times on the Salmon this winter and like it so I am sure the 5 weight will be awesome. The 7110 takes seat number 4 behind my 2 Sage spey rods and Beulah switch rod..........so I'm most likely going to sell it soon.

If a 5wt Line doesnt work out for you uou could try a 6wt -- Most rods can go up 1 weight for easier loading and casting

Peace

Well I ended up picking the New Rio Indicator line in 5wt up for $35 new from someone on another fly fishing forum. I plan on getting out on 5/8 tyo give it a try. I'll report back.

Funny question - why does Far Bank have three companies that all make fly line? They should just stick with Rio in my opinion.

I fished the Rio Indicator on my 99 and I think it awesome. It roll casts great and really shoots line out. It's nice to keep line off the water. It's tough to carry in tight woods so I split it in half to walk out. I would definetly say get one.
