Running a Website

I never thought this site would grow to over 500 (491) registered users when I slapped it up a few years ago. When I initially put the site up, it was a horror show rather than an informational portal for fly fishermen. People from another site would critisize my efforts and tell me how worthless this site was. I guess I couldn't really argue with them (but I did). The site was pretty ugly and the content was blah. Today on the other hand, well I suppose this sort of site isn't for everybody, but only a select few who choose to use it for what it's worth. Good for you, I'm glad you've found a place online in which you can come and share your idea's or maybe gather a few from others. For me, this site offers something a little different.

What makes me happy about running this site other than meeting new people, is when someone attempts to contact me because a friend told them about a photo they saw on the site which contained him/her within the photo, with another friend (did you get that ok?). Ok, big deal... But then there's a story about the people in the photo and you were there to capture the moment.

The other day I had the opportunity to fish with 3 great people I met online. Andre... The first time I met Andre was in the Beaverkill Angler. He referred to me as, "The guy everyone loved to hate." but then followed up with, 'You wanna get a room?' :) Pretty funny, but we fished that day then shared a room at the Riverside (Seperate beds, just in case you needed to know.:)) He didn't try to get fresh with me either. True gentleman! Then Tryg / MNTrout. I picked tryg up one morning, he lives not too far from me. I warned him about my driving, but he said he wouldn't mind driving up with me that day. Well, he never mentioned anything about the ride, but I think I had his heart pumping pretty good. I wouldn't be surprised if he was checked for hight blood pressure either. :) And finally within this bunch, we've got DTW aka HydeLowRyder... Quite a character with a warped sense of humour and an alter ego to boot. Yeah, I'll save that one for another day. Dennis is always looking to row me down the stream and will never hand the controls over to me. He's like a personal Jeeves who's job is to see you catch the most fish possible in 1 day. I just wish you were with BJ Miller and I when the river opened up and the water was boiling with rising trout. Wow.... time to fish, Dennis. Of course I can't leave out Bruce. Bruce asked me to float with him a few times last year, but there was always some type of conflicting schedule. We finally set sail this year on the 'Brucester'. That's the name I'll give his ship for now. It turned out that I had my best fishing day ever. The fishing was incredible; better than I've ever seen it. I met up with Fly Tyer about 3 weeks ago (possibly a month) for the first time, and he went out of his way to find a pontoon boat for me. This is a guy I've never met before who did this. Some of you guys are incredible.

Andre mentioned the other day that he's never met a guy who he wouldn't fish with again. I think I'm on that same ship. Everyone I've met turned out to be great people.

I never realized that Mayflies have eyelids until the Macro-Photography shots I've taken. Yeah, I've still got a lot to learn, but I find myself a bit disabled when it comes to learning. I have an extremely short attention span. Some may say, "who the hell cares if Mayflies have eyelids." Maybe you're right, but you probably just learned something new.

Anyway, another thing that I get a kick out of is new material. For an example... The NEFF Magazine cover! I had a great time making that thing. So great that it actually gave me an idea today. I checked my voice mail on my way home and apparently, one of my fishing pals also thought of a similar idea. Damn Andre, you fit perfect on that cover, like Catskill said, you look like you belong there. Maybe down the line, a few of us can work as a team to start something up. I think it would be a great place for unbiased information regarding the rivers we fish.

You tend to learn quite a bit about people running a site like this. Not necessarily people as individuals, but online personalities vs. in person personalities. Ohhh, completely different. How many of you thought I was a real dork before you met me... Turns out I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread, right? hello? Anyone still here? helllooooooo? Yeah... Yeah... yeah... you can come back now, I'm done. You get the picture! :)

So much engery filled with knowledge flows through here on a daily basis. I actually feel as if I've learned much more than I've ever needed to know.

Different people from different walks of life holding different opinions stroll on through every day. Some to post what's new while others to see what's new. Fly fishermen from all over the world come here, even if only once, just to see what's happening on the other side of the planet. Seeing folks from Figi <sp> drop on by is always pretty kewl. Now if someone from Figi would drop by, that would be pretty kewl.... Ok, I've seen people from Japan, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, London, and the list goes on. We even have our house foreigner on here. He is Chris Chin. You're thinking China, aren't you. Well, Chris is from Canada! A quick funny story. I used to work with this guy Richard Chin who just happens to be a black Jamaican. I also worked with an Asian guy named, Kenny Cheung. The 3 of us sat pretty close to each other. People would come to visit Rich and walk to Kenny's desk and ask if he was Rich? Kenny would always reply with, "If I were 'Rich', I wouldn't be sitting here talking with you."

Well, I'd like to keep writing, but it's now 2am and I've gotta get some sleep. I have to wake up early tomorrow, I've got a site to moderate thanks to you. :)

Dennis Great post, great site. Not for nothing but I see Tryg hasen't driven with you again. Back in the day when you were Caddis you were a bit more confrontational(thus the people love to hate line) but have mellowed in the past couple of years. I want to hear about the altar ego of HLR some day. "You can't please all the people all the time", but you've done a damn good job of pleasing most. BTW, My deeply shallow narcissitc side says your right I do belong on that cover. Jane sent all herfamily(big) copies of it. Keep up the good work and I am proud to be associated with this site, even if a few people get pissed off that I am.

Dennis,
I went to a TU meeting where the editor of American Fly Tier gave a presentation on his magazine. I believe his name was Phil Monahan. Pretty nice guy. They are always looking for articles and photos for their magazines. In fact he said a lot of the photos displayed with a story are not the same place as the story. With the work like you did on the picture of Andre and your photos of mayflies you might want to look him up. In fact I think a lot of his photos come from your friend Ted.

DC,

That's a kicker ...; Ya' see, I DO have a brother Richard Chin (He's over at Sun MicroSystems and was at Lucent). More ... my parents ARE from Jamaica.

Small world eh ??

Great job too.

Didn't I hear somewhere there are only five degrees of separation for everyone in the world, right? This connection was two and in both directions....... Pretty cool. OMC

That's pretty funny, Chris. I got the scoop from my pal a while ago with regards to this Asian ancestry. I don't quite recall the details, but hey... maybe you have another brother named Rich. :)

OMC - Not sure if it's 5 or 6, but you're right, it is a small world!

I'm glad Willowhead turned me on to this site Dennis, your doing a GREAT job. And this is coming from someone who could give a rat's ass about computers and such. I'd rather be tying or flyfishing but this site keeps me coming back again and again. Keep up the good work and someday Youll probably meet me on the stream. Just look for the Green Bay Packer hat and that will probably be me. John Collins:D :D

I normally fish Pohatcon Creek, which is my home waters since I live in Stewartsville N.J. but I fish the lower Musky from Changewater to the Delaware, the Pequest, the Paulinskill around Blairstown, the S. Branch but not usually The Gorge, rather I'll fish upstream from Califon. In P.A. I fish The Bushkill in Easton and above to Bangor, the other Bushkill at Resica Falls, Martins Creek, the Little Lehigh, Kettle Creek (when I get the chance to), Dyberry Creek etc. When I'm upstate N.Y., I'll be found fishing the E. Branch usally from Shinnhopple down because that's where my mentor lives, The Willow, the West Branch in the "nokill" area but not usually the BK, because theres too many people fishing there. As far as Jersey goes, where I live puts me within 15 mins. to a half an hour from alot of good fishing areas and great Smallmouth fishing in The Delaware, usually at Foul Rift below Bellvidere. But like I said in my other post, I'll be the one wearing a Green Bay Packer (my signature) hat with a Catskill Fly tyers Guild pin in it. Hope to meet you on the water someday Dennis.:D :D John Collins
