So a quick report from Estes Park, Colorado. I'm out here for a family wedding. I've managed to fish (for a while, anyway) the Fall River, Poudre River, and the Big Thompson. Did a guided trip that I was VERY lukewarm about (PM me if you want me to tell you the shop...I don't feel it's necessary to slam 'em online - there are a lot of reasons that were out of there control). I had a great time fishing by myself, however, on all three rivers that I've hit (thus far! - running out of time...)
My highlight was catching fish after fish after fish between 8 and 8.27pm, all on para adams and elk wing caddis, in the Big Thompson. The bugs were really thick (various caddises, I think) and fish seemed to be jumping over my head. I've never experienced this before. Biggest was maybe 16", but largely in the 10-12" range, and all fighters (both browns & rainbows).
The Poudre (Cache la Poudre) is the most beautiful physically, and probably has the toughest fishing. I fished there for a few hours & then went on a rafting trip, which was fun and all, if only I had been able to stop the raft, get out and fish all this good water we flew down.
I haven't been able to catch a greenback cutthroat, the native fish in the Rocky Mt. Nat'l Park. Maybe tomorrow morning - that's my last hurrah before reality intervenes. I'll post a few pics, but it was dark and I was holding the fish & so on.
Now for the family wedding...(cue music).
Best, Ricky
