Fished Ramapo Reservation today 5 PM until 7... Landed four on a prince trailed behind a red San Juan worm... Tons of caddis but no risers. Water up and off color but very fishable.

Anyone know how high the river is running....
Looks like it's back to about normal for this time of year (227 CFS at 7:30 AM)
See:
USGS Real-Time Water Data for USGS 01387500 Ramapo River near Mahwah NJ

Even thought the Mahwah gauge is quite a bit upstream from where I fish, I believe it's a better indicator of river conditions, than the one at the RR bridge in Oakland (where the River gets wider and shallower), or the gauge at the Pompton Dam where there are too many "man made" factors. You just have to realize the actual flow may be a little higher, due to the tributaries.

Fished Big Flatbrook on Tue. and did fine Had 8 trout on and missed 3 that got off. The largest was a 13 " rainbow Then on Wed. fished the Ramapo. Had a ball. Marchbrowns were hatching around 1:00 and the the Grayfox started about 1:30 I looked up stream and no one was in sight even downstream there was zero people. I mfished until 4pm If you fish the Ramapo take some Marchbrowns and some Grayfoxes with you They nwere the only thing hatching It wasn't a Marchbrown here then another one in about 10 min. it was a great hatch of them also the Grayfoxes were all over the place..I'll be going up again on Mon. because I work the weekends From Glen Gray bridge on up to first bend is great water with alot of fish Talk Later, Vance

Fished glen gray upstream from the bridge today from 6 to about 7 30. I may of saw a few march browns but there was not real hatch to speak of. At about 7 15 fish started rising to take emergers right under the surface. I could not figure out what they were after so i stuck with a BHHE and landed my second fish ever on the fly, a 12 inch rainbow. I was surprised at how hard he fought. I think im finally getting the hang of this fly fishing thing now, so much more rewarding than than spinfishing

Good on ya, moose! It is always exciting when you get a good fight out of a fish.

Fished river today from 5pm to 8pm near and around Mink's Pool. Had a few hookups, but no catches per say. River was running extrememyl high and fast from normal conditions and streamers and nymphs were producing some hits. Didn't see any hatch either. Maybe next time I'll try upstream.

Funny you should mention the prince. I hardly ever use it (especially on the Ramapo) but I recently was surprised by its effectiveness on this river. Brought 4 browns and 4 rainbows to the net this past Friday in 45 minutes, all on the same prince, and all within a stretch of 30 yards. No dropper, just a tiny split shot 8 inches from the fly, no indicator, just high sticking it.

Fished the river Monday afternoon by Britts with a lot of risers to small BWO's,
caught 2, lost 2. Tuesday fished again and got ten, browns, brookie and a couple of
rainbows. Caught on green caddis CDC emergers BHPT nymph. One of my best days
on the Ramie!!!!!!!! Going again tonight

I have been fishing the Ramapo after work (5 till 8 or so) three nights a week and have been catching 4 or 5 fish every time. The hatches have been crazy, wish i could get out earlier in the day, seems like there are a lot of spinners around by the time that i get out. Gary, where is britts?

Britts is closed now, used to be decent bait/fishing store. It's right at the Ramapo
on West Oakland Ave. The bridge pool is good and downstream is good. Decent hatches,
was kind of surprised how good they have been.

Lambasted fish last friday above glen gray... Size 10 prince no bead and a lafontaines ESP size 16. Lights out, best day fishing in NJ, thought i was back on the Roaring Fork in Basalt, CO... Thanks to TU for putting in some of those fish, they are of a different caliber than the typical stockies...
