Prefish drive through the skills

Today I took a nice little ride through the catskills, but first...

I normally take the Parkway - Thruway - 17. Today I figured I'd try something a little different, so I punched the location into my navigation system. Driving up the parkway, it barked orders at me to jump onto 280. I skipped those orders and it instantly calculated a new route. Take 46 - 23s. Ok, no problem. 40 minutes later, I'm in Verona (20 minutes from my home). I continued to follow the instructions and found myself on 280 in Roseland. So, 280 - 80 to 15... then to guess what? 23N, what nerve!!!! After about 3hrs of driving, I finally found myself on the thruway 20 miles north of 17. Great directions... For now on, I think I'll stick with what works. I left my house a little before 9am and didn't get to the Roscoe area until 12:30. What is normally a 2hr drive turned into 3 1/2hrs. OUCH! So much for fishing for a few hours, I had some erands to run in the area.

MY First stop was the Finn / Feather something or another fly shop just below Roscoe in Livingston Manor. I had to return my new Korkers for a larger size. They didn't have my size in stock so they'll mail them to me. I hope that guy is honest because I took his word for it and left the original pair that I purchased with him. Their fly selection is a somewhat bleak but I did snoop around a bit and found a few nice ties (and of course purchased them). I'm sure he's just out of stock and waiting for new stuff to arrive. The next stop was Catskill Flies. I didn't spend too long in there but picked up a few little things then made my way over to the Beaverkill Angler. I didn't purchase anything here but did notice that they had a few 'Gallow's Tools" available. I forget the price but it was reasonably cheap. I didn't purchase it because by looking at it I could tell it would not mount onto my Nor-Vise properly. Ohh well, maybe next time (after I purchase a new Vice). My next stop was to some type of fly material swap at the rockland house. I purchased some really nice DST Quills from Allen Podel (Mayfly to some of you). He uses a technique to die the quills in different shades to match whatever specific hatch you're tying for. I picked up 3 packs of these and will post results as soon as I try them.

Now for the important stuff. The Willow and the Beaverkill looked perfect. Fish were rising everywhere, unfortunatly I had to run some errands... ehh... just kidding about the rising trout. :) I'll post some pics of the rivers in a little while.

I then drove into Hancock and noticed Jim Serio in the window. I stopped to say hello and to learn a few things about the DRF organization. Pretty interesting stuff, but I'll let Jim post it if he chooses. I will say that Jim is really sincere about his involvment with the DRF. I hope to get to sit down with someone from the FUDR who is as sincere about the FUDR as Jim is for the DRF.

So far it's been a busy day. I drove over to the West Branch Angler to pick up some flies. I'M A NUT!!! I'd be embarrased to let you all know how much I spent on flies! My main reason for getting to the WBA was to drop off a deposit for Memorial Day weekend. I chose this place because the cabins are big enough for my entire family and, they are really well kept. You feel right at home in them after a good day of fishing, and one more thing, the beds are pretty damned comfortable too, they don't feel like cardboard, but I will say that you do pay for that extra comfort (they give you free breakfast too).

Finally, I drove down to the Hale Eddy bridge to lift a rock and see what was under it. The one rock I picked up had a nice handfull of immature Golden Stone Fly nymphs. That was good enough for me, I'll post the pics later or tomorrow, I'm pretty exhausted now.

All of the rivers looked like they were in excellent shape but who know's, April showers bring May flowers, right! Let's hold off on that one for now. Goodnight!

Ohhh Damit... Through all of that, I forgot to mention something about Chuck (Charles Manson)... As I snapped that shot of him, he was getting ready to leave. So I waited a minute and as he approached me, I asked him, "Hows the fishing?" Guess what his response was! "I don't talk about my fishing." What? "I said, I don't talk about my fishing." Naturally, I had to ask why.. his response, "What? Does this look like a team sport to you?" He gave me a few dirty looks, groaned, and walked away. As rotten as that was, I got the biggest laugh at that. You just had to hear to way the guy spoke... Weird...

LOL, Dennis did you buy anything at the swap today. I did.......got a fly display box for $40. and a couple books for like $5. each. And got a bunch of materials for free. Every year it's the same thing, guys just start giving things away, lol. Also bought a few materials from Allan (Mayfly). A dozen colors of aunt Lydia's sparkle yarn actually. I think that's the original stuff Gary Lafontain used for the sparkle pupa caddis. It also works great as a dubbing either by itself or blended in a coffee grinder with other dubbing materials, either natural or synthetic. Just cut up little half inch pieces and unwide them into single strands, throw 'em in the blender alone or along with whatever you want. Makes a great dubbing blended with squirrel, rabbitt, muskrat, raccoon, fox of any kind, cyote, bader, opposum, main moose cat, seal, anything. Hope more of you make it next year. Dennis thankx for showin' up. mark.......get any pics?

I see that guy there all the time!I have had people tell me he is pretty arrogant also.I pass Cairns a few times a week in my travels, and if it's not frozen over,he's usually there.I don't think I would have been as calm as you Denis,I would have probably blasted him(verbally-at first!),if I was just being friendly and he came back with a response like that.I am glad you found the humor in it,and did not let a clown like that ruin your day up in God's country.
Jim

willow...

Willow, I've been considering building my own display box...can you describe the one you picked up? Anyone know where I might view a pic of something similar?

Dennis,
It's funny how our paths paralleled yesterday, Bruce C. aka Fixer and Aaron H., and myself, all of this list. did Roscoe also. We stopped to pick up a few things at Dennis' and then went up to the swap where I got some quills from Allan. Bruce had some stuff to sell including a nice flyting materials chest so we hung around awhile. We then drove up to Wagontracks and turned around to park at Cairn's. Saw one person standing at the waterline with rod in hand and eventually I got out to speak to him. On the third loud "How ya doin'" he finally turned around and looked at me. He then just turned away. All at a rod's length distance. You sure got it right when you pegged him "Chuck". The spitting image of Charles Manson.

Man that was some trip without wetting a line!!
A nice scenic way up to the Catskills is to stay on rt 23 up thru Port Jervis to rt 97 this follows the Delaware up to Hancock. Or you could shoot across into Roscoe, long trip though.

Dennis, Are you sure that you should be driving around up there like that? I mean, you might be accused of undermining years of effort or something. Whatever you do, don't take any pictures!!!!

Hi Guys,

Pleasure meeting you face-to-face. Let me know how those quills work and especially if they don't.

Mark - LaFontaine says and demonstrates in the video and/or writes in the book that there were 3 yarns he used for caddis pupa. They were all the same except different brands. One was Caron - 'Dazzleaire' but I don't recall the names of the other 2. He cut pieces 1/8 inch long and put in a coffee blender. He used a 50% rabbit and 50% yarn mixture. That was his "touch dubbing".
The Aunt Lydia's may be the same chemistry but is a heavier yarn. Probably can be used for the same purpose though. Go ask a trout if he/she has a preference (-;

Allan

Allan, actually i think he said it was "Sparkle Yarn" which i think is just antron rug yarn. I have the stuff which is actually sold as the Caddis pupa yarn. Isn't Aunt Lydias some type of antron though? Guys,
we used to take I-80 to Rt. 23 all the way to Port Jervis all the time when we would go fishin' on the Mongaup, below Rio Reservoir on out to the mounth where it hits the Big D. It's a nice drive. As you go up Rt. 97 towards Hancock, just cut over at either Callicoon or Hankins to get to Roscoe. Both roads bring you to the bridge over the Willowemoc to Roscoe. And the one from Callicoon comes right past my house.
Un, to bad you didn't make the swap. Some guy had two other display cases about the same as the one i got but both a bit smaller. Think he wanted $35 for the smallest and $55 for the larger of the two he had. The one i got is about two and a half ft. square (app.) and has a hinged and framed out plexiglass (i think) top/lid on it. Inside it has dividers about three inches sq. and deep. Maybe 10 verticle and 10 horizontal. That's about it. It was obviously made for a fly shop. Should hold a couple thousand of flies. Come on over and see it, along with everything else if you like. mark.......
