Population studies

Andre

The Bamboo Guy!
I asked in another thread but maybe no one saw it. Can someone direct me to a trout poulation study re: the W. barnch and upper Mainstem that documents the decrease or increase in the fish pop over lets say the last 20 years. I'm sure one exists but don't remember seeing one. Thanks in advance.

I dont know of any comprehensive study that has been done year after year. Are there some fish counts floating around? yeah I have seen a few but nothing comprehensive. In other words done yearly in various sections of the rivers like they should be done or as they do out west on many of the rivers.

I think they should have been doing studies for years now.Not just with fish pops but with insects as well. Its the only way to guage what has happend no?

I hope there is something out there that I have not seen yet.

Very good question Andre.

Trout POPOULATION

Andre i can only speak from my personal experiences but i have fished the catskills for the last 25 years and at least in the rivers and areas i fish i can tell you that iam catching as many fish today as i was catching 10 years ago if not more . This year the numbers are not low but one thing i can tell you for sure is that size of the fish that i did catch this year are a few inches smaller than normal . I did catch a lot of fish in the 6 " to 12 " range mostly rainbows where as in other years those smaller fish would be far and few between. I would like to know why this occured this year. Lack of food or flooding ?

Bio Mass studies

The NYS DEC did another biomass study last year, and, although I have not seen the report, I believe it shows WB numbers about the same, with EB and Neversink numbers improved. Details like sizes, etc., would be interesting. I thought the DEC was going to post this report....

W.B. Study

If you go up on the PAFBC web site, you will find a study done by the PA Fish & Boat Com. last summer I believe. It was done on the West Branch of the Delaware around the Hancock bridge and I think Balls Eddy.
