Plan to fish KLG, what should I have in my fly box...??

Werloc

Don't Know Nothin Yet
So the wife and I plan to go to KLG sometime next week. I need some advice on what flies (type, color, size, etc.) to use. I do plan to stop at Shannon's while I'm there, but would really like to know what you guys are catching with so I can tie my own flies this weekend. Pictures of the fly would be ideal, since there are so many variations. This way I'll know what exactly to tie. Remember, I'm a newb, so take it easy on me here....LOL

Thanks....:D

Hey Werloc,

A very common yet effective short list of flies for the KLG this weekend could be.

1) Pheasant Tails in sizes 14-16
2) Olive Caddis Larva in sives 12-16
3) RS-2's in olive or brown, sizes 14-18
4) Any thread midge larva in black, brown, sizes 16-20

With fish trying to spawn right now, there are some natural eggs in the water as well. So, egg patterns will always take fish as well.

The internet is plastered with pictures and tutorials of all of these patterns. Do a quick Google image search and you will have many visual references to tie from. Don't get too caught up in fishing the "correct version". Reading water, finding fish and presentation are 1000 times more important when it comes down to connecting with fish.

Hey James, thanks...:)

Yeah, I have been reading posts here on this forum and googling the images. Also YouTubing on how to tie them as well. I stocked up on materials last night for tying.

BTW, my wife and I plan to book a day with you sometime, just not sure when though...;)

Thanks again.

James gives you as good a list as you'll need for this time of year in the Gorge. Just make sure you put the fly in front of the fish's mouth as water temps are fairly cold already. But they might just chase a woolly bugger in the warmer times of the day as well, so don't be shy about dead drifting or even fast stripping a bugger for an aggressive strike.

Nope don't try that....they never, ever hit buggers....:)

So, the wife and I finally fished the Gorge yesterday. After Tuesday night's rain the water was high and muddy. Oh, and windy as hell. We stopped at Shannon's too. Len (was his name I "Think") very nice guy, was there for a while chating. Anyway, with the water conditions we fished zonkers and black buggers. I "finally" caught a trout. Man, what a great day we had. I really didn't expect catching a trout until next Spring. Anyway, my wife was getting hits where she was, and I wasn't where I was down stream a little. After we broke for lunch, we switched spots. I got one hit after an hour. It was starting to get dark, and after every other cast snagging leaves, I told myself, one more cast. Nothing. So not even stripping in the bugger, I was just realing my line in because that was it, I was leaving, BAM, thought I was snagged, off goes my line up stream a little. Yeah, I landed a brown about 14". Great, no camera, and my wife is still down stream 100 yards. I know she had a cel phone camera on her. So needless to say, I'm a very happy camper....:D I haven't looked at the pic yet, kinda dark out and small cel phone pic, but I'll post it soon. Yeah, she was on her way out and I kept the fish in my net in the water. The fish was still strong, and swam off as soon as I let him go.
Poor conditions, poor casting with the wind, caught a fish. First trout on my fly rod. Beginners luck..? YES, but I love the Gorge...:D
Thanks for all the advice guys..;)

If anyone wants #12 & 10 black buggers, I left about a dozon or so in the trees for ya down around the south gate...lol

Yeah, I am. I'm still smiling. I know it was a fluke catch. I was reeling the line in and starting to step back out of the water. New technique maybe? LOL

Well, here it is. Like I said a cel phone pic, in the dark, so I had to lighten it a lot, then added contrast so you could see the picture, so the coloring is off. I'm pissed cuz I left the camera in the truck. I couldn't wait for her to go and get it. Had to get this fish back in the water asap.

Yeah, easy on the fat jokes..:crap:

congrats on the well deserved brown fells good lol the first couple fell like luck but after that you know you have something going on!! post a few of your flies! i find that my camera phone takes a great macro picture

Congrats! My first one came when I was shuffling down stream w/ a PT dangling in the current. I slipped and swung my arms up to regain balance and set the hook on a brookie. That was the begining of the end for me.

Yeah, I do have and carry a good video/pic camera, but had left it in my truck not thinking I would need it. Anyway, yes, I will post some pics of my flies that I tied. I only tye PT's and HE's so far. None are good enough to fish with IMO, but will post them in a new thread tonight. Right now I'm at work. I plan to stock up on materials for wooly buggers Saturday at the show. That's what I caught the brown on along with a "LOT" of luck...LOL I'm not taking credit for that catch, just happy I finally got one...:)

BTW, Thanks for the help and comments....:)
