Pequest Report

Scott

Salmo salar Sebago finatic
Fished the Pequest this evening from about 5:30 - 7:00ish.

I checked water temp at the Pequest Rd bridge upstream of the hatchery - 71 degrees. The water temp well below the TCA was a cool & comfortable 64 degrees.

There was a decent hatch of BWO's - size #20-22. Also a couple of tan caddis buzzing around. Rising fish all over... I caught one respectable brown on a #20 BWO. All other rising fish refused it.

I saw only one mayfly come off that looked like it might be a #14 cahill, but the yellowish-tan color made it look more like a sulphur. I did not get that good of a look at it.

So I tied on a catskill style #14 Sulphur dry and the fish wouldn't leave it alone. All fish landed were fat & healthy looking. I was a long way from any stocking point, so I suspect these fish have been there a while. Nice to see healthy frisky trout after all the heat this summer.

Big fish of the evening was 15". Felt like a monster on the 2wt. :D

Hey Scott,

What was the Crowd like?
There were about 8-9 cars in the TCA parking lot, I assume that is what you're referring to.

Where I was fishing I had the river to myself - just me & the fish.

Scott,

Yup that's what I was refering to!I bet 4 people were by the Spillway and the others were in that "Circus Pool"!!I just don't get it?The TCA is like a Mile or so but everyone wants to fish all over each other.I can understand getting there early and giving it a go but as the day ages why not go and get away from the Crowd!I remember about 5 years ago I walked about 3/4 of a Mile Downstream and worked Upstream and had a unbelievable time! The fish were alot less Selective and very eager to feed.Glad you had a good time.

Yup, I'm with ya. I wasn't even fishing in the TCA. Maybe people think that's the only place there are trout. Thanks to the cold water discharge from the hatchery, the Pequest is a trout wonderland all the way down to he Delaware. The same is true with the Musky. Why don't I mind saying this in a public forum, where literally billions of people can read it if they like?

Here's why: some of the best spots never get fished, because people don't like to walk more than 100 yards in either direction of where they park their cars. That's why I don't mind saying I never fish TCA's, there's too many people and not enough fish.

People get all "het up" if someone discloses a "secret spot", thinking meat fisherfolk will wipe it out, but the fact is that if it takes more than 5 minutes to walk there, the fish are probably safe.

I would like to take this moment to thank all the lazy fisherman for providing me with fantastic fishing opportunities all year around right here in NJ! :D
