Scott
Salmo salar Sebago finatic
Fished the Pequest this evening from about 5:30 - 7:00ish.
I checked water temp at the Pequest Rd bridge upstream of the hatchery - 71 degrees. The water temp well below the TCA was a cool & comfortable 64 degrees.
There was a decent hatch of BWO's - size #20-22. Also a couple of tan caddis buzzing around. Rising fish all over... I caught one respectable brown on a #20 BWO. All other rising fish refused it.
I saw only one mayfly come off that looked like it might be a #14 cahill, but the yellowish-tan color made it look more like a sulphur. I did not get that good of a look at it.
So I tied on a catskill style #14 Sulphur dry and the fish wouldn't leave it alone. All fish landed were fat & healthy looking. I was a long way from any stocking point, so I suspect these fish have been there a while. Nice to see healthy frisky trout after all the heat this summer.
Big fish of the evening was 15". Felt like a monster on the 2wt.
