Recently I have been volunteering with my local TU org helping out the orvis store in Marlton,NJ. I have been working with the staff for just a few hours on selectled Saturdays and Sundays to help out with their Fly Fishing 101 and 201 course. These are free classes to complete beginners that are taught about fly rods, i.e how to put them together. fly line, leader, tippet, flies, knots ect,ect. Finally the 101 class ends with casting instructions as well. The 101 class runs for about 3 to 4 hours where 1/2 of the time is spent on casting. The second part of the course is another day where we take them out to a pond/lake or stream and go over basic and let them try catching a few fish, again 3 to 4 hours long and just fishing and of course correcting any issues we see with there casting. This has been a lot of fun for me so far.
Now yesterday morning we were at a park pond that has bass and sunnies. I had an easy class and had the oppurtunity to fish a bit with the group. I was given an Orvis Access rod to play with. I thought this rod was light and easy to cast and made you feel very comfortable quickly. The rod seemed to have power and is a decent looking rod to boot. This rod is in the $300 range and seemed in my opinion to be worth the money. I have casted quite a few rods in my time, but I have found that when a rod makes you feel relaxed from the get go and you don't even think about it and you concentrate on the fish more than the rod then you have found a good rod for you. This is how I feel about this rod. Seems like Orvis is finally doing things right in my eyes. I can not give more on the rod since I do not own one. I would love to put one to test over a period of time to see how it would hold up. I am going to see if they have rod blanks available and build a rod for me out of it.
