Nor Vise

Trout Hunter
Does anyone own one of these vises? If so what do you think. I watched the guy at the show the other day and it looked pretty good. I already have a renzetti, but I am thinking about adding another vise to my table. I can always hand the renzetti down to my son or keep it for traveling.

Jason,

I own one, and I like it. It's simple to use and very efficient. One thing I highly recommend is to definetely purchase an extra bobbin holder. If you opt out on the vice itself, do yourself a favor and get the bobbin holder, it's well worth the $$$. I don't know how people live without it!

I liked that automatic retractable bobbin the Norvise guy was using. I'd never seen one before.

Yes, super easy to thread the bobbins. With the kit comes a piece you place onto a drill. You place your thread spool on a pencil (I'm not sure what I used), and press the button and watch how fast the thread moves onto the bobbins. It takes about 2 minutes.

If you do purchase the entire set, I would recommend picking up an extra bobbin. I have 3 right now, and they are IMHO the best thing to happen to fly tying.

Wish I could say more about this fine product. It sure is a pleasure to use. I thought for sure that I wouldn't be able to tie such small flies with it being that the jaws don't really like like they could handle a midge type pattern, but believe me, they work great.

I had a chance to play with one at the show. I worked on it for about an hour. I currently use a DynaKing Sidewinder so this was quite a change. The vise locks rotation every 90 degrees. In addition, you can add tention to the free spin mode and it will stay in any position. The hook holding power seems fine from 24 to size 12. I didn't try anything larger for you salt water fans. I felt the jaw operation was a bit clumsy but I got used to it after a short while. You really need the bobbin hanger add-on. If you don't hang the bobbin, the thread tends to shoot back onto the spool. With the hanger, it's handy and saves some time looking for the bobbin on the desk. Not much to add about the dubbing loop situation. If you've seen the demo at the show, that says it all. If you don't tie a bunch of flies that require the rotary spinning feature, it seems to be overkill. I really think that is the real selling point of the vise in the first place and is really wasted on size 22 quill bodies.
