I bought a Nor-Vise today….

I think Im unbuying it tomorrow.

It's a really really cool vise and does some amazing things but I just don't think I'm a Nor-Vise guy. I think I rather continue learning the old school methods for getting from A to B instead of starting all over and loosing the techniques I'm only just getting good at.

If I had 30 years of tying under my belt I'd probably add this to the arsenal, but being only 1 year in I think I need to get a lot better before I start looking to reinvent how thread gets put on a hook….

Norm sure was one helluva nice guy though, Im really gonna hate bringing this back.

Ok... although I don't tie much anymore, I will say that I've owned a Nor-Vice for a good 10 years and would never use anything else. It may take a little getting used to but for me, I think it's a great product. I also think his bobbins are the absolute best. I love the spring action in them.

If I were you, I'd give it a chance, break it in, and use it. I think you'll find that after a few days you will find that tying with it makes things so much easier than with a traditional vice.

Just my 2 cents.

Have u ever seen one of DC's flies? All i can say is that Steven Hawking can tie a better fly.

No, I just can't get past the inline jaws. I need my hand to be below the rear of the hook to mount material comfortably and just can't talk myself into relearning things I've just gotten used to.

If it was $250 or even $300 for the kit I could live with some of the trade offs but for almost $450 I need to love this thing and I'm just not there. Too bad too, I really wanted this to work out.

Just looked at the web-site and it lists the vise for $295. I hope you got some upgrades for that price. I have used a Renzetti for 20+ yrs. It was $110 back then. I've used it for 5/0 to 24 hooks without any upgrades to the jaw system. Your flies look pretty good to me! Why spend that kind of money on a vise?

Spor on baby blue,I've had a renzetti for just as long. Couldn't tie on anything else. I've put monster 8/0 salmon hooks in it down to tiny 32's . I love not having to change the jaws. I still haven't even had to replace the jaws.

It was $415 w/vice, bobbin kit, table and waste basket not $450.

I like the idea of supporting someone who loves what you love and is trying to make a living doing it. Ill pay a little extra for that.

"Your flies look pretty good to me!" THNX!

the warranty on these vises are great... did u really need a waste basket though!? If anything, keep the bobbins.

Hey Lee Wulff

3 names. Is he an assassin? :)

I think babyblue's point about your flies looking good without the new vice gets to the crux of the matter. I also think your flies look very good, and I'm surprised that you've only been tying for about a year.

You said that you wanted to support someone who loves what you love and is trying to make a living. So it sounds like you bought something that you really didn't need. No crime there of course, and you aren't the only one who did that at the show. I now have a cree neck that I didn't need because I think hackle grower Charlie Collins deserves our support since he did right by fly tyers during the feather hair-extension craze.

But if that's your position, then here's the thing...when you call in the big pledge to the telethon, you need to mail in the check when it's time.

So what did you do?

"So what did you do?"

I skipped the show today and tied a doz more flies on it.
:)

I'm gonna keep playin with it until the guarantee is up and I have to decide one way or the other.

LU,
My other vise is my sons Dyna-King Professional He got for Xmas last year. Great vise but three of us are tying now so a new one was in order.

"did u really need a waste basket though!?"

I just got one that mounts to the stem of the dyna king and its the GREATEST THING EVER!!!

No way I'd skip that and compared to the rest of the kit it was almost free.

Have you ever tried a Regal vise?, the jaws have the same angle as that one in the picture, and they are very easy to use...I like mine!

I had trouble upgrading my vice. I read a few reviews before I made a purchase. My trouble is I have big hands. Most of the vises I tried did not accommodate my sausage fingers. Still the best way to pick a vise is to sit down and tye with it before you bye it. What I did is used a broad range of flies to test the vise from the smallest Midge to the largest Streamer that I would tye. If you can afford it. My first choice was the Jvice . There is adequate space between the fly and the rotary mechanism to allow my hands to hold the material comfortably. It is pricy. At the time my wife was not happy with the cost and I was denied. Showing her the inadequate space on the vice ( my second choice) and difficulties that it causes. I have some what convinced her that I need a better designed vice. Out of all the vices that I have tried, the Jvice was hands down the best. It is a well designed mechanism.

The j vise is the vice I really wanted. I almost left w/the one jay had at the fly tying show, I couldn't swing the Damascus jaws though and it wasn't black:)

I'm shootin for next year on that one. I want to have 3 vises so me and the kids can tie together.

im prolly keepin this nor vise too. Readin posts on other forums it sounds like norm really takes care of his customers and that's the kind of guy I wanna buy from.
