Night Fishing???

has anyone had success fly fishing at night? i've heard from several people that the fishing can be deadly at night, especially when using big, guady flies like mouse patterns and big muddlers targeting browns.

if you guys have tried this, let me know what your successes or failures have been.

This website has a great search feature, fyi.

I would recommend reading at least two books for further insight:

Night Fishing for Trout by L. James Bashline. This author is old school (the old school fly fisherman who lurk this board will know of this guy...) and talks with great detail about tactics and supporting stories about fishing for LARGE brown trout at night in the Central PA trout fisheries with LARGE wet flies. Highly recommended.

Joe Humphrey's Trout Tactics is another great reference. He also discusses with great detail about strategies about how, when and why. This is a bible for serious insight. He also a video entitled The Night Game. Another great reference and supporting testament about success of fishing in darkness.

I own these references.

If you even want greater depth of insight, you have to understand that Joe is a protégé' of Mr. George Harvey. His books also provide great detail as well - "Techniques of Trout Fishing and Fly Tying"

hey, great post guys. I will be looking into both of thos selections. i was hoping it would be true *killing big browns with monster flies*

i'm so anxious to get those now.

My brothers and I often fish after dark, especially when the hatches come off late. Targeting those large wise fish is often best after dark, muddlers, buggers, all good after the sun goes down.

I love night fishing. It's the best way to get some solitude on some of those famous pools. I find it more productive on freestoners than tailwaters. For my purposes in this post, I don't consider the mainstem a tail water.
