Night Fishing for Big Trout

For the last 25 years I have been fishing the ocean surf at night for large stripped bass with much success. As a new fly fisherman, using the same strategy for large trout, what are your favorite flies, streamers?

My favorite fly is the night crawler. Comes in a plastic white or blue container. They work great for large trout.

In all seriousness, larger wooly buggers in black and olive work well. Don't be afraid to tie some glow in the dark strands of crystal flash in there. Works well as an attractor.

MIIIIIIICE....

by far my favorite streamer when you are fishing at night, for a selective, large trout. generally, medium sized mice, grey/black in color, i insert a rattle, and also attach a glow in the dark dot on the top to track it.

however, when you get a strike, you'll know.

you are fishing for the possible 2 largest fish in the pool *on most streams*, on bigger rivers possibly more so dont expect a ton of action. if you do get bit, its going to be large though.

also, like he said, the largest wooly's you have.

VERY BIG WET FLIES....Tied the size of half dollar coins or even silver dollar coins, size 2 / 4 / 6 being used......Gold ribbed hares ear is a great pattern, Black gnat another good one, Tie these flies full, these flies move water and that is what you want, the BIG trout feel the vibrations of these flies and chase them down very firmly, these flies imitate crayfish, mice, baitfish........FOOD in neon.In my opinion streamers just don't have the Big full bodied effect, they thin down in profile when they swing under tension, Big wet flies Pulsate, you can feel it in the rod / ...2 a.m. until 4 a.m. seems to be the most productive period, the waters have had time to cool off and the quiet of night has relaxed the big fish making them feel confident as they move into the tailouts of the pools to feed. Use 1X tippets & 5 foot leaders, under darkness these fish are not at all leader shy. Short casts are the rule into the tails or the very head of pools is were they will feed. KNOW YOUR WATERS / do not explore new waters at 2 a.m., if you do it's a great way to drown or at least break something or lose something, and I am talking bones or eyes ! and make sure Night fishing is legal in your state or waters. Also if you need a light , wrap the lense in red cellophane, any noise or bright light will send the big fish to the depths for at least 24 hours. I have not Night fished for trout in many years but these techniques will still work today 18 - 23 inch trout are common, and I have seen 28 + inch ones but they don't get that size by being naive and foolish...........good luck / FT

This is a good example, but a bit on the small side. F/T

I fish streamers, mostly brown trout parr patterns.

I like to bring them to the surface and allow them to move as if injured.
