Can one of you boobs give me a short breakdown on what got passed. And does it ban weapons or clips already owned, and if it does, what are NY residents supposed to do with them. Thanks. From what I understand it only allows mags of 7 rounds or less, what does someone do with a .22 that may hold 15, or a handgun which holds more than 7. Sounds like typical gun legislation written by morons who know nothing about what the voted on.
Assault Weapons Re-classified
The legislation is centered around assault weapons, with many new restrictions on the classification of assault weapons, as well as the magazines and ammunition that accompany them.
The new law classifies an assault weapon as having any one feature of a military rifle, such as a flash suppressor, folding stock, thumb hole stock or a pistol grip. The old law defined an assault weapon as having two features of a military rifle.
Current owners of assault weapons are permitted to keep them, but it must be registered, and every five years re registered. They will check ton see if you are legally able to own the rifle at that time. All gun owners must obtain a license to own their firearms and register them and renew their license every five years (there is some vague wording about licensing and registration) but all gun owners must have a license.
The gun can also be passed to an immediate family member. Other exchanges require a background check through a licensed gun dealer.
It's also now illegal for New Yorkers to buy an assault weapon over the Internet.
Ammunition Changes
There are changes to the amount of ammunition that can be carried by a legal gun owner. Magazines holding more than seven rounds are now banned. However, those who currently own a magazine with a capacity greater than seven rounds, but fewer than 10 rounds, will be grandfathered in, but prohibited from loading more than seven rounds.
Those who use magazines that hold greater than 10 rounds have one year to sell the magazine out of state. All others will be in violation of the law.
The legislation also includes additional penalties and restrictions for gun dealers in New York.
Also all sales of fire arms to include private sales must have a background check completed before the sale is completed. There will now be background checks for the sale of ammunition.
Anyone deemed mentally unstable by any professional health care provider will be disqualified from owning a firearm. Oh yeah, to renew your "license" you have to have a mental evaluation. Which means they can just call you crazy and take your guns.
