My first king salmon

Got up to the salmon rover earlier this month with BHC. Got to experience the insanity of the salmon run for the first time. So many fish in the river they would bump into you in places. I fished estatz eggs in chartreuse and pink. I must hae hooked (snagged) about 20 plus fish) in a little over a full days fishing. Second time using my new switch rod and it's a lot of fun using a 2 hand fly rod. Here is a pic of a male king about 25lbs that I managed to hook in the jaw. interesting that when you hook them properly they don't jump or peel off line quite like they do when you hook them in the dorsal fin. This guy had a wicked kype jaw. Looked like Jurassic fish.. All in all a good time but I think I will focus on steelhead in the future

The switch rod was a prototype of the allen flyfishing Olympic switch rod. Its an 11ft 7 weight paired with one of their reels. I am using a short scandi line from Rio. Its perfect for this rod.

i have the 11' 7 wt zaxis switch rod...if you go to titelines in parsippany you can cast any head you want behind the store on the grass..there are alot of differences when you try a few..i think the airflo scandi compact is far superior to the rio..i feel the same about the airflo scagit too..all the guys over there use the airflo stuff..you wont know until you try them..he has demo shooting heads for any rod in both scandi and scagit..thats whats so nice about that place is you can cast any rod or line to see and feel how they perform.

I have heard good things about airflo. I took the recommendation on the rio short scandi from one of the product guys who designee the rod. He said it was better than the switch line. Sounds like the compact might be somewhat similar. I just took delivery of a spey rod So I may check out the airflo when I get the reel.
