Lost Rods on the West Branch of Delaware

ATTENTION: On May 25, 2011, some rods and reels were accidentally left behind at the BALLS EDDY Takeout on the UPPER DELAWARE RIVER. When the owner returned for the rods, they were gone.

Hi guys,

Patty and I made a rookie mistake last night at Balls Eddy.

We set 4 fly rods down near the big willow tree and then drove off without them!!!!

Realized the mistake about 20 minutes later and the rods were gone.

If you were the kind soul to pick up the rods to protect them from getting run over, please let us know so we can retrieve them.

Thanks all for the help!!!

You probably already know this...but there seem to be a lot of "lost rod" posts lately, (there's currently an active topic on GST about a reel)....so I'll say it...

If you have to put something down for a moment before you can stow it:
  • Do not put it on the trunk lid...

Do not put it on the roof...

Do not put it in the bed of a pick-up, unless it fits inside entirely...

Do not set it on the ground, or lean it on a nearby tree...

    Put it on the hood!
You're unlikely to drive off without it, when it's right before your eyes.

I agree with the advice. Also, pay extra attention when/if sharing stuff. Just last week, I went through one of those 'didn't you have it?.. didn't YOU have it?...' conversations. Twice I had to pull back in to a spot to pick up a rod. I hope you get your stuff back. I don't know any fly fishermen that would hold on to someone else's stuff. Last year, I posted that I left a fly box on a rock. Two weeks later, a guy mailed it back to me. I sent him a Cabela's gift card for the same value of what he returned to me.

I helped the last guy out with this. Check the baxter house in roscoe. I was only three blocks off with my last hunch. Bigger things than rods have turned up there.

Just call me master sleuth cabarle or csi cabarle. Thank me when you find them.

For some more sleuthing... If it was not a fly fisherman who picked things up - there would be a very good chance they'd show up on eBay or Craigslist. You should start browsing. It could be easy to spot especially if they try to sell everything together. I don't know if there's any recourse - but at least you'd know.

Here we go again

Didnt this just happen last week??

I really hope that I can be impressed again by man just as I was yesterday when another GOOD FLY FISHERMAN lost his rod and reel. I was impressed because some GREAT KIND SOUL brought his fly rod and reel to a Fly Shop in ROSCOE NY and he was returned his gear.

My heart goes out to you and your wonderful woman Patty -- I hope to GOD that someone does the exaxt same thing for you -- Although it was 1 Rod and Reel Last week -- 4 Rods and Reels Man that hurts not only the pocket book -- it hurts that they are probably all your rods and reels so if you dont get them back you need to buy new rods just to fish.

I'll say a prayer for You and Patty

Good Luck

Peace
Dan

Hi guys,

No luck yet. What a way to start the season.

I do not care so much about my loomis, but my friend had a custom made bamboo that I would dealry love to get back to him.

There is of course a generous reward offered.

No questions asked.

Please, if you hear of something I would appreciate it.

Jim

Very sorry to hear about your lost stuff - that's a serious pile of gear! I'd recommend winning some casting competitions to replace the rods.

Hi All,

It has been nearly a week and not a word about the rods.

Very disappointing.

Please let me know if you hear anything.

There will be a nice reward and no questions asked.

Jim

Hi All,

We ae still hoping that the rods will appear on our doorstep one night or dropped off at West Branch Angler.

Please!!!

Check the baxter house in roscoe. I was only three blocks off with my last hunch. Bigger things than rods have turned up there.

The only thing I could think of that was bigger is a bread box.

or a lonely boat anchor...

Seriously, hope you get your rods back.

I always bought my baseball gloves in the fall, that way I could work it in all winter.

Half way through the season I set my glove on top of my bike seat, ten minutes later it was gone.

That was 43 years ago and I still feel the pain of losing that glove.

So I know what it is like to lose something of value.

Good luck in finding them.

Sorry to hear about the rods. I was there after you but did not see them.

Jim,

It really sucks that these rods are gone. Some people would leave them where they were, some would take them home and post them on the internet. Others will hide them so the wrong person couldn't claim them as theirs. In any case, do you by any chance have pictures of your gear?

Also, I say we change the title of the thread. You know where you put them. Lost is when you forget or misplace something. They were indeed stolen, otherwise they would still be right where you left them.

Hi,

Thanks for asking about the rods.

We have not heard a word about any of them.

Very dissappointing, but thanks for helping get tge word out Dennis!!

Fish were rising this afternoon on the mainstem at Stockport to olives and a bigger fly, perhaps still Isos.

West Branch is still dirty from the reservoir and the East Branch is quite clear.

The mainstem is still not mixed well below Buckingham. IT is easy to see the clear vs dirty water. Amazing

cant believe those havent popped up....ridiculous. For the most part you usually see guys leaving stuff at shops or doing what they can to get stuff back to people. Its situations like this that always make you worry about leaving a rod in the car, the boat in the driveway, ect.
