Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Looking to get lost.

MJahnz

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
I'm looking to do some hiking in central NY this weekend in celebration of independence. I'll be carrying a one man tent, a fly rod, some flies, a distiller, and three days worth of food. My goal is to explore some smaller Catskill tribs in search of wild brookies. Size is not an issue. I have the Slide Mtn area near Denning in mind at the moment but I was wondering if anyone has alternative suggestions. I'm new to the Catskills but have some knowledge of the major rivers in the area just not the tribs.

Thanks.

MJ,

I've not been there(yet) but I hear that the upper Neversink area above the reservoir, both the east and west branches, is just beautiful. I don't know about camping laws, so that you'll have to find out for yourself. Another area you might consider is the upper Willowemoc above the DeBruce Club waters. Same disclaimer about camping.

Have a great time and keep it clean.

MJahnz,

Over the years, I've done a lot of hiking in the area you're planning to visit. But I have not gone with fishing in mind, just hiking. Although the Neversink would be good for fishing, it mostly follows the roads and the large majority of it is posted above the res, so if you're looking to get away from the road, it may not be an option. However, there is a trailhead at the end of Denning Road that does follow the E Branch of the Neversink. About a mile up the trail, there will be the trail to Table Mtn and Peekamoose Mtn and taking that trail, you'll cross Deer Shanty Brook and then imeediately after that, the EB of the Neversink. I've never fished the area but it should be interesting (should be some Brookies there). If you're into the hiking thing like I have been, you'll want to do Peekamoose. It's a good, steep one, climbing more than 1600 ft from the parking lot in a little over 3 miles, and most of it in the last 1.5 miles. But that's less than the 2600 ft climb from the trailhead at the other end, beginning along Peekamoose road. The Cornell-Wittenberg-Slide trail is a great one to do but I don't think you'd find much fishing along the way as most of the elevation is too high for much of a stream to hold fish (probably they freeze solid in the Winter). There is trail a few miles from my house that goes over to the upper Ver Noy Kill. It definitely has numbers of trout in it and it's a fairly easy hike to get to. Also a very pretty stream, with a few falls where the trail crosses the stream. There are many other options. I assume you have maps and trail guides, but if you need more info, send me a PM. Have fun!!!

Bruce

By the way, the view from the top of Wittenberg is definitely one of the best in the entire Catskills!!! You get a great view of the upper basin of the Ashokan and on a clear day you can see the Berkshires!!!

MJ,

The entire area these guys have described lies with the boundries of Catskill State Park. You can camp anywhere you want as long as it's 100 ft. from a rd., trail, or water unless it's at a degignated camping area. These are marked with a round, plastic (about the size of a pringles top) marker which reads "Camp Here". If you chose the Upper Willow you can park at the Long Pond trailhead on Flugertown Rd. in Willowemoc. The stream is right across the road and is public from about 1/2 mile downstream up to it's headwaters. From the top the headwaters of the Beaverkill aren't very far, easily less than a 1/2 day hike. Wherever you go I'me sure it will beautiful an d the trout will be plentiful and willing. Good luck and enjoy.

Keith

Thanks for the replies guys. The upper EB Neversink at the end of Denning Rd. is exactly where i'm looking. Hope the weather is good. I can't wait.

The upper Willow area looks interesting too. It looks possible to skip over to Fall Bk, hike up the mountain and down the other side to the upper BeaverKill as you suggested BEAMOC. That'll have to wait for another weekend.

Hope you had a good time MJahnz. One thing to remember is that there are wild brookies in almost any and every little brook you will find in the Catskills. Little jewels of blue and purple, and red, and orange. Please release them.............i know it's hard to not want to eat one. I always want to "just take one" but i don't. They're just to damn precious. Enjoy your self. mark...........

good info is good info. The post with the wayback machine prompted me to do a little key word search. Even if this place is not so active anymore, it is certainly a treasure trove of good info. And Biscuit Brook seem like a good place to get lost and maybe fish a bit. There really isn't as much real good back country fishing in the Catskills as one might think. At least not too many place I've hiked.

Biscuit Brook is very nice but during the nice weather, you'd probably see other hikers and/or campers. It's a great day trip. I've been there a couple times over the last few years after seeing a video on you tube from astro camper.

im mad late and this is a biggggg spot burner. Vernooykill falls. the upper vernooykill near ellenville has the most intact wild brookie water w/in 100 miles from nyc. (googled it its exactly 100 miles from downtown manhattan to yeagerville rd trail head) also last time i was there there was this grove a little below the falls (which are great falls for swimming on hot days [cold like rondout creek blue hole cold], you can slide head first down them into a plunge pool), the place had a biiiiiggg wild fire and theres all this burned down forest kinda near the falls but out of eye shot from the falls so its not that garish but mega cool. i should go back there for the first time in abt a decade to see how the forest is rebounding.

reallllllllllly good brookie fishing, great scenery, lots of wild edible berries, dark water so bright days they wont be as wary. not that bad to fly cast in for a small creek. again really really really cool spot and last time i was there there were no browns, only brookies. and its not that tiny like the rivulets off of slide mtn and other mtns, or the tiny rivulets on the upper beaverkill/willow. its prob abt 20 feet wide in places with lots of pools. the lower section where it falls into ellenville is all straightened concrete horse shit, kinda sad it could have had great brookie potential. i found it by looking up brook trout populations in each watershed near me. all the watersheds in the catskills were mostly red (indicating low populations of wild brook trout) there were a few yellow (indicating medium populations of wild brookies) but a single one was green (indicating perfect populations of brookies).

its a bit of a hike tho and GO IN FROM THE WEST SIDE. NOT THE UPPER CHERRYTOWN ROAD SIDE (east) make sure to take this advice unless you want a big workout. the cherrytown road side is a littleeeeeee faster to get to the falls but its like vertical and a rock garden all the way up. the other side yeagerville road is a nice flat walk through nice mature forests and berry patches. early spring is a lot of mud on that trail as its used by snow mobilers and atvers. the trail head is right past a christmas tree farm on the top of the ridge. cant miss that. normally no one is there, good parking.

anyway after that research abt intact brookie watersheds (red yellow green) i ran into an older couple as i was lifeguarding on littlepond in the catskills for a summer. we hung out at their site/camper and they were maaaaad chill, smoking weed with us and shit. i asked the gentleman if he knew any good brookie waters and he spilled the beans abt vernooykill falls saying there are fatty brookies in there and only brookies. that was the last straw i had to go there. and thank god i did amazing brookie fishing in an amazing setting, great swimming, ample berries. but lots and lots and lots of bear shit and BIG bear shit all over that trail. but they prob only want the berries. Also its like one of the few streams that are tannic in the catskills (brown water) after fir brook so its a nice change. beautiful brookies too. brought my smoking hot gf there as an 18-20 year old, she loved it.

https://www.google.com/maps/dir/41....0441,-73.9441485/@41.6713043,-74.287442,10.8z here you go thats the trail head. and yo cherrytown road trail head is a bit of a shorter and easier drive from the south but once again, unless you want a vigorous work out do not take that trailhead, DO NOT. im not gonna go there for awhile so id like to hear about it if someone goes there, hence the spot burn. i hope browns didnt get into there but the gradient is so steep that they would need humans and buckets to get browns in there and its far from the road

also little cool tidbit. in roscoe (i think) i saw a memorial for catskillers who died in ww2 and a bunch of the last names were Vernooy. Brookies and patriotism thats what its all abt

and again if someone goes there after reading my post. please reply to this thread to for me. or at least private message me

Seems that the Original poster succeeded, no thanks to the great people of NEFF. He asked how to get lost and apparently the suggestions did a great job, he never came back and he was never found.

Will that be your first time going there? Do you see the directions I put? Don’t go in from cherrytown (or cherry whatever) take the extra few mins to go to the yeager side. And again throw anything that isn’t a brookie onto the bank or keep it or whatever. But I doubt you’ll see anything but brookies. Only similar brookie fishing I’ve seen in the Catskills was the upper rondout near blue hole. And please take pictures and if you go a little downstream (less than a football field) you’ll see the old forest fire. I’d love to see pictures of it 10ish years after I’ve been there too see how it is recovering. You can’t miss it

It will be my first time exploring the area. The Yeager Town road advice is good too. I've read it in some hiking groups. Not sure when I'm going but I'll post when I do.

i googled it, its fucked now, good luck fishing between russians and asians from nyc. fuck, i didnt ruin it by my post but if u google it its all instagram ppl swimming and taking their kids/wives/cousins/uncles/brother-inlaws/ex-wives there. and theres posts saying "better get there early for parking". mother fucker... when i was going there only like 10 years ago there was no one, parking wasnt a question.

good luck tompg and lmk but it seems to be fucked now.....

good fucking luck.... this was from last year https://www.google.com/maps/place/V...f813f3!8m2!3d41.8722606!4d-74.3702719!9m1!1b1

yep after further googeling its fucked now, completely fucked.... fuckkkkk im only 32 and ive seen a nice secret place fucked by people finding it. oh and my town which has been completely over crowded from nyc and nj cause of covid and blm shit. It's a "white flight" scenario from the 70's-90's that keeps expanding our suburbs, all over again

SO YOU ARE STARTING TO SEE THE WISDOM OF C.W. Stewart???
Take his advice...

yes, that is true.

The people of NJ know about Saxton Falls...

I guess they care about Saxton Falls.

Saxton falls isn't going anywhere... Is it RUSTY?

Why can't I post Photos?

One day even obsolete dams like Saxton Falls will see removal. But that isn't anywhere near a top priority in a river like the Musconetcong since we have many dams still in place below it and there are anadromous and catadromous fish entering the river from the Delaware that will receive priority funding first.

I finally made it there yesterday. Nice hike, beautiful river, no fish. I didn't try too hard though. Saw two other people. Can't make uploading pics work.
