Looking for a good fishing book

The Royal Coachman

I fish because the voices in my head tell me to
Just finished "Inventing Montana" . I think one would enjoy this book more if they are tuned into the Western Fly Fishing scene.

What's everyone else reading? Any good suggestions?

Try "The legend of the Snowfly" or just about anything from thomas Mcguane

Any good suggestions?

Facts or fluff?

Personally, as an east coast guy I prefer all of the great books from the eastern writers like Schwiebert, Fox, Marinaro, Humphreys, Harvey, Shenk, Koch, Leisering, Cucci & Nastasi, Bergman, Lyons and others.

I don't get into the fluff stuff but most of these writers have a fluff piece or chapter or two to their credit.

Oh yea, don't let the copyright dates scare you. It's all still good!

Wait until my book hits the shelves. It's sure to be the first fly fishing book that will have nothing to do with fly fishing. I'm also sure it will be on the best sellers list.

For the salt: Eastern Tides or 20 Years on the Cape by Frank Daignault are both great reads... just for reading, and can often be found in libraries.

For sw flyfishing, I'm currently reading Inshore Fly Fishing by Lou Tabory

River Why_ David James Duncan; easily the best book involving fly-fishing ever written...:)

I just finished that one, too. I've fished the area the book is about for over 25 years and it didn't make any diffference. I didn't enjoy it.

Hungry Trout Publishing is taking advance orders for Dennis' book.

Let's not forget The Earth is Enough by Harry Middleton.

As for The River Why, I'm curious: Am I the only one who didn't like it? If I remember
correctly, I felt as if I were reading a Woody Allen novel.

If you fish here in nj go down to shannon's fly & tckle and get matt grobert's book!

The Travers Corners Series by Scott Waldie are great.

Pale Morning Done by Jeff Hull is an awesome read.

Thanks for all these replies. I should have clarified something. I've read most of the classic books on fishing including Matt's :thumb:

What I meant to ask is what NEW books have you read that you would recommend.

BTW I would not recommend "Inventing Montana"

If you are a tyer or even have an interest in the Catskill tradition, "Tying Catskill-Style Dry Flies" by Mike Valla is a great choice.
