Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Let's fish for smallmouth

EB WADER

Master Baiter
Hey guys just an idea. How about we fish for smallmouth on the Main stem or lower East until flows improve. I know it's not quite the same as rising trout but it will keep your fly rod in your hand this summer, they rise to surface flies and we will do no harm to the stressed out trout. They are plentiful and they make a nice camp dinner if you like to eat fish. Plus you can wet wade to keep cool. You can even try for stripers on the Main stem as well. Just something to consider as a way of giving the trout a break without having to stop fishing on the scenic Upper Delaware River , as we continue to fight for cold water to save the trout fishery.

Totally agree with you EB, I've been fishing my local pond for bass and hope to hit the big D
this weekend for smallmouth. Maybe I shold try the lower EB too, it's nice water and no crowds. Different subject how do you get in touch with Buckhorn to get a cabin, can you get one for one night?

Anyone have success using poppers for bass? I used to have a blast using them in Round Valley Reservoir for Sunny's and Crappies. What's the best things to use for fly fishing for bass? I might take the kids to a pond tomorrow.

Poppers

Hay Dennis,

I go to Round Vally offten and a popper on a 7wt works great. Smallmouth and rock bass love them. I also use that at my local pond I find that Peck's Poppers work the best. I just strip them back slow and let them rest for a few sec and the bass grab them.

I use small poppers for larger sunnies and bluegills, big ones for bass. They hit them best after letting them sit for a time, them twitch them and BANG! Works best in the weeds. Find an opening, hit it and let it sit. Great fun, and the anticipation is killer. I find the best ones are with the little rubber legs.

However, my biggest fish hit underwater flies. I caught a two-pounder on a size 12 soft hackle once, a simple hare's ear body with two turns of hen's hackle. But my favorite to fish is a Dahlberg Diver. When the deerhair gets waterlogged, they do magical things just below the surface.

I've also had good success with weighted flies, and in deeper areas I use a sink tip line. But nothing is as much fun as topwater.

Dennis,

Try a stick bait with the trebel hooks removed and replace with one single hook. The bass eat them no matter what you do with them. They are great for kids. It can sit on the water, strip it, twitch it, rip it, it doesn't matter, they will crush it.

You might also try a little tube jig called a "Mighty Mite". It will also prevoke a strike regardless of what you do with it.

Garden Hackle is probably gonna be the best bet for the kids, it never fails.
