Lehigh River

Ditchrat

Living the Dream one cast at a time
I broke away and fished the lehigh river last evening. I intended to fish till after dark but that didnt happen.

I started fishing a 5:00 pm and was greeted by some slate drakes emerging and some Pteronarcys. Something about a size 8 stimulator followed by a size 10 slate drake thats enough to put a man into a state of arousal. Lets face it, it that don't give you a hard on nothing will.

Ok back to fishing, the water was slightly tea colored, which short hard rains always cause the swamps up above to release tanic acid, and surprisingly cool.

Working the fast water was fairly productive and I managed a dozen takes, but only the real contenders managed to hold on to the fly for the ride. I got a couple real nice browns 14-16 inchs and some overly aggressive bows. Saw a beast of a pally work my fly over, why they put those things in the river I will never know. Stupid misfit, easy snagging target fish.

By 7:30 I was sick of fishing, checked out some spots to find fish rising steadily to smaller caddis and I presume light cahills or sulpher. Honestly I didn't take the time to look as I was just enjoying some scenery between trucks rolling over 476. Thats you hint to location btw:rolleyes:.

Nice relaxing evening made it home in time to get some work done before bed. Can't complain about much if anything about last night.

If your in the area there is some kind of boat race being held about the damm, maybe worth a look.

Ditchrat,

Great post thanks for the update.....SICK OF FISHING HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT!!!!!!! Maybe you were sick of fishing a certain spot...or a certain method...or a certain fly...but sick of fishing...NEVER!!

I fish the lehigh by white haven, always have good fishing still learning this stream. the feeders i always do well, I have always heard if your not falling in the lehigh your not fishing it. my cabin is 15 mins away.

I fished the Lehigh on sunday with a friend from my canoe. We went after smallies and for the first time this year we found some very nice ones. We both forgot our cameras so sorry no pics, but we got three or four around the three pound mark. A bunch of smaller smallies, lots of rock bass, some really fat blue gills. The best of the day was at the last stop before heading to the take out. My friend got onto something BIG, we knew it wasnt a smallie. We both started thinking BIG BROWN (not the horse), but when we got to see the thing we knew right away.... TIGER MUSKIE. IT was not a huge one, (just over thirty two in.) but he did land it with ultra light tackle. Was a great trip overall and gave me great pleasure to be able to get that big of a smile on a friends face.
Dont forget all of the great warm water specie fishing we have for the summer.
