KLG River Conditions and something else...

From Long Valley to the Gorge, approximately 8 miles of river are at a great level. The SB in Long Valley is perfect while the Gorge was slightly mercky yesterday. Visibility at the Gorge was 2 - 3 feet.

Fishing the Gorge yesterday, I noticed the smell of OUTHOUSE come by my nose approximately every 20 minutes. Someone is definetely dumping raw sewage, or there is a faulty valve somewhere.

Other than that, the fish were taking emergers. I was able to land a couple of 10" brown trout on the water surface using caddis.

While fishing downstream from the trestle in the pool directly downstream from the trestle, A guy started fishing slightly upstream from me with nymphs. No problem as far as I'm concerned. Fish literally jumping out of the water in this pool, and this a$$hole decides he's going to trounce right through. I said to him, "You're not going to walk right through where I'm fishing are you?" He looked at me and said, "Yah, I am." So he started swashing right through where I was casting. I said to him, "You can always tell who the beginners are." This guy was arrogant. Then I said to him, "You should learn some river etiquette, have a little respect for your fellow anglers." The guy shrugged his shoulders and said something to the effect of, "ohh well." The I said to him, "You probably haven't caught a fish all day." And he shrugged again while lighting another cigarette.

For a while, I was working on this fish (which I never did get to catch). Keep in mind that there were fish jumping EVERYWHERE! This guy starts casting for the same fish. People like this need to give up this sport immediately, they are useless wastes of time and a pitifull addition to any river they venture off to.

This jack-off proceeded downstream from me and wouldn't you know it, he caught 2 fish after I just got done calling him a beginner and told him he probably hasn't caughten a thing all day.

He was using a dryfly with a dropper or (BOBBER IN DISGUISE). The dry he was using looked like a "Usual"Olive Usual. This clearly was not the choice of hatching imitations for last night.

Anyway, I now declare that my visits to the Gorge will be in the fall through opening day when the seasonal clowns (no offense to the non-seasonal clowns) are no longer thinking about fishing.

To add to that, the fish were not fighting that great. It's as if they are saying to themselves, "here we go again. I'll put up a little fight and let'm reel me in so I can get release again."

My conclusion of KLG fishing is that there are plenty of fish to be caught, but GO ELSEWHERE, there are many more places to fish.

PS... Why not email me with a few places you fish, they won't leave my lips, I promise.

KLG and etiquette woes.

When I started flyfishing, I had the mistaken impression that flyfishing assumed a quality of character that matched the tackle and surroundings. My assumption has proved wrong on several occasions.Still, I do believe that there are more interesting and considerate adults flyfishing than dingleheads. My mistake was making an assumption about human nature and also assuming that all adults are actually grown up. We've actually posted fliers on fishing etiquette along the river. One of the best things about flyfishing are the people you get to fish with. He was fishing by himself. Are you surprised? Try fishing the Gorge early in the morning, especially during the week. Most people actually leave in the evening just as fishing is getting good. The Whitefly hatch around Labor Day is worth catching. Even better, try fishing the rest of those eight miles of the South Branch and you might just be pleasantly suprised. Honestly, those of us who are actually on the SB everyday often look upon the Gorge as a tourist destination, especially on the weekend.

early early am

caddis, jholland is correct. to avoid the miscreants i fish klg at about 5am to 8am weekends or during the week. most everyone is arriving when i am leaving.

The equipment you use definetely doesn't make you any better of an angler than the next person, it's how you present yourself as far as being conciderate of the people around you as well as being conciderate of the environment and the fish.

The past 3 weeks I fished the D, two weeks in a row I had to yell at people in pontoon boats. This past weekend, I ran into one of the guys I cursed out. I'm not sure if he recognized me or not, but he must have learned something from the previous week because he got out of his boat when he saw me and waded with his pontoon behind me and the other anglers in the area and was very courteous. He never said anything to me, but I was sure as I was MF'ing him for trolling over the fish I was working, he was going to get out of his boat and have it out with me. I even waved him off, giving him plenty of time to get out and wade behind me, but he just cruised over the area I was working as if he owned the river. If you're rude around me, you're going to hear about it. If I have my camera with me, I'm going to humiliate you the best I can by posting posting your picture on website's and awarding you with a rude angler award. Pretty funny I'd actually waste my time on that, but hey... Someone's gotta do it. I figure if they see their picture or hear about their picture on a website under the rude angler awards list, they might think twice about it.

By the way, I don't typically just curse people out... I kindly ask them or at least try to wave them to float behind me. If they just rudely cut in like they don't give a damn, then I give it to them.

I'm the same way Dennis, but if someone want's to be an A-hole they will be treated as such. And Mr. Holland is also correct when he say's the "Gorge" isn't the only place where there is good fishing on the South Branch.

I really do love the gorge. I try my best to ignore the tourists, the rumbling misplaced motorcycles, the "thump thump thump" of the stereo bass, and try to escape to my private place when I'm there. I can't ignore rude anglers, so when they get in my way, I give up my spot to try elsewhere. There's lots of river. If they are rude to me directly they get an earful. Otherwise, I just go.

Fishing isn't just about flyfishing, it isn't just about matching the hatch, or traditional dries on the surface, using the most expensive rod and reel. It's about enjoying what you are doing. So what if someone uses a dry fly indicator, or only uses attractor flies, or uses a three fly rig, or an 8 wt with a size 18 nymph... I say more power to 'em.

Tolerance is an acquired trait that comes with maturity. It's also helpful to keep yourself sane.

I was fortunate once to be fishing one of the runs at the gorge when two anglers started wading right up the center behind me. I gave way and stood on the bank for a half hour watching them cast and get nothing. When they got out, I went back in and proceeded to catch a 20" rainbow right where they had just been casting. They watched while I played the fish, brought it in and released it. At that point both called me an idiot to themselves and left in utter frustration.

Sweet revenge! :D

The KLG wasn't that bad until it was made a TCA. Everyone seemed to think that suddenly the state tossed is several hundred 24" trout. I fished it a couple of times during off hours as others here described, had similar experiences as Caddis, and haven't been back since.

There are plenty of spots to fish in peace and solitude with plenty of fish swiming around within a few minutes drive of the KLG. You folks who like to fish the KLG can keep it!
