It's here! - Sage ONE kit

LyNcH

Dries, wets, nymphs and streamers...it's all good!
I just received my ONE 4wt blank in the mail. Here is what I'll be starting off with.

My first step will be to epoxy the reel seat together, and depending on my motivation tonight, I might install the seat and the cork.

What I like about Sage is that they pre-mark the spline on their blanks, no other rod company does this that i have found. I also am trying out REC recoil guides for this build. They are really nice and will require no touching up of the edges to remove any burrs, another nice time saver. I purchased the kit from angler habitat and for the first time, they also reamed the cork to fit the blank perfectly. This is a huge step which is usually messy and time consuming. On top of it all, they sell kits for the best price on the web.

Let me know when it's done and I'll give you the address to mail it to. :)

I'll build you a rod whenever you want Chris. Just have all the materials needed shipped to my house.

I may have to take you up on your offer. ever turned a bamboo blank? I have found some for a decent price.

I can't say that I have. I have thought about building myself one, maybe next winter. I think I would want to practice on one for myself before building one for you. I'm a perfectionist like that and want to do it right and learn from any potential mistakes on a blank that I bought.

The seat is assembled. I'm too tired to be messing with any more epoxy, looks like the putting the seat and the cork will have to wait until tomorrow.

I working on it!! I installed the reel seat and cork about 3 hours ago with slow cure epoxy. I'm heading off to the gym soon and will probably start wrapping the rod later today once the epoxy has securely set.

I have about 3 antique bamboo rods I was given by my father in law... I bet they would fish but the threads around the eyelets are pretty loose or look they could be easily removed. The real seats are all intact but could use a good polish and the cork revitalized.

What have you all found is the best way to go about fixin these things up to better fishable condition?

CAn I just sand re cork down and rewrap the threads, use epoxy or resin or something? Any quick tips you have would be amazing

Lynch,
Looking good so far..one question how comes there is no second locking ring?just curious.

Nickle,
thers more to it than just wrapping the guides..the cork can renewed real easily as long as it isnt coming apart in rings, use what is called a wonder cloth or a micro fiber an wet it dont try to twist the handle off but wrap it around an roll it in your grip, as for the guides i would consult a bamboo repair guy not that lycnh cant fix it but you might compromise the finish which is varnish..might be better off having a bamboo guy look at it an see if is worth refurbishing....i have a Horrocks Ibbotson that Art weiler Refurbished an it is a great 6 wt was worth it to me to get redone your milage may vary good luck!

Someone else posted awhile back trying gojo to clean the grip. It works great using the above mentioned microfiber. If you want to sand it, use very fine paper, like 800 grit. It's time consuming, but will give you a smooth finish and only take the surface off the cork. Fill the pits with cork putty, resand, then seal with U-40 cork seal.

As far as working with bamboo, I have no experience messing with them, but others on here do. Check out the blog section, Tomfly did a very nice and detailed post on redoing a bamboo from stripping it down to finishing it.

Need to get the rods refinished. Usually involves taking all the eyes off and using a fine grade brillo pad to remove the varnish. Then clean up the blank and straighten it if need be. Replace the eyes and rewrapp then varnish again.

Lynch Lynch ...where are you? Did you finish this rod? has it been christened by the trout? I wanna see more please llike some closeups of your wraps an handle. When we going fishing?

Thanks for the prod Rick.

The rod is done, I kept the wraps simple this time. I really like the REC recoil guides, very light and by far the easiest guides yet to put on a rod. I'll try to take some pictures of it tomorrow. I picked up a very nice real for it as well at a killer price.

I have not fished it yet, only lawn cast it and am pleased. I might try it on the Battenkill this weekend. I've lined it with an Orvis Wonderline 4wt I picked up a month ago for $24 when they were clearancing them.

I never thought I would say this so early in the spring season, but I might be done fishing the Salmon River for the season, just isn't doing it for me this year.

Still working on the pontoon.....it might be soon, real soon......

Here it is. I am really pleased with how it came out. Can't wait to try it!

Sorry to hijack Lynch's thread, (not really) (not even a little), I purchased a Winston BX2 Blank today for 199.99, 10', 7wt, 4pc.... I should receive it in about a week, will give me plenty of time to construct it before the Steelhead Bash of which i still don't know if I can attend. I am looking for some advice on which components I should use, particularly the handle. I am not so interested as to how to build the rod, knowing that the boob Lynch can do it and do it well i may add, i am sure I will master it quickly. Anyone interested in purchasing BX2 blanks at the same price can PM me for the dealer. I purchased the last one in 10' 7wt 4 pc.

I like a half wells or wells grip on my single hand steelhead rods. Best advice I could give is to head to a fly shop and hold a couple rods (fishing rods) and see which one you prefer.

Well have fun with it TT. It'll be fun, just take your time and make sure everything is exactly how you want it (good thread wraps, properly line up guides, properly lined reel seat, etc) before your epoxy sets up and you apply your guide epoxy. Buy slow cure epoxy for the Grip/reel seat and order a fighting butt setup.

Go with a Struble or ALPS reel seat, sometimes you can find a kit with the cork and seat. Fly Rod Cork Handle Kits - Cork Handles In terms of guides, well you can use simple $1-$3 guides or try the REC recoils, which I recommend and they will only add $20 more to the build.

I order most of my stuff from Anglers Habitat & Hook & Hackle. Mudhole.com and J.Stockard are also a great resources site and has everything. Go on the mudhole site and sign up for their paper catalog and use their tutorials.
