Joe's Hopper
esteemed gentlemen,

Given that thousands of visitors are routinely coming to NEFF these days :), I thought I'd float an idea I've been mulling over for some time. A virtual fly fishing tournament, organized entirely online. Maybe the first of its kind?

Rules:

  • Entrants fish in teams of 2-3.
  • They're allowed to fish any water in the northeast from sun-up to sun-down on the designated day. (maybe a Saturday in late April?)
  • Every team writes a post about their fishing day.
  • A prize goes to most beautiful fish (not biggest or most fish).
  • Another prize for best post.
  • Both of these competitions decided by votes from site visitors. (likes/thanks)
Sponsorship:

  • Every team sends $15 per fisherman to the organizer and fishes for a designated charity.
  • All proceeds go to the chosen charity of the "most beautiful fish" winning team.
  • An organizer (I nominate dcaberle and/or MACFLY) will collect the cash and send a check to the chosen charity.
  • (Probably would also be a good idea to post the thank you letter from the charity so there's no um.. misunderstandings about where the proceeds have gone.:))

What does everybody think? I'm going to try to make a poll to see how many people would participate and if there's enough interest we could figure out the logistics and get 'er done.

I like it. The emphasis being on the quality of the day vs. quantity of fish is a great idea.

If it were just about the quantity of fish, I would be in trouble. :)

Plus that would encourage a trip to your local put-and-take to slam stockies all day. Not what most of us are about.

I would be interested. How would the teams be selected?

Hmm... hadn't thought about that. How's this. 2 or 3 guys can work it out on their own and sign up as a team. But individual fishermen can also sign up on their own and be paired with a partner or two who live relatively nearby.

Teams?!!!?? BUT.......I never catch fish when people are watching......:)

As an introverted loner who lives near NO fly fishermen from this site (relatively or otherwise), I feel your proposed contest discriminates against me.
The ACLU is gonna hear about this.

This seems like a great idea. I like the feature that we could have a lot of people participating in the tournament, and yet have no particular river or stream crowded on that day. Details need to be hashed out of course, but I have a hard time anticipating a deal breaker rule-wise that would keep me out.

Alpaca Cupulating Loners United cares about a fishing tournament why?

... beat me to it. I was going to suggest that FF sign up with his favorite crimpy Huacaya (the internets say that's an Alpaca variety). The rules don't say your partner has to be human. I don't know about "best fish" but they'd be virtually guaranteed to win best post.

But seriously, FF, you can sign up as a one-man team if you like. The team requirement in one-fly tournaments is meant to encourage honesty, but you seem like a forthright and sincere misanthrope.

It might be a nice opportunity for you to make some friends though. Just saying. :)

One of the rules should be that neither Beetle or CCM are allowed to participate, unless they are on the same team. I'm just try'in to bring people together.

Ronbo and I don't count. Now that's discrimination there.

If you're going to attempt an insult, Jeez, you have to spell it right. That is unless you MEANT that I surgically attach water glasses to my livestock or something...

Are you TRYING to fill the void left by CMM with his sudden attainment of grammar, spelling and thinking skills?

... beat me to it.

REALLY?!? YOU were going to dis' ME based on the way I make a living? I woulda expected more of a highbrow burn from you given your, well... I can't remember what I'm allowed or not allowed to say... so...

I said no other fly fishermen from this site lived near me, not that I didn't have friends...

How many friends from this site do YOU fish with? :)

C'mon NEFFers, there are 100+ of you online now, and hundreds more of you have viewed this thread!

Man up and weigh in on the poll if you're up for a day of mildly competitive fishing for a good cause.

All you will be asked for is $15, a day of fishing, and a post about your day.

If 9 or 10 of us do this, it will be good for some shits and giggles. But if enough of us participate, we could raise a nice chunk of cash to support trout habitat restoration work in Jersey, anti-fracking legislation, pro-fracking legislation, the National Man-Boy Fly-Fishing Association, puppies for peace, or whatever cause is near and dear to your heart.

Who's in?

Wait, you are to fly fishing as Prince is to pickup basketball? I'll be PM'ing you shortly.

Well I started with silk lines and then I just got carried away. ALL SILK EVERYTHING, Y'ALL.

Actively awaiting any and all PMs.

Judging from that photo, I think I know which charity he'll be supporting.

If Beetle can be my partner im in.

Why should we try, after all, the last generation of cold water fisherman are already on the water....hell lets post all our spots on the internet, and kill all the fish we catch, then there will be no cheating.:)

Lightenup, the solution is simple and right in front of you. Win this tournament and use the winnings to fund your own nonprofit devoted to misinforming people about the location of wild trout streams in New Jersey.

If you do a good enough job, your site will reverse the damage done by WTS, sending anglers to various toxic waste pools, munitions dumps, and strip mall parking lots across the state until they give up altogether.

Like I said, simple.:)

Now that is a would be a team. Beetle and Simms and a yet to be named member. I could try to coerce AK out of retirement. I would sit on the bank and video that action.

Apparently, if we don't post the location of all of these streams on a web-site, that is what the wts' will become....:crap:
