If you could use only one fly?

Scott B

A bad day of fishing beats a good day at work
Here is a interesting question to all. If you had to fish for one year with only one fly pattern what would it be? My personal choice would be a size 10 olive bugger with a bead head. What would be your choice?

Hmmmm.....one fly for every stream....I'd have to go with a #12 2X long black bugger tied with rusty dyed peacock herls. I think I've successfully used this fly almost everywhere I've fished

only one .....only one fly? what fun would that be?

ok, I'll play along: bead head prince nymph

RickW,
Good call on the prince, that would be my second or third choice.

The most important thing I learned from my father fishing wise is to always fish a #14 Gold Ribbed Hares Ear. You can:
1.Grease it and fish it on the surface or in the film.
2.Swing it like a wet fly
3.Fish it down deep High Stick/Lisering Lift or indicator style
4.Swim it like a scud etc

If I really had to live that situation, One fly only, I would tie a catskill type dry fly with ribbed rabbit dubbing, a wood duck or mallard flank wing, grizzly hackle and a mallard flank tail. I'd tie it on a 1x long hook. That fly, like McAwful's grhe could be modified as needed.

spinner: trim the wing, top and bottom hackles

nymph: pick the dubbing to make it bushier, and trim the hackle and wing

caddis larva: trim the hackle and wing completly off

etc., etc

Soft hackle hare's ear (rib & head from fine copper wire).

Second choice, Wooly bugger (olive/brown body, brown tail & hackle).

McAwful has got it right! A GRHE can be rigged for fishing from the top to the bottom. It can simulate an emerger in the film all the way down to a crawler nymph on the bottom. It can be fished in pocket water or in smooth water, and it can be fished in all seasons. I also like cone head buggers, but they are more like a jig, and the GRHE is more of a purists 'fly'.

For me, here in the northeast, I would have to go with one of my soft-hackle caddis larvae patterns. In cream or white. Why?

1) Decent caddis populations are found in most trout streams.

2) Soft-hackle dressing can effectively imitate larvae, pupae and drowned adult.

3) White coloration matches some naturals but also doubles as an attractor. (fishes well in stained water)

If I had only one fly to fish with it would be none other than...

Sir Copper John himself I would.
