Hexagraph Rods

Ahab

Tie em, Cast em, Catch em
I have been using a Hexagraph 8ft., 4/5 wt. for a number of years. I find it to be a wonderful rod, gentle to cast, highly accurate and predictible. I have built and purchased a number of other rods since owing the Hexagraph but it remains my go to rod for dry fly fishing. Seldom see anyone mention these rods on the board. Wondering if anyone else uses one.
Thanks

I have been considering purchasing one myself. I was just going to buy the blank and build it myself though. I tested one at a shop and I liked it alot. Like you said it would only be for dry fly fishing.

Ahab, always wanted to try one. Over at FAOL, there are quite a few guys who like them. Aren't they a bit heavey though? Or is that just the stigma one associates with bamboo? Are they a composite, or what? Been so long since i read up on them. I believe they were used in "The Movie." (ARRTI). I've have heard a lot of good reports on them. Well, one more expense............lol. Now, why only dry fly fishing???????? mark

They are made of graphite, but not heavy. They are supposed to take on the characteristics of bamboo without the weight. They were in the movie that you mentioned.

The reason I was considering only for dry fishing is that the rod is too soft to be throwing any kind of weight. Not enough back bone for that.

Hey Willow, Hexagraph rods are made from graphite strips assembled in a manner similar to a cane rod - the resulting "void" is filled with a "foam" like substance. Results is a smooth, soft rod - action very similar to my cane sticks. As to why I use it primarily for dry fly fishing - I prefer its gentle slow action for the precise delivery necessary with the dry. For nymphing and streamers my go to rod is a 9 ft. Lamiglas Perigee I built this past summer. This is a beautiful, medium-fast stick. Don't know why Lamiglas discontinued the Perigee blanks, but I bought 3 when they were being heavily discounted. I build most of my rods that has resulted in my having far too many for any one man. LOL Everytime I go fishing I have to decide what weight, length, material etc. I want to use that day - Oh the problems of abundance. Funny, I have probably caught more trout on an old Silaflex glass rod that I have owned for 40 years than on any of the high tech, expensive stuff I have purchased or built. Makes one wonder..............

Only thing it's makin' me wonder about is why i haven't bought a Hex yet? LOL! Aint no such thing as havin' to many rods. I just gave another one away the other day. Well........actually this time i traded for something, but for what i ended up with, i might as well have given it away, lol. Fortunately it was to a friends son, and he could really use the rod. I'd had it since the early 90's and never ever fished with it yet. My four pieces of polar bear (three of which were more than half gone) will tye me about 10 flies, lol. I've given away probly 20 rods or more in the last 6/7 yrs., many of which were very fine rods, some of which were average. But hey, as long as the person is gonna use it, why not. Aint no biggie, i got plenty more where they came from. It's only money, they'll print more. Remember, "an armored car, don't follow a hearst." mark

Ahab, no more rods till my full dress atlantic salmon fly collection is complete. And just "WHEN" might that a gonna be? LOL. Remember Sargent York? "I donna wanna, and i ainta gonna." Bullseye! Cat could shoot! mark
