Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

From NJ, will be fishing the catskills next week.

Hello, I will be in the Catskill mountains next week for 5 days and I'll be looking to do some fishing. I fished the esopus last year and only caught small browns and bows. Are there any smaller streams out there that have decent fish that are not as popular. Also, any must have flies or rivers that i ''have'' to fish?
Thanks,Tom.

Either head to the upper East Branch, Esopus in the watershed area, or the West Branch. these are tail waters and will be nice and cool. they're also full of big smart fish. If you want a small stream, head up into the mountains and find a hemlock forest. The streams will be cold in those areas but very low. the fish will also be much smaller than the other rivers I mentioned. you could find a suprise in a deep hole somewhere deep in the forest, but I think the tail waters are your best bet. Files...try an adams.

Yea, like tompg said, you only options now are tailwaters or the headwaters.

The headwaters run cool compared to lower sections or the rivers/streams but still check water temps..

Humpys, irresistables or parchute olives in the 14-18 sizes work great on headwater brookies this time of year.

the UPPER willowemoc and its tribs sounds like the spot for you.

take a water temps before you fish.

dont fish near 70 degrees

67-68 is my cut off

Catskill Mountain Man knows his shit.

Go to exit 96. Make a left. Drive at least 5 miles or so (you'll be in Debruce).

I fished near the covered bridge last night and did very well.

And don't fish the waters if temps are higher than 75 or so.

80 is my cut off.

If you're close enough, fish the West Branch or East Branch as both will be cool enough below their respective reservoirs. Tricos in the early morning hours and sulphurs in the mid afternoon/evenings with some random Isonychia around at times. You may also find some blue winged olives, and don't be afraid to use a black ant if all else fails.

There are some nice pieces of that gem up for sale. Not bad asking prices either.

I know!! There was a bi-level with a detached garage and 6.5 acres on debruce rd for sale last year. They wanted 80k. 1600ft of willow in your back yard... Id commute to my job and hour and a half for that in a heartbeat!!

Since you guys are on the topic of the catskills...I'm heading up to the Delaware tomorrow to fish either the upper east or west.... anyone have any reports? Also anyone ever run into midday sulphurs on the upper upper east similar to the upper west..ive heard this occurs but have never seen it. Thanks guys.

you should have tricos and olives early then in the heat of the day the flys will be less then cahills and sulphurs in the afternoon later like 4 or so pending the cloud cover.... at least that has been what i have seen... i havent been out in the last 2 weeks though lots can change with 90 degree days
