I learned something new today,
I had my first venture out fishing for 2015. I got out to the KLG this morning. The flow was 175 cfm. It looked low for this time of year and the water was 36 degrees. I started out Nymphing in a traditional way, in swift deep runs and pools on the bottom with no takes . When I would enter and exit the stream moving from spot to spot I was kicking fish. I said to myself there is still a lot of fish in this stream. It is not getting stocked until next week. I fished for a few hours without a strike. Then the light bulb went off in my head you have already figured this out without even realizing it. It dawned on me what I was doing wrong. I stated that I was kicking fish while in transition for spot to spot. I did not see it at first but it all became clear what that fish were doing. The fish were lying in the D water, less then 8 inches deep. I think there were behaving this way to get warm. The shallower sections of the stream were either a few degrees warmer then the deeper pools or the fish were sunning themselves to get warmer. What I did was use a short leader technique only 3 feet long from the end of the fly line and very small split shot about 8” up from the size 18 prince I was using. I drifted it trough 6” to 8” deep riffs. I caught 5 in an hour. Then the sun went behind the cloud cover and they stopped feeding.
