Fly Box Help...

bigduhon

Fishizzle, I use worms but I'm looking to upgrade!
Hey guys, I'm starting to amass a lot of flies I've tied and am looking for some better solutions to store them (even the bad ones).

Right now, I'm working with two plastic fly boxes that each have one flat foam insert and one ribbed foam insert. I'm typically storing larger flies like streamers on the flat side and nymphs/wets on the ribbed side. This has worked, but when I started to tie up dries, I ran into a problem. I noticed that the hackle on the dries is getting bent and otherwise messed up when I leave them on either side of the boxes. So, I have added a rather cheap platic compartment box to the mix.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a good all purpose box? Does anyone use anything other than compartments to store their dries? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

It sounds like your problem is the box itself. Its to skinny, so when you close the box, the flies on one side are pushing against the flies on the other side. A thinker box should fix that. I use a cabela's metal box with spring lid bins on one side and foam on the other.

buy more boxes (DUH!) J/k. Try SA system x boxes. Lots of room for hackles. See through case so you don't have to open every case to find the flies you want. Soon you'll be locked into a massive collection of fly boxes that you have to sort through in the back of your car every time you head out on the stream to figure out which flies you'll be fishing that day.

another solution would to start fishing smaller streams, with more brush and trees to help you weed out your flies. that way, you might be able to keep the number of fly boxes down to 5 or 6...:dizzy:

This spring I've taken stumpy's advice to heart! looks like its back to the bench. Check out the boxes made by CLIFF too: Cliff Outdoors. I have two bugger beast jr.'s for streamers. They're very handy boxes.

I bought a C&F Design box for my trip to the Smokies in an effort to consolidate my fly selection. I have been using an Okuma box with half clips, half flip boxes, but it just doesn't hold enough flies. Fishing small streams for wild trout almost exclusively, the C&F box works great. It holds large flies, sizes 6-10, as well as small flies, sizes 14-18 equally. I use one side for nymphs and streamers, and one side for dries. I carry about 4 dozen nymphs and 2 dozen streamer patterns, and about 6 dozen dries in larger sizes, without squashing hackles. The true test will be my upcoming trip, so I'll post my feelings when I get back.

I love the C&F boxes. I couldn't imagine going back to anything else. They are expensive but they also last forever-the foam doesn't get chewed up each time you remove a hook. The other advantage is that C&F boxes hold barbless flies securely.

I'm not sure who else this might apply to but i have made most of my own fly boxes, with styrofoam, some on the market are to expensive for me.. Vince

Thanks for all the help guys. I wound up ordering a C&F Waterproof System box, one 6 row insert, one 8 row insert, and the 5 row divider. I'll let you know how it works out.

The four Muddlers I tied up last night may not make the big leagues and get in the box. I have a damn hard time spinning deer hair...

I have two of them. One for each pocket of my Fishpond vest. You'll love it. Worth every penny IMO. Very spacious inside too. :thumb:

Check out the Scientific Anglers System-X boxes. This might also help in storing your extras using their suitcase system with the interchangable inserts.
