fishing in the rain

kindanewbie77

the sad old dog with no friends
so I'm home form work, and staring out the window.....should I go.....BFB is 15 minutes from the house....got a fire in the wood stove for warmth when i get home.....what would you all do?

I drema strema... go fishing!!! The fish dont mind when its raining they are already wet.

Should be an easy call since its only 15minn away.

No work, week day, close to good water, this is a "no brainer" GO FISHING!

The best part is if you fall in no one will know.

I'll be streamside by 1 o'clock. My wife works from home andhas a 12-12:30 conference call that she has to be professional for, that means I have to be responsible for our 4 month old future fly fisherwoman, but when daddy duty is over I'm outta here!

Hit the same stretch that I fished on Saturday, and despite the downpouring rain I didn't do half bad. Hooked three, landed two. Got all three on a purple prince size 12. The fish that I didn't land has my prince in his jaw....oh well. He was a nice fish, had some serious shoulders. The two that I did land were both holdover brookies, the second being the bigger of the two at 14 inches and had a small hook jaw...he also fought quite well. It was definitely worth being out in the rain, because as I said in my first post, the fires is lit, and I am about to pour my self a nice burbon and warm up!

Jealous. I hit the pond for about an hour in wind and driving rain, didn't so much as see a fish, got back in my car freezing and drove back to work to warm up with a burnt cup of coffee over some AutoCad. It was still worth it until i read your report. Now I'm just spiteful.

Hi there, after finishing with my duties(made beds, lundry dishes etc, etc)I decide to go uot in the rain and fish the stony brook near Princeton and in less than an hour I hook and land three rainbows (14and 2 ,10 inches)and 2 blue gills using small dry and wet flys.I t was great unfortunate it was time to pick up the kids from school any way tomorrou will be and other day

Kiwi,

Where did you park? The last time I went to the Stony Brook I parked in the woods on Quaker Rd. just off 206 and got a parking ticket. I fought it and won (there were no signs) but don't want to go through that again.

A buddy of mine and I went to scout out Stony Brook, we go to college nearby and it looks promising for a southern river. We checked out two spots one near Princeton and the other nearer to Pennington. Is the fishing more productive upstream by Pennington or downstream nearer to Princeton? Just curious thanks a lot. And good for you Kindanewbie for getting out there in the rain. That's what it's all about.

we should start a stony brook fishing report as long as it stays fishable.

I'm also eager to know where the most productive areas of the brook is located, so please keep up the great info!

Hi,I park and fish in River road,Hillsborough.Province line Rd,Princeton.Edgerstoune Rd Princeton (there is a school closed by).pretty brook Rd.Princeton

I was just out to Stony Brook yesterday to scope things out and within a few minutes I was hooked up with what I believe was a trout but didn't get a good enough look before be came off. Nice little brook though. I'd love to know some other productive flies in this super shallow brook.

Fishing-another reason why I love life. So I'm here away from home at college looking for some trout fishing. All I have with me is bass gear (Lake near school and I don't expect trout in the south). I fished Stony brook today with an 8 wt. rod and the only two trout flies I had (which are both lost in that brook right now). I landed two gorgeous brookies lost a few more and got two bluegills as well. Muddler minnow got the brookies and an olive zonker and egg pattern got the bluegills. My friend got two trout and a small bass on a spinner. I never thought I'd be trout fishing with an 8wt...let alone effectively. I just ran out to Dick's (not exactly the Orvis store) and picked up some other flies to fish with here. I'm going home this weekend and bringing back my vest. Don't think I'm crazy it's all I had with me. Tight lines.

Hi there,Im glad it was not rain today, any way rain or not rain it always good to go fishing.Today was a great day (also yesterday with willy buggers)I try my new SAGE TCR in the Amwell lake (very windy)with no cach and after I move to the stony brook near 31 and I cach 19 trout with my 3 wt bamboo rod in 3hrs with dry ,emerges and something that i make (it looks like small beadhead spider)It was great to walk and fish this small strem .
I have some photos but I dont know how to put it in here, can some one help me with that please.

Kiwi/Burt,

Congrats on the productive days! So it seems like the brook near 31 is the most productive, eh? Anyone have any luck with the access point off Rosedale road in Princeton?

Hey, Kiwi, nice bass! There are plenty of nice smallmouth in the area and I love to target them all summer. They are there after all the trout are gone and provide some of the best fishing available throughout the season!

Wow Kiwi, nice fish. I'm headed out to Stony Brook right now actually. hopefully I'll hook up fellas up with some nice fish pics.

I'll be going after them with an 8wt. rod two store-bought bhpn and light cahills and an egg pattern. Hopefully 5 flies can last me the day.

I started about 8 AM and just got back. Caught a bass (small) and a good sized panfish. When I scouted the Brook I did not see anything between the parking area down General Johnson Rd. to the bridge supports just up stream but tried it anyway. Now watch Burt is going to come back with a state record!

A bad day on the water is better that a good day at work.

I was out to Stony brook yesterday and caught a state record brookie (just kidding Irish) I had a trout less day too. Caught 2 sunnies, a small bass and what I believe to be a chubb on a bhpn. Dissapointed but still had a good time. I was with a friend of my spin fishing who got nothing at all. Had to rub the beauty of flyfishing in his face. Saw another fly fisherman who hadn't caught anything and looked a bit confused by our pastime. I'm going to post a picture later on if anyone can identify this little guy I caught.

I just went out to Stony Brook, accessing the Johnson Park entrance in Princeton.

The water temp was 45. I didn't wade or catch anything (mainly because I spent the morning teaching my daughter to roll cast and I'm sure she spooked the fish).

However, another angler on a spin rig caught two brookies using a minnow spinner. There were also plenty of rises near the slow foam, but I couldn't see any noticeable insect activity and only assume they're feeding on terrestrials or maybe stone flies.

Bottom line is they're out there, just need the right imitations.

Went out tonight to Stoney Brook (same place as last time). On the brook around 7:30 PM and fished till dark from the parking area to the Rosedale Rd. Bridge. Caught a ton of pan fish and nothing else. Because there was a lot of surface activity I started with a black hopper, lost it, changed to a "luna bug" (a friend has a white cockatiel and gives me the feathers. The bird's name is Luna(tic)) then switched to a caterpillar.

Burt Sorry to hear you didn’t get the state record but damn glad to hear I’m not the only one troutless.
