First Trip to the Blue Water Key

JasonM

Trout Hunter
Hello everyone,
I have question for those of you that may be familiar with the fishing down in the keys. I have a friend at work that just started fly fishing last year and he is heading down to Blue Water Key in March. He wants to do some fishing, but is unsure of which route to take. He needs work on his casting which may be a hinder to bonefishing I believe. Do any of you recommend guides, do it alone, or should he keep away from the fly rod due to his lack of experience?

I've been flyfishing for years and am taking my first bonefish trip this spring. I just read a story that says "you should be able to cast at least 60 feet, placing your fly 4-6 inches from a moving target at that distance."

To practice, they recommend you stand 60 feet from an old tire, and have someone roll it down the hill while you try to cast into the center.

Hope this helps.
