Clearwater Junction Fly Tying Event

Mark:

I will see you there. I am tying on Friday and Saturday. Arriving at noon on Thursday staying Till monday afternoon.

The show was okay. There were not many visitors, Friday, but the tiers exchanged ideas, techniques, etc. Saturday was a little more active. The weather was quite HOT, especially Saturday. Some of the tiers there were Andy B, Ted Patlen, Aaron Hirschorn, Allen McGee, Mark Romero, Ralph Graves, Bud Guidry, Roy Christie, Mike Johnson,to name just a few.

I had a good time,
Mark

A group of us, perhaps 2 dozen fly fishers and tiers, started get-togethers in that area prior to and at the same time as the 'Clearwater Junction'. We were asked to participate in the first CWJ. Most of us declined the invite for a few reasons. The key one being, we were there to fish.

Being on vacation, traveling 100+ miles to the area, sharing time on the water fishing with people you've known but are finally meeting face to face, having bugs flying and fish rising, generally having excellent fishing weather, etc. VERSUS tying flies and BSing indoors for several hours.

While the goal(s) of the CWJ may be admirable, the timing :dizzy:su*ks.

Mayfly:

This is the second time I have read something that you wrote that really makes sense.

Course your one post that I clearly remember, and I quote quite frequently is;

"People that take themselves to seriously, other's will not."

Hi Allan,
I wanted to get over to see you, but we were busy fishing, too. Now I only tied on Friday, and since I arrived Thursday, mid-afternoon, we got some fishing in Thursday night, Friday morning, Friday night, Saturday morning & Sunday morning. It was just too hot Saturday evening. SO, I got some fishing in with my son and two sons-in-law, plus I got to meet and talk with some nice people and some great tiers.

I do think the planning could be better for the Clearwater show.

Mark:

Boy the weather must have been very hot.. your repeating yourself here....

AK,

Appreciate that. However, I doubt what you quoted was from me.

Allan

I stand corrected sir.

It was dropkick, your post was right before his.

<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1><!-- google_ad_section_start -->Along time ago someone gave some great simple advice.

"If you take yourself too serious, other people won't"

You can take your tying serious, but you should never take yourself so.<!-- google_ad_section_end -->

The Clear Water Junction show could be a really good show if the following was allowed to happen:

1) Better advertising on the Internet and all around the Roscoe Livingston Manor area. There was no advertisemnet this year and a lot of Anglers staying at the Reynolds house did not no about the show on Friday or Saturday.

2) The show should be reduced to a single day event. This way, you get the most tyers and hopefully the most visitors.

3) I also feel that the show needs to be moved to another time of the year. You are asking people to come and see a show during the best hatches and fishing oppurtunities of the year.

Now the thing I enjoyed was going to dinner and hanging out with Ted Patlen and Bud Guidry. I enjoyed seeing a lot of the tyers/friends again. I enjoyed seeing AP, Monty, RW, Mara and Mike B.

I finally gotten a chance to meet my counter part on wet flies who is the soft hackle/flymph side. Mark ties some really nice flies. Saturday rolled around and I went fishing on the BeaverKill in the morning and caught three nice Browns. I then went back to the Reynolds house and tied flies for the evening. At 1:15 I got hungry and decided that Ramondo's would be a good meal. That's where I met up with Ted and Bud who told me that they had enough of the show and decided a meal was a much better deal.

Lastly, The Fish-in / Spring thing is a vacation time and driving a good distance to relax and fish is truly the ticket. I am not sure if I will participate in my third Clear Water Junction next year. The show needs to be more than a group of tyers sitting in a room talking to each other. Not enough vendors and not enough visitors. Again I state the event needs to be planned a hell of a lot better and advertised a ton. Without this, I feel the show will be so so. This show is suppose to be for conservation, I feel that this is a good thing but money needs to be made in order to help or fight or start and or support conservation efforts. This was a small drop in the bucket that could have been a lot better if thought out.

Was Steve Thornton from England there ??

Allan was right, the timing (mid-June) was bad, I would think late July or August would be better, actually this year it will probably be cooler, too.

I agree with Gary. If it were held in late August it would probably get better attendance.

I for one, would have already been fly fishing for many months and some of the excitement would have worn off and that's before the salmon start to run and we're looking for a reason to get away. IIf it were in August, I would have made plans for me and my boys to stay up there and attend your event and fish. But, during the peek of the mayfly hatches and with yard work and honey do lists, it's hard to find time to make the drive up there in the summer.

Also, what about a mass mailing of fliers. That's how I find out about most of the events I attend.

I'll offer this as a suggestion to anyone who is a planner of this (CWJ) event:

The Catskill Fly Fishing Center will be having its annual 'Summerfest' (at least this year) on Sunday, August 10th. If, in your planning, you had had some coordination with that event and gotten the word out about the CWJ you might have scheduled the event for the day before (Saturday). This might have allowed for a more active visitor population. Now I do not know about the anticipated 'Summerfest' date for 2009 but you may want to learn when it is and coordinate your event with it. Not on the same day mind you but the day immediately prior to it.

As I wrote in previous post, having the CWJ in perhaps the week of highest bug activity is not a good idea.

Hi,Gary,
Steve Thornton WAS there. His flies are/were amazingly life-like, yet still fish-able from my point of view. Some realistic flies just do not fish well, but Steve's flies have elements from both the realistic style of tying and the standard type you would fish. Superb is the only word I can think of when I saw his work.

Yeah his flies are nice, his parachute emergers are killers for Isos. I fished with him a couple of years ago on the BK. He then mailed me some of his flies from England in the winter. Great guy
