Welcome back to the new NEFF. Take a break from Twitter and Facebook. You don't go to Dicks for your fly fishing gear, you go to your local fly fishing store. Enjoy!

Carp & Pickeral

They are everywhere. Do some research and hunting around on your own. That's how you get experience then share with others.

I think you are mistaken; neither carp or pickeral are everywhere. I am capable of looking for this information. What makes you believe that I have no experience catching Carp or Pickeral with a fly rod? I am not asking for your favorite spot.

hey bill, i know that a lot of guys go hunting for carp in the housatonic river as it gets warmer and becomes dog days for trout. i haven't done it myself. also, i've seen (but not been able to figure out how to catch) a ton of carp in the main branch of the delaware.

better than these vague answers, though, check out this post on creekaddict.com:

Hi Ricky, I took Chris to one of my carp sites in New Jersey about a week ago. The key to fishing for carp with a fly rod is the carp MUST be feeding. If they are not feeding, go to the movies. Carp are not like other fish. They do not chase a meal. The second most important thing to know is that Carp have an area for feeding that is about 18 inches wide and 24 inches long. your fly must land within that zone. That being said, your presentation of the fly is crucial if you want to land a carp.

That's what I'm saying Trout Fever. I'm not being a wiseguy. They are on most of the ponds on Long Island, most of the warm water rivers similar to the Wallkill.

Don't believe all the hype about carp only taking "carp" flies. Most of the carp I've taken, took your everyday trout flies. I use # 12's to #6's. My hook up rate drops when I use smaller flies. Carp take nymphs, streamers and dry flies depending on what they are eating.

I'm looking for spots that are less than sixty miles from Brooklyn. I know that carp are almost everywhere but carp fishing is really sight fishing. if you can not see a carp it is almost impossible to catch carp with a fly. What I was hoping to find was a nearby place on long Island that fly fishers have used. I'm looking for recommendations. I have maps & books of all the lakes on Long Island( from Flatbush to Montauk) but the maps and books are not made for us fly fishers.

this is sort of an odd one then, but i'll mention it.
i was messing around at V.E. Macy Park in Yonkers (less than 60 miles from B'klyn, anyway!) this morning. I caught a bunch of smallmouth. But...I did see some big old carp swimming through some garbage! I doubt it's what you're lookign for, but I thought I'd throw it out there...

Hey a carp is a carp. ask Chris about the place we fished for carp. if you have never caught a carp on a fly, RUN AWAY. it is the most addictive type of fly fishing know to man. fly fishing for carp is more exciting than unlimited Free lap dances!

LOL, I like how someone pointed you to my post about carping with YOU! I can attest to the addictive qualities of crack, I mean carp. I can't get enough of those smelly ass rubber lipped beasts. I've been looking in every crap filled stream and river I can for these critters. I've found one real good option so far, besides the bum hole that bill took me to. The spot Bill first showed me is perfect, if you don't mind getting stabbed by a hobo. I've heard about another spot that I will be checking out some time this week.
