BKill Advice on flies

New member
Hi, let me start by Introducing myself, I am Gene (Boom2it), I have been lurking on the board for a couple of years and finally thought its time to jump in. This is just my third season to fishing for trout on a fly, and would like to say thankyou for all that I have read on this board, some great insite. I relocated from the PA area back to north Jersey, originally from here. Living in PA is what got me started in fly fishing....anyway enough about me...I will be heading up to the BeaverKill on May 25/26/27 for my 40th Bday and am looking for some advice and what types of flies I should be loading up on. Really looking forward to this trip. Made a scouting "recon" trip up to "trout town" this past Sat 5/1, what a great place!!!! If anyone is going to be up there on those dates please let me know, I would love to sit down and throw back a beer and say hello. I will be staying at the BeaverKill campsite, but will most likely bounce around to several of the "holes". Thanks again in advance.....

Hey gene,
I grew up a town over from you in Ridgewood. I am new to this board too, about 1 week

You are picking a great time to be up there as I am sure many will say.

End of May is drake time and if you catch it right, you will have a blast. Hopefully it won't be as crowded as it was in the picture posted in a thread earlier.

With this question you will ceratinly get a lot of feedback. There are many here who know that river quite well.

HI Gene, give me a call when you get here, i live in Roscoe. 607-498-9944. Be glad to show you around if i can. I take it your bringing the little rascles with you? I've got plenty of extra rods if you need to borrow a couple. It WILL be crowded up here then. It is already, even on weekdays it seems. But, there's always a place to fish where your not elbow to elbow, IF, you know where to go. Make sure you have plenty of Rusty Spinners. The March Browns will be falling, and maybe even some Brown Drake spinner falls will be happening. Depends on where you fish. Over on the East Branch you can expect Brown Drakes for sure. Hopefully you can get up here for the "Gathering." A one week long "comming together" of a whole bunch of fly fishing friends from 4 different web-sites. Now that your a member of this web-site, your officially invited. It starts May 31st and goes thru June 6th. We will be having a Neversink River Day on Thur. June 3rd, fly tying each night, a fly tying contest, a casting contest, special guest tyers, and a One Fly Pattern Fishing Contest on Fri. June 4th, and a big fairwell diner on Sat. June 5th, with door prizes and prizes for the contest winners. If your thinking of comming, you need to get a reservation NOW! Make sure you DO THAT! Make sure you have emergers of the Green Drake, Green Drake Duns, and the spinner (Coffin Flies). Also make sure you have plenty of caddis emergers in various sizes. mark.........

You picked a good time to come to the catskills so here is a expanded list of flies you are likely to see during your stay;dark blue sedge(med gray wing, dark gray body, size 12-14)sulfers(emerger,dun,spinner,size-18)grey fox(size-14)the march browns, green and brown drakes as already stated. Also don't over look the mornings with the start of the cornuta olives{med.olive body,dk.dun wing,size-14)and sulfers,(vitrea, pale yellow body,lt.dun wing size-14,16)observation is the key to success at this time as the fish will often show a preforance for 1 stage of 1 insect while other fish near by may be feeding on something else.ENJOY flymank out

Very good advice John. I forgot to mention Sulphers. There WILL be some for sure. And of course there's always some kind of a BWO. Hope you didn't blow the guy away what with all the Latin, but sometimes that type of rap will determin if a guy is serious. You never know, you may have intrigued him, or stired some extra interest. Give me a call. mark.........

Thanks for the advice guys!! And yes Mark I don't understand the latin names, but for the most part I get the jist of sizes and colors and emergers and spinners. Most of the time I put my trust in the fly shop owners/employees to steer me in the right direction, I am slowly starting to learn some of the flys, certainly not latin though....lol....used to know most of the latin terms of the major groups of trees back in my arborist days....but not anymore....
Thanks again I really do appreciate everyone taking the time to share their knowledge....

No problem Gene,............so, you makin' the "Gathering?" Let us know. Have a great time on the 25th,'6th,'7th. Give me a call while your in town. mark.......
