Bfb 11-2

leadhead

sleeps with the fishes
Got to the bfb at about 8:30. Started out below the lot off 560 about 1/4 mile below big pool(Werners?).
Water was 42. Worked down stream and tried just about everything. Nothing.
Decided to give the pool a shot on my way out if it wasn't too crowded. Only two guys. One had a spin rod, throwing metal:mad: When I stepped out of the woods the guy w/ the spin rod quickly reeled in and tried to hide the rod behind his back. His buddy made a little small talk and they quickly exited the area. Glad to see neither had anything on stringers. One of the rare times I wished I had a cell phone.

Saw no bugs, no rises, caught no fish, and didn't really care. Just a nice day to fish.

On a side note: I've been comming up w/ alot of caddis casings when nymphing. Do any of you ever fish casing patterns? Have any luck?

Every year I see some yahoos in the the fly stretch with spinning rods.

Definately on the caddis casing patterns. They work well all winter on the BFB...well if the river doesn't ice over. There are many patterns for them. Do you tie? It's one of the most simple flys to tie. A great starter fly. I like the Peeking Caddis the most.

We should hook up sometime.

Cdog,

Thanks for the patterns. I do tie and will give those a shot. My schedual doesn't let me plan ahead but I try to get there on Sun mornings. I drive a beat-up white Ford Ranger, and am the guy w/ too much stuff around my neck and vest.
I know the C.O. is out there watching, 'cause he snuck on me two weeks ago(my stamp looked funky). I kind of hope they keep trying because if they are stupid enough to fish one of the most popular spots on the river on a Sunday morning they will get caught.

AK, Oops am I letting the cat out of the bag? I didn't get the memo.

LH, Add about 8 wraps of lead to the hook. You want to fish them down near the bottom. I tie mine without the gold ribbing and only use dubbing in the colors shown to make them. Real simple yet very effective in the winter.

I was out at BFB on 11/2 as well. Makes me feel better that someone else was skunked, sorry about the shared negativity. I got there early in the morning, just before sunup, I could not sleep.

Did not even see a fish until about 1, and they were only interested in sitting on the bottom.

The only fish I moved was just above the 506 bridge, and it hammered my strike indicator, and never saw him again. I saw a couple of fish sip something off the top, but could never figure it out.

I noticed all of the caddis cases coming up on my hook, but could never get a good imitation, even trimmed down a Hares Ear Nymph to look like a brown cylinder (closest thing I could do with the tools at hand), and nothing.

There were fish in the water, they were just unmotivated.

All in all a nice day on the water, weather was crisp, water was cold, and for the most part spent alone, I too only saw a couple of people out. I walked a lot of river, and went a ways up past the 206 bridge, had a nice hike, got a hole in my waders from a thorn the size of an eagle claw, and caught nothing. A great way to spend a Sunday, now if I just paint next weekend, maybe my wife will let me out the weekend after that.

I fished the stretch from the bridge on 560 to the long pool about 1/4 mile up the dirt road. I drove for a while before i picked that stretch and didn't get out of the car because of all the youngins with guns and bows in the woods. So choosing life and not certain death dick cheeny style i fished that part with not even a bite... but to echo previous post it was great day to be out...water was runnin nice and cold but no feeshys

Can you say "The Glide"...sure you can...tttthhhhhheeee gggggllliiiiddddee.

The trout in The Glide are some of the smartest fish in the river. Constantly pressured by old guys. But, I out smart them every time by just walking by. No fish is going to laugh at me.

hey cdog
i knwo the invite wasnt out for me, but im 20 years old and live in blairstown and have been fishing the flatbrook since i fisrt started flyfishing. theres still so many things i would love to learn about the river since its so close to me and if you would be willing to assist i would appreciate it, you seem to know the river like the back of your hand and why not learn from the best

Is this guy a suckup or what!

Like the back of my hand yes, but I'm no where near old enough to be the best.

I'm begining to realize that I have to take up smoking a pipe to be a better fly fisherman. Something I'm reluctant to do. When an "old guy" walks up behind me puffin' his pipe, I just get out of the water and watch and learn.

You've got yourself a trip. When do you want to go? I rarely fish weekends in NJ.

Cdog, I might be the guy walking up behind you, only drinking a Green Mountain coffee.

I've NEVER had a good day on the BFB. Don't know what that's all about? Don't get me wrong, I love walking around that river, just gorgeous, and I've caught fish, but never in the numbers that I do on other rivers like the SBR.

I can nymph the SBR and land 12 fish in an afternoon. But the BFB is challenging don't think I've ever caught more than 2 or 3 in an afternoon. What do you think that's about?? Low water, spooky fish, difficult approaches, limited cover, all of the above??

Anyone else have similar experiences?

Actually none, I was somewhat suprised. Got the feeling I was being watched a few times, but nothing showed, or at least let me see it

Ditto, I have the same results on the BFB.I think the reasons are all what you listed above.

Mark,

I've never fished the SBR, so I can't compare it with the BFB, but I do know that there are alot of holdovers in the BFB and they get wise pretty fast. In some cases, I've found wild trout in other streams to be easier to catch. The BFB gets fished pretty hard by some very good fly fishermen. Many trout are caught and released. I think the fish learn what presentations to fear and become spooked by simple mistakes. I've spooked fish in the fly stretch just by false casting over them. We get spoiled by fishing for easy to catch fresh stockies. IMO one of the worst things fishermen do is to visually hunt for trout (sight fish). Personally, I prefer to fish the stream, not the fish. I look for areas that I think a fish would hold, then fish it expecting a trout to be there. Whether upstream or downstream from the spot, I try not to alert the trout to my presence. If I don't catch anything I move on. Over time you learn where fish hold and can return to those spots and catch them trip after trip.

Take Werner's Pool for example...The only way to approach it is walking up from downstream. If you walk in over the high banks you alert the trout to your presence before you even get to the water. All it takes is one trout spooking and running around in the pool to spook all the rest. I've been there having a great day many times only to have a yahoo walk down the hill above me and look into the pool and shut down the fish. So, I just pack up and move on.

The BFB has many little pockets and runs throughout the river that hold a trout or two. Usually under fast water so the fish aren't as spooky and feed more agressively. If you want your numbers to go up, I would recommend that you nymph every knee deep pocket your come across. If you just stick with the larger pools and runs that everyone else fishes, then you're going to have to work hard for the fish.

I wouldn't feel bad at all about a 3 fish day. It takes time to learn a river. Keep at it and keep learning and your numbers will get even better.

I'm no expert but I agree w/ Cdog(not sucking up!). I don't cast well enough to sightfish, so I try to fish everything. It takes me forever to cover a stream but I can say that I have had pretty good days on the BFB this year because I have gotten away from the parking lots and slowed down. Just go around the bend from some of the more popular pools and runs and hit that water that looks way too fast and you may get lucky. The faster water also hides my poor tying skills. Hike alittle further and you will have some great water all to yourself. Then hit those pools and runs on your way out.

I don't know how many times I have seen people come to a stream, fished 50ft up, then down stream and then say that there are no fish in the stream or they aren't bitting and leave.

P.S. I think AK has an unhealthy fixation with bears.

I agree with Cdog and rarely fish the BFB big pools like Werner's but look for runs and glides. Once the stocked trout have have adjusted to the water after the stocking season and been caught a couple of times, I suggest using the same stealth approaching the water and casting as you would on a WTS. And for the wild brookies and browns that inhabit portions of the BFB, use twice the stealth because they have been trampled on and seen every fly imaginable since April.

I also fish the upper SBR after the stocking season and catch somewhat higher numbers of trout, in part due to fewer anglers and the fact that I am more likely to run into a hungry batch of brookies that have not been spooked into oblivion. Hit the BFB on a weekday with WTS techniques and your numbers should increase.

And AK - Don't forget the mountain lions, rattlesnakes, copperheads, tigers, escaped convicts, Al Queda cells, pumas, Kodiaks, drug cartels, vampires, and goblins that the Flat Brook Valley is infested with! (actually, do be aware of the copperheads and timber rattlers)

Come on Ak, don't you read the papers? The bears aren't the problem, its the loss of habitat. So one day while you're fishing your favorite run on the BFB, don't be surprised if on Mcmansion falls on your head. In the meantime, you can modify one of those big yellow bearproof cans for a vest. Oh, and guns, bring lots of guns, can't ever have too much firepower:guns:.

AK just has a devilish plan underway. Scare the poop out of everyone by reminding them of the "MAN EATING BEARS" so they will be too scared to fish leaving the river empty for him.

Don't let him scare you. Besides the bears need to eat too.

Pat,

You left out Sasquatch and the locals.

I was fishing just up from Flatbrookville a few years back when I turned and saw this hick looking guy leaning against a tree watching me fish. I was prepared to fight cause I wasn't going to be porked. He asked hows the fishing, I said good, then he continued to talk for the next 15 minutes . No car, no fishing rod, no gun, he just walked in to where I was. Said he lived about a half a mile down the road. Then he left. I quickly walked back to my car and left as well.

I've also heard that there are canibles in the area.

Ready to fight. I hear that. Good thing nobody was at your car emptying it while he held you off. I worry more about that than getting porked. There are a few barefoot, chicklet tooth sharein people in them woods.
